Subject: | Gear Actuators - Comments and questions. |
--> Yak-List message posted by: <tryon@aviator.org>
For anyone who has time on their gear system, older or newer.. and not yet removed
and inspected the actuators. ( This is for you. )
We chose to remove the actuators, and inspect them / replace seals, etc... during
this annual insp...
Although, it proved quite a challenge to remove the excessivly tight end caps,
requiring the fabrication of a special tool... they are fairly simple to disassemble
and inspect.
For anyone who has been putting this off, we found a fairly severe crack in the
piston rod for one of the main actuators.. The crack was right at the base of
the small diameter shaft (that supports the main piston ) and also some fretting
cracks on the large shaft at the point where it transitions to the smaller
shaft. Had marks on the piston as well, where it had flexed and come incontact
with the lock ring.
I don't think ours would have made it another year!
If anyone needs help with making the tool, for the end caps, I have machinist here
who can make you one of good quality. We copied the design of some tools
I looked at from a shop who builds race car shocks. They only didn't have the
correct size to fit these caps.... I figure the cost of another tool to be around
$200, for the time reqired to fabricate it.. Perhaps less if there are
several people who what them made.
I tried to make one myslef but the pins kept bending and breaking, and tearing
up the holes in the caps. etc.. For the money it wasn't worth the saved aggrivation...
The tool we made has 5 pins to grab in many holes, fit good and
had a long aluminum handle for leverage. Hey, it worked. Still had to use a
2x4 with a slightly smaller hole drilled in it to clamp the actuator in the vise,
but that was easy to make.
-------------------------
On the other side,,, I have found our parts book to be incorrect, for the assembly
of the seals. It shows them in the wrong positions.. the felt "should"
go in the center of the o-rings.
The PT trainer book I got from Doug shows the correct seal installation. My thanks
to Doug for the book, cause I had little or no tolerance info on the actuators
before starting this.
My only question now, is what is the correct grade of Grease to use inside the
actuators, that is compatible with hydraulic fluid and caster oil? The PT book
says, No. 2 grease. Ok... What Aeroshell # is that? I assume aeroshell 22,
but wanted to be sure. I've sent a message to shell, to inquire also, but
wanted to ask the list what others have used... or if anyone has solved this quandry.
Thanks,,, R. Wilson - A&P
