Is anybody on this list in South Africa? If so, could you please drop me a
line. I need to ask some questions.
Thanks in advance!

Subject: | Airwomen of the Red Star~ Soviet Combat veterans of WWII |
--> Yak-List message posted by: yakparts@simplyweb.net
Group,
I have been organizing an incredibly historic event and it will soon
come to fruition. I am bringing 5 Russian WWII lady air veterans to
San Diego, next month. The youngest of them is 80 years old. The
likelihood of a gathering of these women in this country again is
highly unlikely. There will be a symposium event at the San Diego
Aerospace Museum on June 18th at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. (See
www.aerospacemuseum.org and click on "Airwomen of the Red Star" for
more details.) I also have one of the premiere historians on the
subject of Russian airwomen of WWII, Dr. Kazimiera J. Cottam,
moderating the symposium. In addition, Anne Noggle author of A Dance
With Death and WASP will be in attendance. (There will be a
convergence of WASP at this event.) Her portraits of these women will
be on display. I have worked doggedly to raise the funds to pay for
these ladies to make their incredible journey. I am very grateful for
the generous support from my customers and individuals.
I am amazed by the number of Americans who are shocked to learn how
many Russians were killed in WWII. The story of the Russian women who
maintained and flew combat in PO-2s, PE-2s (twin engine bombers) and
Yak fighters is one that will be told in June. The short biographies of
these Russian heroines are as follows:
46th Guards Bomber Regiment
The 588th Air Regiment was activated in the summer of 1942 and in 1943
was honored by being designated as a Guards regiment. Henceforth, the
regiment was officially known as the 46th Taman Guards Bomber Regiment.
The regiment was equipped with the Po-2, a Polikarpov open-cockpit
biplane made of fabric and wood, fitted with a 100 hp five-cylinder
radial engine. The mission of the night bomber regiment was to destroy
tactical targets located close to the front lines, such as fuel depots,
ground troops bridges and ammunition dumps. The Po-2 was fitted with
bomb racks and a light machine gun in the rear cockpit. The crew relied
heavily on the dark of night for protection when flying over heavily
defended targets. This was an all-female regiment: mechanics, pilots,
radio controllers, etc.
Nadezhda Vasiliezna Popova
Po-2 Pilot, Squadron Commander
Hero of the Soviet Union ~ (She was personally honored by Vladimir
Putinon May 9th.)
Flew 852 combat Missions, shot down several times (Please keep in mind
that the "Night Witches" flew the Po-2 at night, in the Russian winter.
Typically they flew 5 - 10 missions a night. Nadezhda Popova flew an
incredible 18 missions, one evening. Hitler awarded a special medal to
anyone shooting down a Po-2. Oh I almost forgot.....no lights, no
radios and no parachutes until almost the very end of the war!)
586th Air Defense Fighter Regiment
The 586th became operational in April 1942. As a defense regiment, it=92s
primary duty was to guard important targets from enemy bombers and to
escort aircraft of important persons. The regiment was initially
equipped with the Yak-1, a single-seat low-wing aircraft with a 1,100
hp engine. It had a top speed of 400 mph and carried two small caliber
machine guns.
Tamara Ustinovna Pamyatnykh
Yak Pilot, Squadron Commander
Shot down German bombers (See her incredible story in this month's
issue of Aeroplane Monthly!)
Awarded Soviet Order of the Red Star
King of England presented gold watch for heroics
Ekaterina Kuzminichna Polunina
Sr. Mechanic, maintaining Yaks during war
Now the 586th regiment historian
The 125th Guards Dive Bomber Regiment
The 587th Bomber Regiment was honored during the war and was renamed
the 125th M.M. Raskova Borisov Guards Bomber Regiment. The aircraft
flown by this regiment were considered to be the most complex of the
Soviet-made aircraft. Less experienced pilots were often afraid of the
Petlyakov Pe-2, while more competent pilots were said to love it. The
twin-engine, twin-tail dive bomber was powered by two 1,100 hp engines
and could reach a maximum speed of 336 mph at 16,400 feet. It carried a
crew of three: pilot, navigator-bombardier, tail-gunner and a 1,000 kg
bomb load.
Galina Pavlovna Brok-Beltsova
Pe-2 Navigator-Bombardier
Survived Focke-Wulfe attack
Anna Ivanovna Kirilina
Armament Mechanic for Pe-2
Attached bombs, prepped machine guns
For anyone that would like to attend the event, but cannot make it,
Anne Noggle and Dr. Cottam will both be selling and signing their
books. The ladies will also autograph the books. I am willing to
obtain the books for you, if you would like.
If you would like more details, please contact me off-list at :
yakparts@simplyweb.net
If anyone would like to contribute to this project I will be happy to
provide full details for contributions. They are tax-deductible
through the San Diego Aerospace Museum. (Again, please contact me
off-list.)
Thank you,
Jill Gernetzke

Subject: | RE: CJ-6 for sale? |

Rick:
My airplane is a Nanchang CJ-6 with Yak 52 firewall-forward (M14P with
inverted systems). It has a metallic green paint with Chinese markings and
stripes. It has smoke system and 24V onboard air compressor (APU). Canopy
glass is US and light smoke color. There are two missiles under the wings
located at hard points (fake and can be removed in minutes if desired). The
airplane has Terra digital Nav with GS and Tri-Nav C display, along with
Terra Digital 760 Com and Terra transponder. Most important instruments
were changed to US (airspeed, altimeter). It has a EI digital tachometer
and a Jasco alternator system and a PS Engineering warbird intercom system.
It has a 23 gallon auxiliary fuel tank bringing the total onboard to 63
gallons. It has a belly strobe and uses original com antenna. It's in
great shape and is a "pre-moratorium" airplane with generalized operating
limitations. The operating limitations and CofA have unlimited expiry
(issued early June 1993).
It is currently hangared in Payson, AZ (PAN).
I am asking $105K but will take $95K firm.
I was going to put it on the market in July when I will have the time to
sell it. If you want more information I can gather it up for you and put
photos on the web, etc... I could sell it before July but you'll have to
bear with me getting all the logs and other paperwork together (I have three
hangars in two states). I live near El Paso and fly my Comanche over to
Payson to fly it about once a month. I will have hangar space for it in
July and will bring it to El Paso then.

Subject: CJ-6 for sale?
Jim,
I caught your posting on the Matronics website and comment that you might be
selling your CJ-6 soon. I will be looking to acquire one soon (as soon as I
can get current after not flying for years).
Do you care to share any info on your plane at this time and probable asking
price? Also, when you think you might be ready to sell?
thanks

I just read an article by Allan Cockrell in this months AOPA Pilot. A
very well written story about a ride he gave in his YAK. Check it out,
its worth the read.

It really is a good article. Read yesterday evening. Alan flies out of
Moontown. It is a little grass strip just outside of Huntsville,Al. Their
squadron up there is known as the River Rat.

Here is a great smoke oil link with multiple smoke brews:

I have been using Canopus 13 from Texaco that my hangar neighbor (crop duster)
uses. He has a 55-gallon drum and I haven't found the bottom of it yet.
