OHH, By-the-way, I'm getting a RUSSIAN Flight suit. Is that allowed?
How about CJ-6 guys wearing the Chinese flight suits (like Tom Elliot

Myself and old friend Bob Dorsey, carried out the last wishes of a fellow
aviator yesterday and spread his ashes above the Atlantic.
Bob Poulsen had been a captain Pan Am (the real Pan Am) when Dorsey and I
were young bucks there. Like me he dutifully kept a log book with each flight
recorded which also included the names of his crew. Yep, we found my name in
there on the same trip I had recorded in my log.
A little info for those who plan on dropping ashes from one's CJ-6 (should
be heeded by all really). Never just to dump the ashes over the side. You'll
half of them back in the airplane. The theoretical airflow around an
airplane are poppy cock. The air does not flow in neat streams, it is a total
cachous of vortices. The first time I ever drop ashes was from a J-3 along time
ago. Being the "pilot", I sat in the back seat and when ashes were dropped
from the front seat, I got a face full. Even my pockets were full of the guy
for weeks afterwards.
The next time was out of a Cessna 172. "Oh this will easy, simply open the
window on the pax side". Well it wasn't as "bad" as the first time, but I
spent a good amount of time vacuuming out the cabin.
A few years ago I was asked to spread the ashes of a local young man over
the Ocala National Forest. His dad climbed in the back seat. I thought I had
it figured out now. I told him that I would slow the airplane down (very
important) and he needed to hold the bag closed until he got out as far as he
could reach into the slip stream before letting the bag open. He did this and
it looked fine from where we could see. On the ground we found that the
whole side of my airplane was covered with a gray "mist". The really light ash
stuck to the film of oil on the side of the fuselage. It was VERY evident to
the kid's relatives who were there for the send off. Embarrassed beyond
belief, after they left, I washed off the plane and found that the heaver ash
(and
this stuff is very hard) had sand blasted the leading edge of the horizontal
stabilizer.
Let's face it. This is a ceremony of sorts. You'd like to have it done
with dignity and EVERY bit of the deceits should go where he wanted it. Not
sucked up in a vacuum cleaner or washed away on some airport ramp.
Come time to do Poulsen's ashes I vowed to do it right. I took a 5 pound
coffee can. I made a small parachute from bed sheet. It was 1 1/2 foot across
and had 8 risers. I attached the chute to a drilled hole in the center of
the bottom of the can. I sprayed the can black for obvious reasons. Next I
lined the can with duck tape- rolled on its self so that the sticky side was
out. This was to hold the ashes bag in can. The chute, can, risers and tape
are all biodegradable over time so the ocean will take care of that part.
Human ashes usually come in a plastic bag with metal tie rap to close the
mouth. This bag will JUST fit in a 5 pound coffee can. You place the bag in
the can with the mouth up. Leave the tie rap on BUT take along a pair of
tikes to cut it just before throwing them out. The guy who will throw the can
must know where and how to throw it. Have him aim behind the wing. And it is
mandatory that you slow down to slow flight speeds.
My little contraption worked very well. There were 20 or so friends and
relatives at St Augustine airport when I taxied in. I had a handheld receiver
tuned to a disquiet frequency. Bob Dorsey and I took off and headed east out
over a glassy smooth ocean with nothing but CAVU everywhere. At 4,000 feet
and 8 nm out, Bob clipped the wire holding the bag close, said a few approbate
words over the radio for the folks on the ground, and heaved Poulsen's ashes
over the side. The rolled up chute opened some distance from our plane and
the ashes spread out in a long stream that slowly dispersed. For Bob and I
is was quite moving watching the ashes disappear.
Bob Poulsen had been a B-24 flight instructor in WW2. I some how feel bless
that our paths crossed so many times and in the end his name will appear the
last time in my log book.

Just as a point of interest, the Russian flight suit was a disappointment to
me since it is merely a pair of blue pants and a light weight jacket! I got
it from Russia for $95.

Gents,
I have three Lambda LRS-58-28 Power supplies left that are for sale. These
are extremely high quality regulated power supplies that provide FIFTY AMPS
of continious duty power at 28 volts DC. The dimensions are roughly
14"x5"x6.5". The only downside is that they require 185-250 volts AC input
power. Yes, 220 household power is just fine. So is single phase 220 or
two out of three phases of 115 (208 volts). Any single or dual phase source
that adds up to over 185 volts will power these things.
The things are just the ticket for powering up your YAK, or L-29, or L-39,
or heck.. just about any other 28 volt warbird, using the birds external
power connector. If you ever have to do any extensive troubleshooting
you'll wish you had one of these things.
Contact me off-net if you are interested.

Ding! The light goes on. I have two 24V three-stage battery chargers that I
'surplussed' from my boat (with a 24V electrical system). One is a 40A and the
other is a 20A. They charge at a normal rate and then switch to a lower
'float' voltage that will maintain the battery at full charge without damaging
it. These units are made by Newmar and cost a bundle. (They now sell the 35A
charger for a whopping $1050!) Just the ticket to ensure your battery is fully
charged no matter how long it has been since you flew and also to power your
goodies when testing things on the ground.
Make me an offer.

Re last wishes.....Several years ago a good friend and fellow aviator bit
the dust early......he was a darn good pilot, so the details of his demise
surprised many of us. Knowing that his ashes must be dropped from an
airplane, his girlfriend asked me to do the honors. No Cessna-150 would do
for this friend. I took my Luscombe, met the party at the designated area,
and rolled the ashes up in a beach towel to avoid said problems with
leftovers.....I instructed the girlfriend when and how to release our
friend, and did so after a fly-by of the ground crew, who had his favorite
Pink Floyd tune blaring out of the boombox. We then flew over a favorite
island in a nearby lake that he and his girlfriend had had many picnic
lunches via his Volmer Sportsman. As the girlfriend released the beachtowel,
the ashes made a comet-like bullseye onto the center of the island....the
feeling of accomplishment was incredible as we made it back to the runway.
As you say, sometimes everything goes right. Marcus Bates, Jr.
