Subject: Official Usage Guideline [Please Read] [Monthly Posting]
DNA: do not archive --> Yak-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com Dear Lister, Please read over the Yak-List Usage Guidelines below. The complete Yak-List FAQ including these Usage Guidelines can be found at the following URL: http://www.matronics.com/FAQs/Yak-List.FAQ.html Thank you, Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Administrator ****************************************************************************** Yak-List Usage Guidelines ****************************************************************************** The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Yak-List. You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein. Failure to use the Yak-List in the manner described below may result in the removal of the subscribers from the List. Yak-List Policy Statement The purpose of the Yak-List is to provide a forum of discussion for things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established: - Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc. - THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it. - Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and responses. - Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address, aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary space in the archive. - DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the web page or FAQ first. - If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it easy to find threads in the archive. - When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive can not be overstated! - When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the "reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your response to the original poster. You might have to actively address your response with the original poster's email address. - DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large. - When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly contribute something valuable. - Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing. ------- [This is an automated posting.]

You will get guys that will scream that you are adding another point of failure to the system. In theory, anyway, this is true. However, as a matter of practical application these valves (at least the one's that Bill Blackwell installs) are off of military aircraft. They fail to the open position and are built like a Sherman Tank. The knife valve is directly driven by gears and having a shear type failure of the metal that would cause a "false open" indication is, well.....your chances of that happening are about on par with pulling the wings off of a T-34 in straight and level flight. There are dozens and dozens of these things installed in CJ's without any unit failures (not to mention the 10's of thousands installed in military applications). The internal shutoff ball valve is adequate *if* you constantly clean it and *if* you fly several times a week...if it was otherwise doing the job there wouldn't be so many of us going to the tank shut off valve...FWIW, even Vladimir Yastremski is a proponent of the oil tank shutoff. As per your concern above, even in hand starting you depress the start button, which is disabled unless the micro switch on the OPEN side of the valve is engaged. Every system has it's own risks. For me, the risks are virtually non-existent and the benefits (saves oil, keeps the hangar floor clean, lessens the chance of hydraulic lock, etc.) are significant. As our good friend Mr. Lloyd says, YMMV. Barry Barry Hancock President/CEO Worldwide Warbirds, Inc. 1-866-L39-JETS cell (949) 300-5510 www.worldwidewarbirds.com www.sharedsquadrons.com

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> Jim, Everyone knows the guys that are experts in the field of successfully importing foreign aircraft, they make their living at it, and have paid their dues over the years in deals gone bad and money lost. They have winnowed down the list of foreign players to a scant few that are trustworthy, men who do what they say they are going to do. These names are jealously guarded and for good reason. If you had spent the past 10 to 20 years importing foreign aircraft, cultivating associations with foreign vendors, would you cheerfully pass that information on to others so they could compete with you and possible make it harder for you to make a living? I think if you honestly ask yourself this question you will come up with the correct answer. The importers are a crucial part of our aviation community, and I would encourage you to support them, at least contact them and try to work out a deal within your price range. Again, my advice to you would be to support the system, use a reputable US based dealer who knows the ropes in the eastern bloc countries. Many importers will cut you a deal if they are dealing with 100% your money up front. I have brought in aircraft (from China) for $5K over cost, using 100% of the customers money. Look it as if it were insurance. If you go it alone you may or may not get what you pay for, or like a guy I know of who got nothing at all....for 50K! Right now I am strung out for 18K for engines from Russia that it looks like I will never get. Rather I get my money back is also looking questionable. As a importer, I have no choice but to shrug my shoulders and remember the name of that vendor, it's part of the cost of doing business in a foreign country. If you want his name I'll be happy to give it to you ;>) Go with the guys that do it for a living, support the system, everybody wins that way. By the way, At this time I do not import Yak 52's, only CJ6's and CJ5's and parts for the same. If you need a list of Yak 52 importers I'll be more than happy to give you what I have. Good luck.
