I installed a Garmin 300xl gps/com, mounted underneath the panel, with a Narco
transponder next to it. I am happy with it, but if you are tall you should check
your knee clearance. YOu can pick up the garmin from Chief for around $2500.
Not bad for a moving map gps and a com radio. It is also IFR capable

Becker units are very good. The VHF radio requires a 24 to 12 volt
converter because it is a 12/14 volt unit only. But the transponder is a
24/28 volt unit. No converter required. The VHF does have a built in
intercom, should you want to use it. Becker units have a 3 year warranty as
well.

Fellow YAKkers-
Anyone have any helpful hints or suggestions regarding replacement of
the air
compressor on an M14P?
Personal experiences (however painful) are solicited...
Jon Lowrey
Jon,
The 11mm Russian air compressor wrench is very helpful. Looks like a
small cylinder base wrench. Beware, it's not very strong and easily
broken! Been there...done that.
The worst nut to get off/on is the one at about 11 o'clock as you look
at the compressor mount. It's hidden behind the compressor cylinder. I
bought several cheap 11mm wrenches and bent them at various angles to
reach the nuts.
The job is a PITA, but it's doable. Good Luck,
Steve Dalton

I have install radios in 5 cjs. I have installed all of them with a Garmin
250xl gps/comm, a 28 to 14 volt converter, King kt76a trans with a ACK a30
encoder and a Sigtronics spa400 intercom. I install them in the right panel
by moving the lighting control to the right deck panel, moving the fuel
gauge to the upper right of the center panel and the fuel lights and switch
up to the fuel gauge hole. I did this by over laying the right side panel
with .025 2024T3 and puting the radios in the bottom of the panel. Than
send the panel out for powder coating to match the other panel. I have
photos if you want, contact me off list and I'll e-mail them to you. Also I
have just put a cj on Barnstormers with this package.

The problem I had with the GTX 320 was that it was unstable in frequency. One
TRACON even pink-slipped me on the transponder which required me to ground the
aircraft until the problem was solved.
I recently checked with one of the top avionics shops about it and they said
they have had many problems with the GTX 320 which were exacerbated by the
unwillingness of Garmin to allow them to be repaired in the field. As a
result, they no longer recommend the unit.
I am sure that some or perhaps many work just fine. I am only pointing out
that I have had troubles and upon checking, had my problems confirmed by a top
avionics shop.
And someone else recommended the Sigtronics intercom. I have had so many
problems with Sigtronics that I have stopped using them too (four intercoms in
three different aircraft).
So it is possible to get good and bad reports on any vendor. Probably the best
thing to do is to go to a big shop and ask the technicians (NOT the sales
guys) which ones go out in airplanes and don't come back for repair since they
are likely to see a greater cross-section of products and and have a feeling
of failure rate over many aircraft.

I second this... I have a Garmin 300 and the bit where it knows the CTAF
frequency of the airport you're headed to and you can just put the cursor
on it and jump that onto "standby" -- that's the kind of time saver that
lets you keep your attention on better things.
I also put a Collins PN-101 HSI in my airplane, which -- despite many dire
warnings -- has withstood 900+ hours of my flying like a drunk bug. The
CJ is so stable that you can really fly it +/- a half degree on the
heading and the Collins' heading bug and layout lets you work within that
standard.

I'm not fond of my GTX-320, either. I had to replace a face-plate -- not
cheap.
Keep in mind that there will be some circumstances (getting caught at an
airshow, whatever) where your airplane may wind up outside and have rain
fall on it, and your cockpit is going to get wet.

I don't think you need a converter for the Garmin equipment, if memory
serves it is good from 8-32V, don't remember about the intercom.

Jon,
Other than what I wrote in the off-line email, use the long, curved at the
end, T- handle, 11mm box end tool that came with your TW tool kit. It is
designed specifically to access the 6, tough-to-get-to, 11mm nuts holding
the compressor in place. The real challenge is not getting them off. It's
getting them back on. It will tax your patience.
Gaining clear access to the compressor is most important. So move or remove
whatever you have to for accessibility. Other than that, there is no
"tricks" to R & R a compressor.

The Garmin 250XL and 350XL are both 14 volt and require a convert and the
same for King KT76A or they call it a resistor.

Jon,
Regardless of what avionics you decide to install I offer the following
for your consideration. I fly a YAK 50 and had a King radio and
transponder installed beneath the panel in a "stack"configuration between
my knees . Everything seemed just fine at first glance until subsequent
use revealed I had trouble reading the freq. panel because the radio was
installed at too flat an angle and with most light conditions my eyes
were not at such an angle to read clearly the too flat facing panel. I
would have had to get my head down too low and scrutinize the panel. This
is not good for outside awareness.
I subsequently changed the configuration to a greater up slanted angle
more easily accommodated to the eye position from which I viewed the
panel . Bright sunlight in low wing aircraft without some form of panel
shading can pose a problem, perhaps more exacerbated in a tailwheel
airplane while on the ground, in a three point attitude ,with the pilot
looking more directly toward the brightly lighted sky. Admittedly, not as
serious in your CJ , but a consideration in any "greenhouse"cockpit.
Hope this helps

Thanks to all the people who worked so hard to make Red Star 2005 the best Red

A good time was had by all.
It was a lot of work setting up the event and I certainly appreciate all the hard
work.
Thanks.

I had trouble with my Garmin GX 320 when I first got it..... Apparently
they had trouble with the first generation of these units, but got their
problems resolved. After I put the second new replacement unit in, it has
worked flawlessly!
