Walt; I replaced a Gill 24 volt battery (expensive) with two of the Odessey batteries.
Check the archives of the list for the subject of center tapping to
get 12 volts. Brian Lloyd came up with much good advice. I also installed a
Battery Tender that is wired to a 120 volt male plug at the APU door port on the
left side of the aircraft. I keep a 120 volt extension cord plugged in all
the time that the aircraft is in the hangar. The physical size of the 2 odessey
(biggest available) is very close to the size of the Gill battery. There
were a couple of pictures posted that gave me guidance. rb

Has anyone used a pair of Odessey 12V batteries ( in series ) aboard a
YAK or a CJ ?
I see most of the Vans RV guys using this sealed battery . Advantages
are sealed construction , work well in high vibration areas , can be
mounted in any orientation , more power ( CCA's ) ( Amp hours ) , 2 +
year storage life , won't freeze ( good to - 40 degrees F ) , made in
the US , 2 year replacement warrantee.
The only downside I see on these is that a pair will weigh about 4
pounds more than the currently installed Concord RG series battery.(

Survival gear? Flight suits?
This is a 2 seat, single engine trainer. Like a Cessna 150. I have never thought
about this stuff flying the same type of airplanes. Parachutes are required
by the fed if you are upside down with a passenger, but???
The yak doesn't have enough gas to get to enemy territory, (East of the Mason/Dixon
line) So being found shouldn't be a problem.
I don't argue the point that having it on board is a good thing, but flight training
students in a Cessna doing touch & goes at the Orange County airport, (John
Wayne) is infinently more dangerouse than flying formation with a bunch of
guys that have all been trained in a great program.(Fast).
My day;
The sun is shinning on a beautiful Sunday morning. The wind is calm, the temp around
65, fuel cost about a buck a gallon, (humor me) And we are off for some
of those $100 pancakes. The high today is forcast to be 75.
I am in shorts, as is my wing man, Canopies are open, it is great to be alive!

I am in nomex underwear, socks, gloves and flight suit. My helmut is strapped on,
canopies are closed because we may hit a bird or bee. My canopy knife/hammer
is stowed. (Do you think that canopy could survive a crash?) The police line
tape is in the survival kit because terrorists could approach the aircraft while
we eat even though I have posted a guard, the tape will enclose the area.
I'm hot because the air conditioning is not operable, but it is in the log book
and signed off so we are legal to fly. It is a total of 15 minutes to the breakfast.
It is a beautiful Sunday morning, my neighbors just took off in their
C-150. In shorts with no survival gear. They will never make it, silly amatures.
Just go fly and have fun. We are not under attack its not a military airplane.
It is their version of the Cessna.
When they ground us because of a spar failure, then we can worry about the rescue.
Blue Sky's.

Hey all you 285hp CJ dirvers out there, in a few days there will be (should

you have inquired about. If interested in restoring your prop to it's
original factory look, please contact me off list. The logo is an exact

Hi
I extracted this from the Russian manuals when I wrote
our manual for use by Yak 52 drivers here in New Zealand.
In the clean configuration, the gliding range is 7:1 at the best
lift/drag speed of 160 km/hr. (Conservatively, this results in
a range of 1 nm per 1000ft AGL.
To obtain the maximum range, use 150 km/hr with a tailwind,
160 km/hr in still air, and 170 km/hr in a
headwind.
For each 10 knots of headwind, range decreases by
aproximately 10%.
The best performance when turning is achieved at 170 km/hr
at 45 angle of bank. A 180 turn in this configuration will take
12-15 seconds and results in an altitude loss of
approximately 370 ft.

The Odessey batteries are really great... after going through TWO of the
Concorde 390E batteries in my L-39 at $1,300 (cough) EACH (in the space of
about one year, and well within the warranty that Concorde never did
honor), I switched to a pair of $99 Odessey batteries and they've worked
like a charm under all manner of ACM shenanigans and up to FL330.

The ring of soft pads/hard foam that goes around the M14P helps support

It might work until you have to pull a cylinder. Suggest Termikus or Anabaras for

Mark,
Who makes the vest and is it a fly fishing vest. The AF/Army has a multipocket
survival vest the could be found at base salvage sometimes. The squadron changed
out the OD for Desert Tan. It is very similar to what you are talking about.
Have had to fly with it a few times in the Viper, kinda bulky and can be uncomfortable.
Your idea is good. Had approached the survival kit for XC 's by putting it all
in my helmet bag and hanging the bag on the emergency gear extension handle with
hopes that I could get it free quick enough if I had to step over the side.
Can you email me a picture of your offline?

The new site is finally finished, and registration is open...go to
allredstar.com and check it out!
Early registration gets you a 10% discount!!! The first 20 people to
register get an ARS polo shirt of their choice.
There are lots of new features and new flying activities at the event
this year, and more importantly a larger staff both in ground and air
ops to make sure that you there is more flying, better food, and more
fun than ever before.
Some highlights not mentioned on the site yet:
-Possibility of both an F-5 Tiger II out of Yuma and an F/A-18
Aggressor out of Miramar will be there.
-Red Star Performer's showcase on Friday night including Eddie
Andrieni in his Yak-9, Greg Medford in his CJ-6A, and Sal Rubino flying
not one, but perhaps BOTH of his MiG-21's.
-Banquet speaker, TBD, but Willy Driscol (Navy Ace Randy Cunningham's
WSO) and Bernie Fisher (Congressional Medal of Honor from Vietnam)
are on the short list.
-Air Race demo, road recce, and introduction to low-level flying
activities.
-COLD Keg of beer on the ramp every night at 1700!
-Aerobatics box over the field at the end of each day.
-Drew dressed in drag! Mmmmm, bad mental image....maybe not.
-Online secure registration using major CC's!
-Downloadable daily schedule and *poster* that you can print to hang
at your local airport, or in your hangar, behind the settee in the
dining room, etc.
-The real dirt on our staff...on the "staff" page, of course!
-Much, much more...but that's what the web site is for!
