Does anyone have any experience to share regarding the ipaq or other PDA GPS
There seems to be quite a variety of models, GPS tracker iinterfaces and
software.

Ira:
I have used the Anywhere Map software since they introduced it. Works well
with Ipaq and Dell Axim. I would say the Ipaq screen is a little nicer in
all lighting situations.
Anywhere has a number of add-on databases - roads, water, airport diagrams,
nukes and stadiums, etc. You can add as many as you want. $100.00 per year
subscription gets you all software and 28 day airspace updates.
I use the Holux CF card gps which came with remote antenna
(http://www.semsons.com/comflasgpsre.html). I've found that the GPS tracks
just fine strapped to my kneeboard without the external antenna, however,
the deck between the cockpits in the Yak is ideal for the remote antenna.
The Semsons site has a number of CF GPS units - I think I would opt for one
that pivots - these were not available when I bought mine.
How about some formation practice this weekend?

Ira,
I use Mapopolis http://www.mapopolis.com/ with my HP IPAQ in my car or when
I travel. Also use to have the IPAQ in the plane at one point but switched
to a Garmin - just easier to work than the IPAQ.

I've got a MIO 168 with POCKET FMS (http://www.pocketfms.com/) software
installed, works excellent, also with the sun shining on the screen. the 168
has an internal GPS receiver, no antenna's required.

I have a IPAQ 5500 that I run the Anywhere map on. It is couple to a
Tracker blue GPS reciever. When it works, it is great. I can hardly ever
get it to release the com port #8 (the port it communicates with the
tracker blue gps on). Yes, I have gone in an turned off the ms active sync,
closed the program, had it search for the gps, reset the gps
settings...ect. The pocket plates with the moving map is great for SA on
approches....when the @#$@!'d gps will link with blue tooth. Otherwise you
are condemed to putting a cigarette lighter in you YAK to run the gps by
cable. Also means alot of extra wires running in your cockpit.
If I had it to do again and the Garmin 296 were avialable when I went with
this system...Hands down, would have gotten a 296. It has everything the
Anywhere map has and works when called up.
The IPAQ works in bright light situations, but not well. I have a Garmin
295 mounted on a RAM mount with the optional mounting strap attaching it to
the cooling vent tube. It sits between my legs, angle slightly up, and is
sheilded well enough from the sun that it can be read at just about any
pitch attitude and sunlight setting.
Like I said if I had it to do over and the 296 were avialable at the time,
I would have chosen it first. The price is about the same. You can go to
Garmin/Jeppson as needed for online updates and you do not have to purchase
an annual subscription like you do for Anywhere Map updates.

I agree with Doc - working in IT means I have had just about enough with
computer type devices, and for the sake of reliability etc. would also
go with Garmin. I have owned several PDA's over the years (all top of
the range at the time), and ALL of them have let me down somewhere along
the line. Off subject perhaps but I have now given up totally on PDAs
and use my cellphone synched with outlook to have my diary & contacts
available at all times. The other wizardry I can live without.
I have the 196 for the Yak52 & my car, and 296 in the L-29, this I chose
together with a nav/com combo over a 430. This way if one of them
breaks, I have the other. And I do take it home to upload waypoints,
update software, download tracks etc. from time to time. Funny enough
one of the nicest features I appreciate with the 296 (not documented in
marketing info) is that using aux power, it will turn itself on just
like a panel mount when turning on ships power, AND charge the internal
battery, and turn itself off again (with an option to keep it powered
up) when turning off ship power. Voila, instant no-brainer electrical
system redundancy, no hassle, no wires, no clutter, etc.
In the Yak I took off the cradle from the yoke mount, fashioned a
bracket from thin steel, rubber mounted it with silicon tube over the
bolts and rubber grommets, just below the clock between my knees. Use
the cradle with the locking tab that comes with the yoke mount and chuck
the others away (or use in car), the other ones are not robust enough.
This arrangement takes +7 -5g, snaps etc., and will not come loose, but
is isolated from vibration.
Sorry if this is overshare in terms of original question!

Possibly because I am not familiar with a Yak 52; I do not understand how you fasten
a Garmin 296 to a "stick" type of aircraft. I have a Garmin 296 that I
use in my Cessna 182; but do not move it to my CJ-6 for lack of knowing how
to mount it in the CJ and not block some other instruments that I consider important.
If you have some pics, I would be interested. I too went thru the Anywhere
+ Ipaq and find the Garmin 296 to be superior in all aspects. rb

I got some parts from a Ram mount and placed a ball on the top of my
airscoop. Articulating arms attach to a ball mount on the back of the 296.
You can place the 296 just above the artificial horizon. Easy to see and
reach. I will take some photos tomorrow.
Jim Shafer.
