I've really become a fan of the multi-weight oil, but alas the stock of
Aeroshell 15W-50 at Sams Club seems to have been a one-time-deal. I
bought the last four cases at under $10 a case as they were closing out...
oh, sigh. :-)
Since I'm flying nearly 10 hours per week, I'm thinking of getting oil in
the 55 gallon drum. I have two questions...
First, is there anything in particular that I should know or avoid when
getting oil this way?
Second, with summer coming up is 25W-60 a better idea than 15W-50?
Thanks,
Jon

Jon:
I've been buying Phillips 25-60 in the 55 gal. drums. The pump I use takes
10 strokes per gallon. I saved the quart and gallon containers from all the
cases I purchased over the years and fill them as needed. Our distributor
will deliver for free up to a certain radius. Last drum worked out to about
a 30% discount over case lots. Have been using it for 600+ hours in the Yak
and about 125 in a Wilga 80.

Well, I'm just back from Denver and the EAA Rocky Mountain Fly-In. We
put up 12 aircraft both days, and pretty much displayed the whole
mainstay of the fleet with CJs, Yak-52's and a Yak-50. The show
consisted of 2 passes of 8 at 800' opposed by a 4 ship lead by Kong at
300'....9 of the 12 aircraft had smoke, so we pretty much killed all
the bugs in east Denver. The 3rd pass was same way with "Red Flight"
(Kong, Flipper, and Team Red) diving down on us and initiating a break
right over the top of us to split off Team Red for their performance.
That was followed by a 10 ship Pyramid pass. Team Red then did their
thing and joined us at the end for a 12 ship photo pass followed by 3
4-ship echelons for the break. The applause, thumbs ups, and salutes
from the crowds as we taxied by couldn't help ya but feel good....
This is a real testament to our FAST training. 12 guys who've never
all flown together before (at the same time) putting on what many
described as their "favorite" act of the entire air show. Too cool....
Thanks to Scott McMillian, who despite having the responsibility of the
Air Talent Coordinator for the entire event, made it all happen for us.
Joe "Felix" Wilkins did a great job as first time Super Lead, and
everybody else sucked it up pretty well in the less than smooth summer
afternoon Mile High thermals...hopefully somebody has some decent
pictures...
Participants who dutifully and honorably represented your association
as "Star flight" are:
RED FLIGHT (opposing 4 ship)
Scott "Kong" McMillan (Yak-52...the most authentic paint you'll ever
see)
Keith "Flipper" Harbour (CJ)
Terry "Pumper" Calloway (CJ)
Roger "Dino" Modglin (sp?) (Yak-52)
WHITE FLIGHT
Joe "Felix" Wilkins (Yak-52)
Tom "Cosmo" Johnson (Yak-50....and now his own insurance
agency...better service you will not find!)
"Popeye" (shoot, I've never called him anything else!....Yak-52)
PJ Ashura (Yak-52)
BLUE FLIGHT
Barry "Bdog" Hancock (CJ-6...BIG thanks to Jeff "Fiddler" Pritchard for
letting me fly his CJ!)
H.O. "Pickle" Beckett (Yak-52)
Craig "Crash" Eckberg (CJ-6)
Skip "Ranger" Slyfield (CJ-6)
Great job guys....looking forward to next year!
Cheers,
Barry

Yep, you guys looked great. I'd say a better performance than I saw at SNF
this year. Spacing was spot on for everyone. Smoke was impressive and
"smoke on" was near simultaneous (little things count). Fortunately the
wind carried it away from the deadline so everyone could see.
What really worked was "opposing" flight of four. The crowd didn't have to
wait as long for a Red Star pass and it kept the interest level up. Smart
move, whoever came up with that.
Too bad you were all garrisoned across the field, but at least I saw Kilo
and Jill... well, as long as I saw Jill I was good.
Pumper and Dino did a move during the Team Red performance I hadn't seen
them do before consisting of 180 offset barrels around the same axis... the
crowd loved it as much as I did. Considering the density altitude they had
to contend with, Team Red was exceptional... even the girls from "Appaloosa"
liked it d8
).
Cheers,
Stitch

Troops
Back from the 21 airplane get together at GED. A 16 plane formation plus a
close-up and personal formation with a B-25 "Ponchito" were my personal joys.
BTW, all you can hear when next to a B-25 is the short stacks on its Wrights.
I should have a very nice head-on "cleavage" shot from that.
It was nice hanging on to Bill Mills' wing for the 5 hours and 3 legs up
there. Typical of a Navy puke, he went over the middle of the Atlantic in a
short-cut (At least it seem that far to me). I got nervious as hell (I can swim
but not that far) and wouldn't you know the engine started running rough.
At Shawn's place, we were surrounded by Migs, Yak 9s, and a C-130. I had a
great meal at "Pickles" along with great table company. The school bus was a
"trip"! Everything well organized. They even let see to see my wife,
daughter, daugher-in-law and all my grand-kids for a few minutes between sorties.
I conducted 3 successful Wingmen Flight Checks. The Flight Leads and
Instructors who got them ready did a fine job.
