Me too. May piss some members off along the way, but we seem to be doing it for

I'm in the middle of a commercial break on part 3 of the Blue Angles
Shows on the Military Channel, as are most of you :).
I was given a copy of Pilot Journal today with a special article on
CJ's today. I was "amused" by some of the "facts" and statistics on
the airplane, but otherwise a nice read.
I am really starting to miss the fact that I'm gonna miss S&F this
year with my airplane due to its cosmetic overhaul that I have
embarked on but I think its gonna be worth it. Watching the T-Bird
show gives me a new found appreciation for the military influenced
professionalism that the RPA brings to its events. Being a civilian
pilot who has been through RPA's events gives me a different viewpoint
and respect to what the "Pros" do in real life.
How bought we work on a vertical break like the Blues.
Just wanted to say "I'm proud to be a Red Star Pilot"!!!

Hey,
I too have seen the Blue Angels series and was really impressed with it. As much
as I hate to say it (being USAF and all), IN MY OPINION, the Blues put on a
much better show than the Thunderbirds. Having done a few shows on that side of
the fence, they are all pretty good guys too...plus they use a Herk!
I also wanted to add that I went and saw the Imax film Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag (http://www.fighterpilotfilm.com/<http://www.fighterpilotfilm.com/>) It basically follows a F-15 driver through his first trip to Nellis AFB for Red Flag. If you think you are going to see a documentary about the pilot and Red Flag, you will be disappointed. There is a lot of Hollywood in it which, IN MY OPINION, kills the film. Lots of computer generated stuff and big Hollywood explosions. Dog fighting at scrub brush level, flares being popped all over the place (some look like they were salvo'ed and there was very little maneuvering following their deployment). Imax's are usually pretty stunning and this does have some cool flying scenes but that is about it. Just way too much Hollywood.
I would be interested to hear from those that have attended Red Flag and get their
impression on the film.
Regards,
Tim
PS. I am trying to put together a DVD collection of the greatest aviation films
of all time. Any thoughts....

For the Dixie Wing CAF FAST clinic are they requiring participants to be CAF members?
Membership is required for the events in California.
Just curious.

Does anyone know what the correct recommended substance is to put in the
pneumatic accumulator (sphere) in a Yak 50-52? I have heard everything from
alcohol/glycerin to compressor oil.

In addition to using air tool oil try putting a little
ACF-50 anti corrosion formula in the system. It acts
as a water displacer and I see a lot less corrosion in
the filter screens and air bottles in airplanes that I
add it to.
BTW, I am moving my shop across the field here at LZU,
I anticipate the contractor being done with the new
hanger @May 1st. Hope this does not cause any of you
who need maintenance any inconvenience. Call me if you
need something and I will put you in the temp. hanger

Thanks for the information. Along those lines, could you think of any
reason why NOT to use the glycerin/denatured alcohol mix that the Russians
use, in addition to the compressor oil? By the way, where are you located

Batman,
They have not said for sure yet. They are looking at the fact that we will have
our on RPA check pilot and FAST lead/ rec pilots there with us. If we have to
guess we could do it on our on without them. I am already a member of the CAF
so it is not a big deal for me, but it could be for others.

For the Dixie Wing CAF FAST clinic are they requiring participants to be CAF members?
Membership is required for the events in California.
Just curious.

As you may or not know Glycerin is one of the prime chemicals used in
preserving flowers. I buy it in semi quantities each spring. We use only
USP grade (we even have some drums of Kosher glycerin if you feel so
inclined. We also use alcohol in one of our processes, but due to the
flammable nature of the stuff I think it best for you to get it locally and
not try to ship it. Glycerin on the other hand is not flammable is classed
as benign and has no problem moving via UPS or the mail. So, if I can be of
help contact me off list.
Consider: Glycerin is one of a group of humectants (meaning it draws
humidity/moisture). Alcohol will also absorb water. I'm not a Yak 52 guy
and I know zip about it's systems, but I do know these two chemicals very
well, and they both would most assuredly aid in removing moisture from the
system.
Always Yakin,

Tim,
I have been to Red Flag x2 and Green Flag once. From the teasers on that website,
it is to much "Hollywood". Some of the flying looked good but like all the
aviation War movies, Hollywood screws it up. I liked "Top Gun". But, that is
only for the aviation scenes. The rest of the story is BS. Another good war movie
is " Battle of Britian". Again the movie makers take to much "litarary privilage"
and fake it up. " 12 O'Clock" high is also good. Agian for the B-17 footage
in combat. "Memphis Bell" the War Department documentary not the Hollywoood
movie of recient is a good movie also. It comes closer to being on the point
than any. But they had the help of Hollywood therefore there a level of BS
included. Depressing huh?
I have never heard a 500, 1000, or 2000 lb'er explode from the cockpit. Nice flash
on the ground when your pulling off the range looking back over your shoulder
though. The 'Grunts" say its pretty loud. You do hear the vulcan 20 mm fire
( and feel it in your left but cheek). Kinda sounds and feels like a jack hammer
burst.
The Hollywood types can't get the radio calls correct either in the above movies.
That's my opinion for what it is worth.

Hey,
I too have seen the Blue Angels series and was really impressed with it. As much
as I hate to say it (being USAF and all), IN MY OPINION, the Blues put on a
much better show than the Thunderbirds.
