The question of smoke oils comes up now and again, I found the best way to
see whats being used is to track down airshow performers websites and see
what they require be provided in their "requirements list". Even the Blue
Angels and the Thunderbirds list what smoke oil they require, usually via
Mil spec but also list alternatives. An example would be Mike Goullians
website (link below) where he lists his requirements for performing airshows
which includes last I checked 10 smoke oils he considers acceptable for his
performances. He claims Canopus (Corvus) Oil 13 is the best but also lists
the following as acceptable:
Texaco Canopus (Corvus) Oil 13 or 519
Standard Oil Facto 39
Texaco Regal B
Sun Oil Circle X
Shell Carnea 10 or 22
Union Oil Unax 105
Gulf Oil 370
Arco Duro-S 105
Exxon Faxam 40
Military #1010 Eng. Oil
A few of us locally have been using Shell's Diala Oil AX which our local
distributor claims most locals have switched to in lieu of Corvus 13. I've
used SuperDri and the Diala Oil AX is easily equally as good but at a much
better price. I think its really a matter of what you can get from your
local distributor.

FDA-approved smoke oil surely makes a pilot feel good. But what about engine
oils and avgas? Not to mention standard byproducts of combustion including
carbon monoxide and sulfur-based emissions. I know few mechanics that don't
get grease, solvent, laquer thinner or oil under their fingernails every once
in a while. Aircraft paint and finish coatings need no description, and the
Iridium painted on instruments and engine controls is lovely to behold on dark
night flights or even from the solitude of a hospice bed. I'm not sure any
materials commonly encountered in aviation have been "human tested" per FDA
guidelines.
I'm not too concerned about burned light oil released into clear air from
aircraft exhaust. The smoke is merely marking what is already present but
normally invisible. Couldn't be near as bad as second-hand tobacco smoke and
automotive emissions I've encountered in European and Asian locales.
Then again I live on a farm and it is not uncommon for us to use
defoliants (we
still use "Agent Orange", relabled "Prep" to stymie any controvesy) and
restricted-use petsticides released via aircraft, so I may not be the most
objective in these matters.

Jim,
You are surely an exposed man with all those hazardous chemicals around.
But even sport F!@%#*%g carries a risk. Used to be it was from the father
or estraged mate with a loaded weapon, now one can die from a microbe!
What's life without a little exposure?

I am installing bladders in my CJ6. please comment on experiences particulary the
vent system. the original tanks dont feed equally due to yaw but can be corrected
with slight rudder pressure. Any info will be helpful. I dont see what
is wrong with using the original system. Thanks,FORREST
