Seeking an opinion........
If my information is correct, the FAA now allows people to make money
for "training purposes only" in experimental aircraft. I guess the idea
is that it's safer to get specific training in your model of aircraft
than not. This allows someone to, say, charge for transition training in
a YAK-52 or an RV-8.
The question is how far does that training go? Could you train, say, all
the way up to and including air-combat training?
The idea here is if someone wants to start an air-combat school and
"legally" charge their clients they can now do it. Would this "training
concept" be legal under existing law?

Bob,
I've been using 25W-60 for several years and swear by it. I do not have
higher oil consumption and the coating quality seems to be equal to or
better than the 100W Aeroshell, although I have no scientific proof of that.
In fact my oil consumption has actually decreased slightly. FWIW

On the ground if you pull the prop to coarse pitch with the throttle closed
just before cutting the switches,
the prop will go to coarse pitch and stay there.
This is common practice with the Hamilton standard CW props which operate
exactly the same as the Chinese and
Russian CW props, purpose for this is to retract the exposed piston while
parked. (not necessary with our props).
All airplanes I have flown with the Ham standard props (T6,T50,DH Beaver, DH
Otter), flight manuals
under emergency situations ie. engine out, specify prop control to coarse
pitch for minimum drag.
It was specially critical on the T50 being a twin, one of the few twins with
non feathering props.
It does not require a lot of effort to bring the prop handle to coarse
position.

On my M14 I am using the UMA tach generator with analog indicators supplied
by Gesoco Ind., mounts directly on the air start dist. valve similar to the
H6A installation.
Works fine and UMA has a good warrantee.

Funny you mention that...
I am in the process of finishing a manuscript for that very purpose. Though
the name (at this time) is somewhat boring ...
"A Guide To Civilian Formation Aerobatics", it will be a very comprehensive
package to include flight lesson sorties and an example of a aerial display
dissected in detail. It should be out in a month or less.
It will be sold for $19.95 through a website..(To be determined) or by
direct request from me.

I could see this as beneficial by getting the oil out
of the prop dome and into the engine for preheating
scenarios. Is there reason for concern on the next
start (oil rushing into the dome)?

My CJ (M14P) has the EI tach. It works okay but can be a bit "jumpy" at
times. This may part of what Dee was alluding to with the comment that the
P-lead pickup being less desirable. Mine is also in RPM instead of % but
seems fine overall.

To put in my two cents for what its worth, in my Yak-55 I also use the
25W-60 and oil consumption has been about 1 qt./hour @ 82% power. I don't
have a lot of experience on this plane yet to know whether that number will
remain constant, however the previous owner used the same oil and claimed
the same consumption. Regarding oil heaters, I have 3 EZ-Heat pads
installed, one on the oil tank, one on the engine sump and one on the oil
cooler, all tied to a common switch. Preheat in the winter has been via
100,000 Btu kerosene torpedo heater with a 90 degree elbow aimed up and
placed under the engine which has its lower cowl removed. Havent had a
problem with gelling oil though I did have the breather tube pull apart at
one of the joints due to cold weather flying (another subject).

FWIW, the UMA tach generators which are used on the 52TW/W have exhibited
oil leaks and failures much more frequently that any Russian tach generator.
As an example, I have replace the UMA tach generator on a 52TW 3 times for
precisely the problems I mentioned.

If they are in perfect brand new condition with no body filler, etc., I'd
say around $1800. Be aware that the lower cowl is worth more than the
upper.

P.S. My price estimate is based on what I paid to have them shipped from
Russia... which is an experience I would recommend that no one here tries to
duplicate. It was a real learning experience.

Sun 'n Funners,
In response to inquiries I have been receiving, I'd like to
expand a bit on the subject of newbie training.
Major events are a poor place to train, increased air
traffic, conflicting schedules, etc. That being said, *some*
accomodation could be made for folks who will commit to
arriving early on Saturday the 9th. We *could* train on Sat.
afternoon, Sunday, and a possible hop Monday morn. Lots of
other arrivals on Monday...mass formation practice will be
the focus then. Forget about training at the end of the
week, everyone has weather concerns and other places to be.
We would require some IP's though, and most of those that
are coming will not arrive in time. Therefore, only a small
number of trainees can be handled unless more IP's commit to
early arrival. Check and Rec rides by appointment only.

If memory serves, I paid about $1100 for my cowl new. Could have been a
little less but then this was back in 2001. Don't know what a YAK-50
cowl would go for.
