Don
About 5 years ago, the air system control valve in my CJ seized completely.
Like you, I couldn't move it in either direction (I don't know what a 50
has, as opposed to the CJ). We avoided using a breaker bar, but did remove
it, dismantle it and clean all the 30+year old gunk out of it, and I haven't
had any problems since. The same happened to the flap lever, and it got the
same treatment. Again, no problems since.
Have fun!

Troops, family and flying buddies,
Just home from flying the bombers and since I've been all night getting from
OR I'm headed to bed for a nab.
But just had to tell this story before I sack out for awhile.
I had to copilot a B-17 ride yesterday morning in Redmond, OR. before
heading home. An elderly couple were on the airplane and spent much of the ride
standing behind me and the pilot Mac McCully. It was present from their kids
and grand kids for their 60th wedding anniversary.
Big huge grins on their faces obviously enjoying the hell out of it.
Reason?
Their marriage started 60 years ago when they meet as he ( USAAF pilot) and
she (copilot WAAF) were ferrying a B-17 someplace.
"I fell in love with her when I pushed her butt up though the hatch"
"He was so fresh"
That was the last time they had been in a B-17.

Finally back in the air after a week of re torqueing all 9 cylinders to
fix the oil flood ( way too big to be called a leak) .
After about 1.5 hours in the air the engine burbled for a few seconds ,
then smoothed out and ran fine for the remaining 20 minutes back to home
base . On the ground I performed a mag check and found that when I
switched from both to 1 the engine would quit. Not drop a few hundred
RPM, it would quit.
After pulling the left mag cover I found that the breaker points were
open about 2 inches . Further investigation found that the return
spring had broken off of the breaker point assembly.
I've never seen this on either auto's or airplanes ever. Has this
occurred to anyone else ?
Question : is there anything special that I should know in order to
replace the breaker points ?
thanks, Walt

Answer to the have you ever had the engine just stop on doing a mag check
is yes. Try it doing an airborne mag check after the motor did exactly what
you described. Ran fine for a while (about 20 min) and the went whomp only
to catch right back up. Intially the problem resided in the coil of the #2
mag. Replaced the mag and resolved the problem. Did not find a points,
condensor, or spring problem with this particular mag. Dennis Savarese has
more info on this issue than I. I just provided moral support while he
sorted it out on my plane.
