Hi Jim,
I have been thinking about the idea of fitting guns to our CJ..........Can
you let me know what you have fitted and a bit of info on them.

We got Craig Payne's Lead flight check out of the way today. He now are
one!
Doing the honors as check pilot was Bob Mahanor of the T-34 Association.
(They're not doing much flying lately) :)
I flew the #2 slot, Bill Mills #3, and Erie Martinez at #4. We rendezvous
at OCF, sortie over to Leeward, sortie back to OCF where Payne bought us
lunch. We than headed home to FD44. Did some loops with Bill on my wing.
We had a lot of laughs at Mahanor's temporary grounding (he has a T-34 but
I
think I mentioned that). This went on until he pointed out that Craig had
not passed his check ride at that point. AT THAT POINT, we shut up. We
tested my machine gun on the OCF ramp. Works great!
Typical Florida winter day, CAVU and 72. Great day with great friends.

Lance,
I got my gun from none other than Doug Sapp. The total weight was about
37lbs! It's not lit. I believe these units he had were once made for a movie
and were never used (Scuttle Butt). Anyway its a straight forward system. An
oxygen bottle, two propane bottles, solenoid valves, a 24v coil, timer
control and "gun barrel". I mounted the bottles and control system on top of
my
smoke tank, which resides were the ADF use to sit. I ran hoses out to the left
wing (I cut a 1 1/2" hole) in the floor of the rear cockpit to get there.
The only hole I needed to cut. I mounted the gun at the left wing attach
point on the inter side of the first rib of the outer panel. This is right next
to the landing light which made an excellent access for mounting. I
insulated the barrel butt (it can get quite hot with no air blowing over it).
One
thing I added was 'blow back valves" right at the barrel ( there some already
on control system part over the smoke tank but I wanted more since the barrel
is just one rib from the fuel tank. Once thought out, it took just about two
days to put in. Figuring took a lot longer. I have a c/b and guarded switch
in the cockpit for arming and a button on the stick for firing.
There are several guys on the inter net who will build these things for you.
I conferred with one guy who felt he could easily build a gun pod
arrangement that mounted under the wing. I would have had to build the pod, he'd
make
the gun and system to fit. Cost would have been the same.
Drag, a lot higher.
I hope that's some help. The sound and muzzle flash are great! BTW the
Collings Foundation just restored a "Quad 50" on a half track and put gas to the
guns. UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!!!!!!

Craig. Congratulations. (although I remember you flying lead a long time ago....I
suppose that now that you've got this "air race" thing going at airshows
you needed the lead designation so you could finish "first" and be legal :-)

Yes indeed, Florida in the winter is tough! My thanks to
Check pilot Bob Mahanor who managed to suffer through our
insults and still do the check-ride (lunch helped). "Pappy"
Goolsby, Bill Mills, and "Ernie the M" of Yak-list fame
rounded out the stick guys, others joined in for the fun
later.
Bob has *promised* to stomp me in a race with his big engine
T-34 if the feds ever let him fly it again. Any odds?
BTW, we are talking about a mini-clinic at Leeward before
SNF for newbies in the area. All ashore that's going
ashore...

these still exist anywhere?

Hi Yakkers!
The only Aerogloss (Aero Gloss, actually) that I'm familiar with is a
good quality model airplane dope.
Using the reference to Sporty's Pilot Shop, I see they sell "Aero Glaze"
in one gallon containers that sounds a lot like the product you have been
using. Is this the "stuff"?
Best regards,
Roger

Sporty's sells it by the Gallon. seems spendy but you can do a Yak for a
couple
of years with a Gallon. There's no WAX in it. Cleaning and polishing
compound
only. Nothing to strip off the next time you use it. But it does look like
you've waxed your A/C when done.

RPA Regional Coordinators,
Send me your snail mail addresses and I'll send you some
RedStar Pilots brochures left over from ICAS. These are good
as single page mailers or handouts to airshow organizers in
your area. My emphasis is on the our major selling points:
We are Cheap, Good, and have Unique aircraft that only
consume half the amount of Mother Natures resources that
T-6's do...and we can assemble in goodly numbers. Kind of a
Red Horde on Wings.
The end game here is to snare about 3 or 4 regular airshow
venues in each region. The RC's run the game, using any
contacts we can cultivate both inside and outside the org.

A few years back, someone published a "primer" on preparing a new or
overhauled Chinese/Russian radial for installation and first start. I seem to
remember it covered topics like removing the various preserving fluids, cleaning
the
mags, areas to pre-lube etc.
Does anyone still have this piece in their archive? We have a new 285 that's
been sitting in the hangar for 5 years.
Thanks, Dave

It IS Aero Gloss. (Glaze is a window polish I believe). You can find it at www.airsuppliers.com I got some a month ago at .....duh....not Sporty's....sorry ...they did use to sell it....it was Aircraft Spruce....in their store in SOCAL.
You can use in on plexiglass too....just be sure your cotton cloth is clean for
both application and buffing.
If you put it on too thick, you will need to follow up in all the crevices with
a tooth brush :-)

No need now, just thinking towards the future. It was a good piece.
I expect we will be trucking it down to you one of these days. We bought it
from Ken O. 5-6 years ago before he moved north. He said it was a new, not
overhauled engine. I'm afraid since we have not even rotated it, it may be
frozen or some seals shot.
Thanks, Dave

Dave;
I see you have a reply from Jim Selby so you are in good hands. In addition
to de-preservation there are two items you need to check (though I'm sure
Jim will also tell you).
1. There may be an oiled paper between the mag points.
2. There may be a small condom on the air pressure sense tube in the
carburettor throat. This one I had to find the hard way after replacing a
perfectly good carb. It won't work with the tube covered.

If the engine has been stored on the mount with the prop shaft up ( which is
the norm ), the preservative oil can accumilate in the intake tubes. If not
religously flushed out, it can let go in gobs while attempting to
start.INSTANT HYDRAULIC LOCK!
Can, and has happened on any cylinder, not just the lower ones.
I had it happen on cyl. #1 after agressive flushing,
fortunately caught it pulling through by hand!
