Not sure how any red blooded young single Naval "Officer" would be around a room full of "Southern Debutants" though. I do know how young red blooded Air Force Officers act. Don't care what racial mix you have. ETOH, young Officers, and beautiful young ladies in white evening gowns is a lethal combination. Hum, brings to mind wild oats from days gone by. Would like to have seen the following week's Gulfport-Biloxi Tribune's society page after that one! Bet it was a hoot! --> Yak-List message posted by: "Richard Goode" <richard.goode@russianaeros.com> Spencer Rawlings wrote to me about the Service Bulletin issue - my reply: In order to simplify my life, I have passed all the control and management of my maintenance and spares business to my landlords at White Waltham Airfield where we are based. The only relevance of this is that they are now the owners of the Service Bulletins, but are keen to help. In the UK we have to have compliance with all 114 Service Bulletins. I am waiting for a definitive figure from our principal Russian engineer who is on holiday. However, I reckon there are 23 Service Bulletins that are genuinely safety-critical. I have spoken to Pete Shaw who runs the maintenance for Russian aircraft, and he is happy to take copies of these Bulletins - remember that it is quite complicated in that there are many individual pieces of paper; some are small and others are big technical drawings. We would be happy to give these to one person who would undertake to translate them to a high standard and to disseminate. Pete is happy to do this copying for free, but I wouldn't underestimate the amount of work needed to get them properly and technically translated. I certainly couldn't ask, or indeed expect Pete to take copies for everyone who might want them - that really would be a huge job, and he is trying to run a business! I will get Genna to get a list of the ones we feel are critical. If you look through the list of SBs, clearly the two most important ones are 59 and 60. However, for example, 80 and 88 are additional ones supporting 59. Essentially Yakovlev's view is that with 59 and 60 the aircraft are continued to be cleared to +7G/-5G, and with the addition of 107 can fly 'unlimited.' They are not more specific than that. I hope this helps. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Jeff Linebaugh" <jefflinebaugh@earthlink.net> We just returned from Ava, IL, where memorial services were held Saturday for our good friend Rodger Modglin. For those of you who wanted to attend, but were unable to; the services we extremely well done, befitting a super man. By visiting the beautiful small town (population 700) where he was raised, we learned a lot about Rodger that he didn't share with us. In turn, we were able to share with Rodger's family a bit about the passion he had for flying, and demonstrate the respect and kindred spirit we felt for him. Mike Filucci did a great job of sharing his experiences of teaching formation flying to Rodger, so that the family could understand what was involved in his becoming an Airshow Performer. Terry Calloway then put it all in perspective for us with a heart tugging eulogy for his good buddy and team mate. Later at the graveside, 6 of our finest performed a flawless missing man formation. Ava, IL is about 40 miles southeast of St. Louis. If you ever happen to find yourself flying closeby, I am sure that Rodger would enjoy a flyby, and I guarantee the town's folks will recognize the sound of a radial engine. Godspeed Rodger... --> Yak-List message posted by: ByronMFox@aol.com I can't recall who posted Dave Hirschman's article, "What Air Show Pilots Need to Know about Recent Air Show Accidents," but thanks. Much of what Hirschman wrote can apply to our air show formation flights. For example, I substituted "formation" for "aerobatic" and here's how a portion reads: "We typically fly higher when we practice. We practice in better conditions. We know the terrain and emergency landing areas where we practice. And most importantly, we know that no one is watching. And it's human nature to avoid practicing on hot, hazy, turbulent afternoons -- typical conditions for summer air shows. It's far more enjoyable to go through demanding formation routines on cool evenings or weekend mornings before the wind kicks up. But those kind of conditions don't necessarily prepare pilots for the real-world demands they'll face at actual events. Formation pilots should strive to make their performances as much like practice as possible. The extra burden of having friends, family ... in the crowd should be banished from conscious thought. 'You must be able to fly your routine as if it were a practice,' said Paul "Pitch" Molnar, chairman of ICAS's ACE Committee, ' with no additional pressures or influences from the crowd or other external factors. Don't allow the crowd to fly your aircraft......'" ...Blitz

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> I have been asked by several folks to post a list of new incoming parts on the list. The thinking behind it is that some of the parts are of limited numbers and by the time they get posted to CJ6.com they are all but gone. since most of us monitor the list daily many guys feel that it would be easier to just check out the list of incoming parts and then contact me off list. If there are no objections to this bit of spam here goes the first list. Another shipment is in the port clearing customs as we "speak". Seat pins, front and rear check valve springs check valve seals step cables (many guys are waiting for these) gear doors left and right # 7 pull rod (ail belcrank rod) Flap bungee Pop off valves emergency air bottle diverter valve-emergency diverter valve -flap hoses, many types, air and oil air intake assembly (Stainless steel carb air horns, air box, intake screen, baffle) Stainless steel carb heat horns (aka elephant ears) Not the old funky soft aluminum O rings of all actuator overhaul kits 0 rings and seals for main and nose gear overhaul kits main gear assembly complete, left and right canopy glass, Stock Chinese Remember please contact me OFF LIST if you have any questions. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Roger Doc Kemp" <viperdoc@mindspring.com> > From: <ByronMFox@aol.com> > Subject: Yak-List: Post OSH Formation Thoughts Blitz, Well said. There is a reason the AF brass frowns on the aviator that puts on an impromptu air show for his family. Many class A accidents are accredited to putting on an impromptu air show for the home drone or the family farm. We are all guilty of it at some time in our careers. The pressure to impress family, friends, and hometown folks has brought down many a great performer and military aviators. Just add that little something extra for the folks can reach up and bite us. Unfortunately, we that stay behind have to examine the errors made by our departed friends and put that in our clue bags to hopefully not make the same mistake. It sounds like a cold thing to do, but we have to compartmentalize our feelings and learn. The PK of the ground is still one! The best we will ever be able to do is equal it. I am not trying to point any fingers here, but we all have to examine our ways and techniques to survive in this arena of formation, aerobatic and airshow flying. This aint spam can flying nor is it military. We are paramilitary fliers without a flying safety program. Viperdoc

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Roger Doc Kemp" <viperdoc@mindspring.com> Subject: Humor of a maintainer. After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. For those of you with a W or TW, check the coiled air line that comes out of the compressor. Mine was rubbing on that little square cover on the electric fuel pump bolted to the firewall. luckily its steel and the pump shroud is aluminum so the wear was all on the cover and only the paint was worn off the steel air line. Great time at OSH this year. Everyone I talked to was most impressed with the Red Star formations in the airshow. (next year hopefully we will get lower). Aaron Marshall YAK 52TW N343DC

JGoolsby@umaryland.edu --> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com Troops and friends, Well I made it home about 1500 this afternoon. Had to do a little scud running though central Georgia, but visibility was good (>7) and I was quite comfortable the whole time. Few rain showers here and there but I never needed to stray more than a few miles from course. Earlier this morning I had to divert into CTJ because LGC was reporting 700' overcast and 5 miles vis. A quick check of the radar and a change of routing and I was on my way. I flew a total of 28.37 hours of which 16.78 was formation. 15.33 was cross country. On one airshow day we flew a 12 ship tight formation for 2.17 hours! The boys were so tired that they just sat in their cockpits after shut down. They were pooped! We got all kinds of compliments. Even the FAA weatherman during one of the daily show briefings, made a point of how great he thought "the CJs and Yak formations" were. Our RedStar troops did us proud and I had the distinct joy of leading them. The whole thing started out a sad note when we lost Roger Modglin out in Tulsa. Quite frankly I just couldn't get into the swing of things after that. He is missed. On Friday the 29th we flew a special missing man for Roger during the show. We couldn't go down low during the show, we did ours at our assigned altitude. We had a 12 ship in sort of an arrow shape. The center was the first flight in a diamond. At the call, Keith Harbor (#4) turned on his smoke and pull up and than out of the formation, heading west. The folks on the ground said it was beautiful. We also lost Dick James in his P-51 "Donna Might". I was leading a 14 ship formation in the show, when he didn't show up during the join up for his flight. Nothing was heard from him. The only witness said that he saw the ship dive into the ground. I didn't know James at all but the old time EAAWB folks knew him well and were really hurting. Most of us didn't even know he was missing until we got on the ground. Airboss found out where he was from a phone call from a farmer way to the SE of OSH. The folks at MTW put out the usual red carpet for us. And the EAA people there always had some one on hand to help out. And remember that scrawny little girl Vanessa? Well va va va vom!. Lets just say she's not scrawny any more. Well I am tired and have a lot of dirty stuff to wash. Nite all. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby
