Curious about the Yak 53. I have a Yak 50 and understand the 53 was a
version of the 50 used in Afghanistan?

Two Yak-53s were produced, the intention being a long life single-seat trainer,
as opposed to the Yak-50 which was short life and for competitions. Weight saving
was 310lbs.
An aircraft was converted for trials for COIN work in Afghanistan, but never used.
The aim was to have a low infra-red piston engine aircraft.
Inevitably a number of Yak-52s have been converted subsequently and vendors claim
that they are original Yak-53s.
I hope this helps!

Sun 'n Fun '05 is nearing an end. So far, RPA aircraft RULE!
19 yaks/CJ's made it to the Leeward Ranch lunch today plus 1
IAR823. At Lakeland, our numbers exceeded that of each group
of T-whatevers. Final count still being taken. That being
said, the WB turnout seemed to be down. Perhaps $3 to $4
Avgas?? Real slim on fighters and big iron, with one notable
exception: "Glacier Girl" the P-38. What a joy to see (and
hear) one flying again.
One show left. Most WB's will be gone by showtime Sunday
afternoon. WB show was cancelled. It's also good to hear
sincere compliments from old timers on our RPA flying
skills. This from long-time T-whatever pilots. Of course
they know so little about the power of RedStar Iron
Discipline...one little screwup on frequency and you are
buying a round :)

T-Whatever's? Is this code for something? Our lead told us to watch out for those
"Chinese or Japanese or whatever those little things were" Their leader
sounds like he's wearing an oxygen mask when he talks on the radio and it is very
hard to tell if he's speaking Chinese or Japanese. But they do fly together
pretty well AND sound cool. Just hard to see....

Thanks to Craig for setting up our staging area in Zepherhills this year. Everything
has gone well.
He forgot there was also an L39 and an L29 with a "red star" on them at Leeward.
Jimmy Leeward pulled out his Mustang and we had some formation fun with the
39.
The weather has been great at SnF and the red star presence is large in the jet
area as well with 10 or so L29 and L39's

Gang,
OK, the tax man has cometh, and now Natasha awaiteth... That sexy
Russian brunette is waiting to focus your mind on more enjoyable
matters at this years All Red Star.
She has asked me (and who am I to say no to her?) to give "the fellas"
one last chance at early registration. Fees go up by approximately 10%
after this final chance to pre-register. Go to www.allredstar.com
before April 18th to be the benefactor of Natasha's, ummm, persuasion!
You can also check out the new promo video on our home page...
We are looking good as advanced registration is at an all time high, as
is the size of our volunteer staff. Hope you can stand and be counted,
too!
Cheers,
Barry

Richard,
Thanks for the info on the Yak 53. That is basically what I understood, but
I'm afraid I don't get the "long life" part. What was different from the
50? And where was the 310 lbs vs. the Yak 50 saved?

Richard
The Yak-53 I have has Hard Points under the wings and has reinforcing plates
on top of the wing over where the Hard points are, and is totally all Flush
rivited, also has some type of attach points under the Fuselage in the
center, It may have been for a Tank mount. It fly's real well and has a
Large forward baggage area.

Yes, but the Yak-53 had a Long Life Airframe and a Nose Wheel, it's a real
nice flying Aircraft and Climb's like crazy, and it's all Flush Rivited and
has a Large baggage area up where the front Cockpit was.
