Well we have finally got the smoke working on our Nanchang and it's working
great. So well in fact we are going to have to get a few drums of smoke oil
to keep up with it......Which leads me to the questions.
Firstly does anyone have a "Recipe" for a good smoke oil mix and I noticed
when pulling and slipping during aeros the cockpit literally filled with
smoke, although it dissipated fairly quickly it still wasn't very pleasant
to sit there gasping for air through it. What have you found and is a good
way of preventing/ejecting it somehow and what about wearing a mask. I have
a Campbell's Aero classic Helmet and mask and was thinking I could wear a
particle mask underneath it.......
Thanks in advance.

Lance,
Good questions all.
First you must recognize that the smoke is only visible exhaust.
That's right, up to now you've been breathing this much exhaust, only
NOW you are able to see it. So... you really need to seal your cockpit
from those deadly fumes.
I use the aluminum tape in most places. You have to completely seal
all holes in the wheel wells. Including the nose gear (especially in
the aft portion of the nose wheel). There is an inspection plate there
that must be sealed up.
Next remove the cover for the inlet cool air to the oil cooler and the
wing faring. Notice these holes in the fuselage. Those holes must be
sealed up.
Finally make sure there is a good seal around the stick(s). A good
bit of exhaust will enter thru here.
Exit the air? Some of the guys at the Skunk Works have converted the
small right aft inspection cover on the fuselage to and exit air vent.
They swear by this and I intend to do the same, however I cannot find a
source to have this done. This seems like a great idea. Can anyone
help me?
A word of caution, once while doing a late afternoon performance I
managed to be in an inverted aerobatic position with smoke on and found
the aircraft facing the setting sun. WIth the cockpit smoke and sun
combined in this manner it managed to completely white out ALL vision.
This is very dangerous doing low level aerobatics, you have NO SA until
it clears.
As for smoke oil? Start doing air shows, they give it to you for free.
:) Otherwise use Shell Carnea Oil or Corvus. It is the type used for
coating forms before pouring concrete. Seems to work the best. If you
want to get serious in your shopping check for oils that have the lowest
flash point. This will give you the most complete burn and best smoke.
Do not try and color the smoke because of the likelyhood that the color
additives will be corrosive.
Congratulations on your smoke. Have fun.

Folks,
All Red Star keeps getting better every year with Barry Hancock (RPA BoD and SW
Regional Coordinator) commiting a great deal of effort there...
As are all the events folks connect to the enjoyment of owning/operating their
aircraft: Waycross GA (Shane Golden, SE RC), Oshkosh (Herb Coussons, NC RC), KGED
(Adrian, Belinne, NE RC & Charlie Lynch RPA BoD), Oliver B.C. (Paul Dumoret,
NE RC) and the joint EAA events on the "eastside" with Scott McMillian (SC
RC), and all their volunteers and friends...
The RPA always needs new foward thinking folks from the membership to step forward
and steer the ship, and this summer is a great opportunity for this with four
Board seats up for election, and I can authorize a set number of additional
seats based on the bylaws governing the association. The infrastructure, from
web, online store, regional leadership, expanding events and preservation of
our non profit status with the Feds are in place; what we need now is a constructive
body of elected officers who can work together to raise the bar for the
membership. In corporate sponsorship alone, we have huge potential to move
the association and its operations forward in new directions that will directly
benefit the membership...
Dee Grimm the RPA VP is setting up the quarterly Board Meeting and the hot topic
is elections, if you would like to join an expanded RPA Board and work with
your fellow aviators from around the USA and Canada, please email Dee at deegrimm@cox.net
with a short bio and why you would like to run ("I want to lead the
Board Committee that obtains free aviation fuel from BP at all RPA events" ;)
If you're an active RPA member, RC, Event Organizer, Store, Treasury or other officer,
and want to help steer the association, email Dee and let him know - we
will be discussing the July Board Elections and forming a committee to conduct
the membership wide voting procedure based on the bylaws in place.
Thanks for listening,

Pappy and I are at the Ft. Fierce, FL air-show and practiced today as Darstardly
Dudes in Luftwaffe markings harassing our proud American boys in support of
Grubby German re-enactors. Appropriately, we were shot down by a Hero P-51 (after
airboss gave him vectors).
Point: you would not believe how sinister an ordinary CJ-6 looks in Swasticas and
Crosses! Pics to follow next week.
PS: we had to make it easy on the US Air piloted P-51...

Lance,
Regarding the smoke oil. I did some searching for concrete form oil here in
Godzone and the only thing I came up with has a proprietary name of Formol.
It is horrendously expensive unless you can get it in 200 Litre drums so
Terry's advice to get it from the air show organisers is a good'n. I know
that a few of the Yak guys here are running diesel. Formol has dieseline as
it's main component along with fatty acid and a little red dye so caution
breathing it in may raise your cholesterol. I can send you the spec sheet
off list if you would like.
Cheers,
Frewju.

Hi Graeme,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately we are holding the airshow so either way
we still have to come up with the oil!!!
We were graciously given the remainder of the "Roulettes" smoke oil when
they came up and performed at one of our previous airshows but we are
running low and will need to come up with something soon as the next airshow
is on in another 3 weeks time.
I must say there is a lot of diesel in the oil I used last week as I ate a
lot of it when I was trying it out during my aerobatic routine!!!
I thought someone out there may have had a recipe for it as it appeared to
have the consistency of say 50% Diesel and 50% 10W mineral oil........but
that was just my guess.
Anyhow if you can email me with that data sheet We can go from there and if
there is anyone else who might have some ideas they will be greatly
appreciated.
