    Subject: Yak 52 Gear
--> Yak-List message posted by: Bitterlich GS11 Mark G <BitterlichMG@cherrypoint.usmc.mil> A fellow I know at my local airport just had an incident where the left gear slowly collapsed upon landing. He claims that he had good down and locked indications. I know exactly how the landing gear on a 50 works, but am not 100% on a 52. My belief is that the landing gear actuators themselves have locking balls internal to the actuator that are indeed what holds the gear down and LOCKED...but I am not 100% sure of this since I have never worked on one. Any comments on the actuator and if something can break allowing what happened here to happen... would be appreciated. Mark Bitterlich N50YK

--> Yak-List message posted by: "cpayne@joimail.com" <cpayne@joimail.com> TJ, Nobody is STARTING rumors. I never implied that ACM was being simulated; however they do fly acro, this I have seen. Yes it was T-6 #3 that went down in a remote area where recovery crew had to get to with a bulldozer. #3 was not damaged by hurricanes but did have wing attach angles and bolts replaced. One wing was located displaced from the wreckage; cause undetermined at this time. Many in my area know this operation and the good folks that operate it up to the best of their ability and professional standards. However, as when doing any acro, *stuff* could happen. All of us Yakkers should observe good practices such as aerobatic prefighting and being careful not to exceed operational limits....sometimes our guys get into the excitment of the chase when we are in extended trail. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Roger Doc Kemp" <viperdoc@mindspring.com> All the more reason to know what you fly and fly what you know. Before we pass judgement on the dead man, we need to wait on the NTSB report. That being said, ACM should be left in Pandora's Box for the vast majority of the YAK'rs. Those with ACM training pair up with similar types, do a gut check and press on if that lights your fire. But teaching it to novices, I'm sure I do not want to be in the boat. I'm going to shut up because this will probably restart the To ACM or not To ACM thread. ACM is a surefire way to over G an airplane. I'm not sure I have ever seen what the rolling G limit is on this airplane. If some are so inclined, go for it. Its your airplane, your ass, our insurance rates, and our reputation if you bust something. Subject: Re: Yak 52 Gear
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Walter Lannon" <wlannon@cablerocket.com> Mark; The ball lock assembly is not the down lock per se. That is the function of the over center position of the drag link, side stay or strut. Gear collapse loads are reacted directly through this component preventing any such loading reaching the gear actuators. Were this not so severe loading of an extended actuator would result in gear collapse by bending of the actuator rod with the ball lock engaged (assuming the ball lock is capable of carrying that load, it may not be). This applies to the CJ nose gear and, I expect, all three on the Yak 52. (The CJ main gear actuators are retracted for gear down) The purpose of the ball lock is exactly the same as the over-center latch on most western aircraft. It keeps the down lock strut in the over center position. Without this feature rough ground, bounces, etc. could cause loss of over-center and gear collapse. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Cathie" <cathieann@frontiernet.net> This is in response to the recent MayDay we sent out referencing the High CHT temps. We wish to extend many thanks to all of you for your quick responses and suggestions. It was great. It seems that the general consensus shows, we are within "normal" parameters. We might be a little on the high side, and we are going to take the advice of many and check the mag timing. This is something that everyone who might want to calibrate their probe and gauges... We checked our temperature probe accuracy with a digital infrared heat/temperature gun. (pretty cool tool). Available from Radio shack. With the engine running and the cowling off, just point and shoot. This thing is so accurate that it will fluctuate a few degrees because of the cylinder head fins if you move your hand slightly. Just point at the probe inlet. We found our probe and gauge to be within 6 degrees. Thank you, Rick Gasper Jeff Krings
