    Subject: Re: Satellite Radio
--> Yak-List message posted by: Herb Coussons <drc@wscare.com> iPod is the way to go if you only want music. I do like the idea of satellite radio for weather though - good idea although if long cross country or non-CAVU weather are not in your plans then iPod is way better for music and cheaper in the long run. OTHER COOL GADGETS -- We just installed a camera system in the Yak - way cool. See the link for the unit. It is basically a hard drive with built in encoding software on it for video, audio, jpegs etc. You could use it as an MP3 music source instead of the iPod. We have 3 cameras mounted. One facing forward out the front over the head of the pilot. Another into the back seat to get the face of the GIB and another down the right wing to watch the horizon go around. They feed into a simple multiplexor mounted behind the pilot seat. You can set the view to any camera or multiplex all 3 in and watch all three at once. The "video" is saved on the hard drive and easily transfered to a PC or Mac. Yesterday I filmed about 40 min's of acro and the file is 500mb. 2-3 min transfer to the Mac by USB. I am going to try editing the files - I have not done that yet. But I look forward to filming the uninitiated in the back seat and filming some formation work this summer. Big fun factor - no extra workload. And it is easy to move in and out of the plane. Just add to the checklist "Throw video overboard before filing NASA form !!" --> Yak-List message posted by: "Jim Ivey" <jim@jimivey.com> My XM has a 10 second cache so as to not interrupt programming when traveling through tunnels or under bridges. The cache is not a delay per say but seamlessly continues as you regain sky contact. If you stay inverted more than 10 seconds in your CJ you're one up on me (and mine has full Yak-52 inverted system). Subject: Satellite Radio
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jim Ivey" <jim@jimivey.com> Based on queries received off list I present the following about my XM Roady: I just plug it into the remote auxiliary audio jack as supplied from Sigtronics or other ICS manufacturer (1/8" stereo patch cable from Radio Shack does the trick). Then I throw the antenna on the glareshield and plug in 14v (CJ requires a converter and mine already had a 14v Collins voltage converter onboard). There are also adapters available for Delphi products in particular from Aeromedix.com that cover voltages from 10v to 30v so you don't have to worry: http://www.aeromedix.com/?_siteid=aeromedix&_sessid=9c1ba28e53f657fe145f0be2 592840e5&action=sku&sku=skypc30v I prefer satellite to MP3 players because I hate having to keep up with organizing music on my computer. I have enough things to keep track of and an MP3 player doesn't make the cut in pre-flight preparations. I also have stacks of CD's, DVD's and video tapes from over the years and I don't like having to store and organize them. That same philosophy carries over to MP3 files on my computer. I also have found many songs and other programming I would have never known about without XM. And the final straw is that XM has the Weather Channel and city-specific channels. When I want music I just want to turn something on without worrying about what I've programmed or haven't programmed -- I'm not that kind of person. As to cost, the Roady is about $78. Here is a link on the Roady to some good folks (I have had excellent phone support from these guys.... Real nice): http://www.xmfanstore.com/showproduct.php?id=roady2 Jim Ivey

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jim Ivey" <jim@jimivey.com> Jay: Yes. My CJ had a full Yak-52 FWF installed before I bought it. Flop tubes and everything. With the airfoil and polyhedral of the CJ wing sustained inverted flight is tough as the forward stick required and inherent wing design stability will keep trying to upright you. The airplane actually has a few things that were done to it that would classify it as unique. For example, it has an 28v APU air compressor on board for generating air and recharging the system. It is a US-made World-War II era Cornelius pump and does a heck of a job. No hunting for somebody with an air bottle at remote airports. It is mounted aft of the radio rack area and has enough weight and arm to balance the aircraft without the addition of ballast as most do. It also has a 23-gallon auxiliary fuel tank behind the baggage area with a very precise fuel gauge indicator up front. Bird is placarded against acro with fuel in aux. It has a smoke system with a metal tank adjacent to the aft aux tank with sight gauge. The wobble pump was removed and replaced by an electric fuel pump so the area where the wobble pump handle was is now an avionics sub-panel. The M14P has a Jasco 28v alternator instead of the stock generator and the original tach was replaced with an EI electronic tach. The oil filtration system has a bypass warning light in the cockpit (one more safety item). Anyway, I know you just asked about the inverted system but I personally think it's overkill in a CJ. The CJ just flies too stable and nice to let you do anything that will give you a headache. My only regret is that due to circumstances beyond my control I must sell the bird soon. It's tough to accept this painful decision whenever I fly her. Jim Ivey > Jim- your CJ has the YAK inverted system? I'd be interested in > discussing that further with you.. > Jay

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jim Ivey" <jim@jimivey.com> Unfortunately the answer is "I'm sure". The nice fellow at the FSDO tried to tell me I should be okay because of the pre-moratorium date of my C of A (he was very, very nice and tried to get me going without having to change things). Then he saw the ops limits and knew we did in fact have to change things. My ops limits state the bird can only be flown in certain Northeastern states, Florida and to and from Texas for maintenance. There are lots more states out there including Arizona, where I just got a hangar in Payson. Basically my bird didn't get the original general and lenient ops limits at certification like most pre-moratorium birds. --> Yak-List message posted by: "egon" <egon@hinet.net.au> Hi all, I am having a small problem with my Yak 52 and I thought I would run it by you all. Occasionally when flying at high speed ( 180 plus kts.) there is a sudden and usually short miss. Power setting is 80% and 800 mm. It has also happened at 70%. The engine is otherwise very smooth. I was wondering whether the carb is set up a little on the lean side but that is only a guess. Has anyone seen or heard of this before?? Thanks in anticipation. Cheers.
