Thanks Steve for the tip. It's unfortunate that one has to "re-engineer" a
product that should have been designed and manufactured differently to begin
with. Or better still, probably should have never been installed on an M14
or in a Yak 52 to begin with.

Just got back from the TICO airshow at TIX. It seem like a low crowd turn
out and not to many warbirds showed. This has been going on for a number of
years. Quite frankly I think some new leadership at the VAC should help.
Just my opinion.
There were 3 CJs, 1 Yak tw, 1 Yak 7, 10 T-28s, C-45, B-25, 2 P3s, 7 T-6s,
DR-1, Wildcat, 2 P-51s, 2 L-39, L-29, 3 FW-149, L-19, O2, L2, A-10, F-16,
and 4 FS-260 (Bob Gant's bunch. They had a nice formation routine)
Except for the last day the winds were fairly high at show time and the
pattern was rougher than cob. Yesterday, for the first time ever, my gear
refused to retract. Airboss had me land out of the normal sequence but I didn't
get in anybody's way. Flying home that evening the gear worked fine and did so
on the jacks in the hangar. Plus has worked though 8 takeoffs and landings
since. Go figure. Maybe she's trying to tell me something.
On this last day I flew #2 off "Folky Wolf" lead (a former F-16 driver from
Homestead AFB in his FW-149) with Ray Gage in his TW as #3. When our few
turns of glory finished the FW-149 jock turn south, Ray landed to pick up a
friend, and I turned north to EVB to check out the new paint job on the Collings
B-24J. IT IS AWSUMELY UGLY! I can not imagine an armada of B-24s painted
like this. The "Dragon and his tail" is now "Witchcraft"; a B-24 that had the
most missions in WW2.
Guys. When you are doing these shows (big or small) KNOW YOUR CROWD LINE!
DO NOT VILOLATE IT! A O2 pilot cross the line THREE TIMES! Each time being
warned by airboss! There is no excuse for poor basic airmanship, maintaining
a specific ground track. Winds blowing toward the crowd can push you over
the line, BUT DON'T LET IT. Flying the circuit in a show requires a basic
skill of controlling you ground track. If you can't do that stay out of the
air.
Lead a 4 ship early in this morning, getting Jim Kelly in his FW-149
current. The air was smooth as silk and CAVU. We had tried it yesterday, but
radio
problems plus some mistakes of one of the other guys, required we do it over.
It was a nice little show, but not a bit like it's former days, when there
was hardly any room for all the warbirds that showed up. They had a great
show back than; being able to put on acts to represent just about every major
theater of WW2. Its sad really.

Fellow Yak Drivers:
Just a friendly reminder that the EAA chapter at St. Elmo Airport, Mobile,
AL (2R5) is having it's annual fly-in this next Saturday, March 19th. Many
interesting airplanes show up, including T-6's, Yaks, Stearmans, Wacos, and
various ultralights. Paul Mather (M-Squared Aviation, Inc.) usually has an
inflatable trampoline for the kids/grandkids set-up. Hotdogs and hamburgers
are served starting around 11:00. A $5.00 donation to the Chapter is
appreciated. Every year we have had a good attendance, both from local
folks and pilots. Everyone looks forward to seeing the Yaks in their bright
colors, so please plan to bring your plane if you can. The runway is
oriented E-W, more or less (6-24), and is approximately 4,000 feet paved.
I'm looking forward to seeing y'all again this next weekend. Call me if you
need more details.
Warmest regards,
Greg Arnold
Yak Driver 624PT

p.s. keep an eye out for ultralights. They usually have one or two in the pattern.

Pappy,
A change is coming. Not sure it is in the leadership of VAC though. It is more
likely due to the increasing expense of operation for the "big iron". Watch, wait,
and see, the Yak is going to be the star performer at the airshows because
no one else can afford to keep feeding the big iron as the price of gas increases.
The Yak is slowly becoming the star of the show. That and the more affordable
homebuilts. The guy who was your average millionaire can't keep pouring
money down the maintance and fuel hole. Only a few of the p-47's and a slightly
few more P-51's are out there. The big gas and oil consumers (the Jug, Corsair,
ect.) are not showing up in big numbers. It all boils down to cost. It is
the same reason I did not consider buying a T-6 or for that matter, a YAK-11
or YAK- 9 after running the numbers on the YAK - 52. They are the affordable
warbird in the >500 hp range. I realize the T-6 is not > 500 hp, but it still
falls in the $120 to $260 K catagory. The L-29 and L39 are also in that catagory.
For me it was not the cost of aquisition, it was the cost of feeding and watering.
The cost of housing for one of these birds also goes up. Need a longer
runway than available at Wetumpka (08A) to accomadate a YAK-9 or L-39. Thank
God we won the Cold War!
Do not get me wrong. I am not gloating over the rise of the YAK. It is sad to see
that those WWII aircraft that I remember from my childhood have dewindled to
numbers like 1,3,6 or 43 left flying. It is a truely sad time for the "Big
Iron" for those of us that were around in the time that they were in their hayday!
I just hope they can be preserved for the next generation. More than likely
many of them are going to end up as static displays in museums or on a stick
as a gate guard. That is a sad thought. Not being able to hear the roar of the
Merlins or the Wright Whirl Winds again.
Have you checked out the Warbird list lately? I have been watching it for awhile
now. For the past 3 weeks as an example, there has not been a single comment
posted. That is a sign of a dying breed.

Pappy,
Is that the same Jim Kelly who used to own a CJ6?
Dennis
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yep. The very same. He sat in my CJ and told me how much he missed it.
