If that is the case, then why does Lycoming monitor the hottest cylinder for it's
EGT. Granted EGT and CHT are slightly different but the principle is the same.
It would seem that we would want to use a split gauge monitor for the highest
temp cylinder and the coldest cylinder. That would give a better trend of
what is going on under the cowling. Heck, we could go NASCAR and put litt'l bitty
TV cameras on those suckers a watch them heat up if the damned oil mist off
my blankety blank push rod boots did not cloud them up! Fic one set an another
starts to leak.
Seriously, measuring the hottest and coolest would give alot of info.
The trick to preventing over heating the engine by forgetting about the louvers
for about 3 min. on take off is open them all the up and monitor the temp inflight
adjusting accordingly ( as we all should anyway as part of our instrument
scan). Dennis Savarese taught me that trick.

OK,
I'll float a theory and see who bites. We monitor CHT because of concerns
with excessive wear/stress at low temperatures and weakened aluminum at high
temperatures. To get high CHT, we need restricted airflows such as louvres
closed with engine at high power. In this case, testing would establish the
temperature spread from #4 cylinder to #9 and permit a limit to be set on
any monitored cylinder approximately equivalent to the limit condition on
the #9 cylinder. With excessive cooling, such as shock cooling in a dive or
running up to full power on a cold engine, the range of CHTs would be more
affected by the condition (cold engine or excessive cooling flow) but in
each case the #4 is the coldest and most critical. Consequently, monitor #4
because it is critical when the engine is cold, and you know that the more
stable hot engine/low airflow conditions can be accounted for by setting a
limit on the #4 cylinder which will keep the #9 cylinder inside it's
structural limits. All of this assumes a normal functioning engine, but the
Russians didn't have enough cockpit space or microprocessors to monitor all
cylinders, so they had to choose the critical case.
comments,
Dave.

Jerry
Be careful, you might get blasted very - very hard for any political
talk on the LIST. I don't mind, once in awhile, but others will slam you
hard for doing it.
Good Luck

Yakkers
Some have write to ask for a more in-depth explanation of the shimmy
damper problem on the YAK-52. Here is a link to a picture with wording
that should help illustrate the problem a little better.

We had a great day flying today with Shane Golden in Aiken, SC.
A few good formation flights, some tactical formation, and a little neutral
ACM.
A young child, who shall remain nameless, managed to wax my tail from the
backseat of Shane's 52. I'm still not sure how it did it and he's not
saying.....(big surprise there!)
How lucky we are to have these planes, the skys to fly them in, and the
friends we get to meet.

Outstanding!!! all I can say is I am SOOOOOOO jealous of you guys!!! :)
It sounds like you guys had some fun.
I got all ready to go only to find that my #1 cylinder decided not to
participate, I hope it's nothing major. Anyway, I should be back in the air real
soon. I hope we can all get together again before SNF.
Hope all is well,
Jim (Launch Pad)Plumlee
Oh, btw, give Alex a pat on the back.. He's a great stick. Makes me think
of my best friend Brian Walsh. We both started flying when we were 14 years
old. Brian is 27 now. He graduated from the Airforce Academy in 99 ...he flys
F-16's out of shaw... In fact he's about to take his last flight in april,
then it's off to Valdosta,Ga, to be a T-38 Instructor.

I just spent the day doing some formation training over at Leeward's near
OCF. Clear blue skies and light wind, temp in the high 60's. Got to see a
head on pass by a P-51 as we headed over to X35 for petrol and take a look at
the B-24, 17, and 25 of the Collings Foundation.
We are working with 3 newbies and they are coming along fine. Having great
fun too.
