I am using the AirNav planner for my trip to OSH as I usually do. This time I'm
planning for the cheapest fuel but be careful with the results as some prices
are dated. Do a "Check Local Fuel Prices" on suggested stops for currency of
the price as well as drill down on the airport for FBO name, and telno. I usually
call ahead a few days before the trip to verify prices, hours, etc.
First time I used the Planner, I landed at a spot where fuel service had been discontinued.
It was in a desolate part of FL. I wasted considerabe time buying
10 gallons off a guy who was willing to help so I could safely depart to the
nearest fuel.
BTW, this next trip is all about efficiency, not speed. The engine has been retuned
and I'll "ghost" it up there on minimum power, lumbering along at Yak-like
speeds :)

Excellent site. Great news sections and particularly if I need to fly my CJ

However like many of these site, I tested it on known data and found it
wrong. Since I was evolved with a particular situation, I can tell you that all
they tend get their info from the same source (FAA in this case) and even
though that info was up dated some time ago, their sites have not.
Guys/gals beware what you read on the Internet.
Now to plan my flight FD44-HKG. ;-]

Mark & Tom,
I'm afraid Tom is close to right. About half of the residents on our
airpark are Englishmen because they like the freedom of flying here. You ought
to
hear them grip. Fellow American, we simply must never let our government get
that strong.

Hi,
1) There will be parachute riggers on call if you need a repack. Feel
free to bring your spare chutes if they are out of date or are close to
needing a repack.
2) There will be a highly qualified instructor at the event and she can
take care of any lapsed or soon to expire BFRs.
3) One of the photographers will not be able to attend. Does any have
someone we can invite who has professional aerial experience? We will
have a few spots available on the B-25 if anyone has a friend who is an
armature photographer. We are looking for someone who is pretty good,
who will really appreciate the experience and who would be willing to
share pictures with those of us in the group who may want a copy of
their plane in action.
Sean has told me that he has the critical items required for this event
in terms of spare parts, a mechanic on duty and two kegs of ice cold
beer for evening hangar flying of course.
Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.
Take care,
Charlie

Hi Everyone,
I'm building an M-14P powered Pitts Model 12 and am
searching for a mid time, first run, M-14P core. My
intent is to have it on hand while I'm building the
plane and then to have it overhauled when I'm nearing
my first flight.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need one to sell it. But the buyer will have to go through the
hassle of obtaining one. If it's been flying (legally), it will have been
issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate.

Drill and tap the cover plate to accept a standard Schrader valve fitting.
Then reinstall the cover. It's a 1/8" NPT fitting. It's the best solution
you can have. Then all you need is a Schrader valve fitting on the hose
from your scuba cylinder.

Painter rants again...
I know this is an old subject. I bring it up once again only because the
difficulties faced by our brothers and sisters with afflicted T-6's and
T-34's are "fortunate" that their aircraft were produced in an English
speaking county and through sheer dumb luck have US Type Certificates.
Consequently, they are subject to and beneficiaries of Service Bulletins and
Airworthiness Directives under CFR 14 Part 39 et al. Those of us flying
Yak-52's, CJ's etc. aren't so "lucky," even though there are large numbers
of "SB's and AD's" that are applicable, legally binding under US law or not.
An esteemed fellow Yakster emailed me off list to point out that
Experimental aircraft don't have SB's or AD's, though he thoughtfully
appended an SB (or was it an AD?) in Chinese characters (where'd you that
thing any way? Have any more? In English?). While, of course, that's
technically true, the term "Experimental" is merely a legal/political one
for purposes of categorization of civilian aircraft in the US. No, CJ's and
-52's aren't "certificated" airplanes, but they sure ain't "experimental"
(lower case "e") neither, at least not in the minds of the Russians or
Chinese. In fact, military airplanes, regardless of origin, are generally
subject to large numbers of "AD's and SB's," but they may not be issued
under Part 39. There more than 100 such on the Yak-52. No doubt there are
many applicable to CJ's, too, but I've never seen a list, let alone the full
text. If anyone has such a list, and particularly the full text and
drawings, I'd sure like to see it, in English, please, thank you very much.
Doug, Colin? Maybe Bushi Cheng can be prevailed upon by one of our more
influential members who may be off suffering the misfortunes and travails of
a B-24 pilot to obtain said list?
Even though there is a large number of Bulletins on Yak-52's, and the list
is available, getting the full text is no simple matter. I used to be a
dealer for our good friends at Aerostar, made several requests for same, but
never got 'em. I don't think they were trying to hide them, but the full
text for all ran to several hundred pages and had never been fully
translated to English. Mark, Richard, anybody, do you have the full text,
in English?
This list and the RPA are the only "agencies" I know of that provide a
continuing source of information. Anyone tried corresponding with the NAMC?
Some of the information supplied here is strictly "anecdotal," some is
right on the mark. The Yak-52 "Aft Fuselage and Control Linkage FOD
Prevention Barrier" is a good example of something that became well known
because of this list. Are there -52's flying without the barrier? I'm sure
there are. Is it "required" by FAR in the US? No. Are there are other
problems most of us are unaware of? You bet. Will they kill some of us.
Yes. Does the FAA care? They do.
Fact is the term "experimental" very much applies to the operation of CJ's,
52's etc. in the US. If someone became aware of or suffered a mechanical
problem that could afflict my aircraft I would certainly like to have the
problem assessed by technically competent people and brought to my
attention, since virtually any sort of mechanical problem can be life
threatening to me, my pax and innocent bystanders. Both the Russians and
Chinese provide such a service--but not to us civilians. In the meantime,
we're strictly on our own. And every airplane is subject to a rolling-G
limit that is lower than its "straight-ahead" load limit. I don't believe
for a nanosecond that any non-pilot who ever bought a ride or "training" any
ever pulled the wings off any airplane. Surprises for the PIC? Oh, yes,
once in a great while. Wing failures? NFW. They puke first. Just ask me.
And my good friends Dennis et al, I don't think just anyone, pilot or not,
is legally allowed to perform any inspection or most maintenance, nor is it
a good idea, Sport Light notwithstanding. Sorry. Honorable people may
disagree.
While I also don't believe 4000 hour CJ's, 2000 hour -52's and 100 hour
-50's are unsalvageable scrap or permanently un-airworthy, neither the
Russians nor the Chinese retired them for purposes of unemployment
prevention. They rode them hard, put them away wet and often didn't have
the means, skill or parts needed to effect proper repairs in the field, nor
was it economically sensible. Sitting outside doesn't do them any good,
either. And, as a matter of fact, they actually were often maintained by
"illiterate" peasants, albeit with some degree of training, see also above.
If you've ever noticed the hobnail boot marks on wing skins and fuselage,
dents from seat belts being thrown over cockpit sides etc., you'd have to
wonder about the pilots, too. NAMC recommends any airplane not received
directly from them should be "rejected."
Simple bolt-togethers with a paint job ain't "ground-up restorations," any
more than an IRAN is a reman, especially when performed by untrained people
without benefit of parts, manuals, SB's or AD's.
Also: Hey, parachutes, flight suits, helmets, boots, formations and ACM are
great fun, but remember what happened after the "Experimental" F-86 crash
thirty-five years ago? Watch the rolling G's, heads up and collars down
please.
Oh. One more thing. Craig, my main man, pardner, good buddy, he behind the
mask upon the white stallion who makes the CJ go faster than a speeding
silver bullet, you can be my wing man any time, but you're not really gonna
put swastikas on your CJ are you? Sigh... They'll just slow you down.
Believe it now and hear me later--I read it on this list, I think. And the
sun has officially been observed in the skies over Seattle 24/7/365.
Dale Carnegie? Don't think I know him.
That is all.
