Catching up on email...I know a lot of folks have waited for the SC to grow, this
is a great event reprinted from the event notice sent to me by Scott McMillian,
register online at the RPA website if you can make it!
Red Star Pilots Association
South Central Regional
Fly-In
September 21st-25th, 2005
Event Description
The 2005 South Central Regional is being held at the Lamar Municipal Airport. The
Lamar Municipal Airport is located approximately 3 miles west of the city of
Lamar, Colorado. The airport is centrally located within the South Central Region
and should provide a great environment for our event. The city of Lamar
and the Lamar Flying Service have opened their doors to the RPA and look forward
to many more RPA events.
Our host is a fellow RPA member Al Tinnes. Al is a Yak-50, Yak-52 and L-29 owner.
Al has imported many Yaks since they became available in the early 90s. Al
is a licensed A&P mechanic and has done extensive work on Yaks and CJs. Al has
generously offered his services in the event anyone happens to need an annual
condition inspection while in Lamar. Details about this service are available
by contacting AL directly at 719-688-5718.
The town of Lamar has some nice restaurants that will be hosting us for dinner.
The Cow Palace will be our home for the week. You can make reservation by calling
719-336-7753 and asking for the RedStar Pilot room rate. The discounted rate
will be $65/nt. You can share the room at no additional cost. Transportation
will be provided by Al, his family and staff at the airport so no rental cars
will be necessary. Your $75 registration will cover the cost of the event,
the awards dinner along with a BBQ dinner at the airport on Friday night. We will
have plenty of water and snacks to keep us going throughout the long days
of training.
The goal of this fly-in is to provide you with a variety of training along with
open formats to accommodate individual training needs. We will be providing a
FAST ground school, FAST Lead pilot ground school course, FAST flight training,
Tactical formation briefing and flight training,. We will also have available
a sanctioned aerobatic box that will be activated upon request. We have several
CFIs in the group that can provide basic spin training and BFR signoffs.
We are planning some friendly yet competitive flying events each afternoon to test
our skills as pilots. You can look forward to a Landing competition, Bombing
competition, and a Team Formation Demonstration Competition. Details of these
events will be covered during the daily briefing. Awards will be given to the
best individual in each event as well as an award for the best team score.
Arrival Information
Flying your Yak/CJ into Lamar is by far the preferred option. Lamar can be found on the Wichita Sectional. Lamar is in located in the South East corner of Colorado. The airport identifier is KLAA. AWOS frequency is 135.62. Unicom is 122.8. Field elevation is 3703 MSL. For more information visit the airport website at www.flylamar.com or call them at 719-336-7701. Discounted Fuel will be available for RPA members
If you plan to fly commercial the best option would be to arrive via Colorado Springs
or Denver International then drive. There is no commercial service to Lamar
and limited service to Pueblo. The drive time from Springs is about 2 hours
and about 3 hours from Denver.

OK just so all know that I truly respect my brother AKA "DAD." The
day that I can fly form as precisely and as well as he does I will be
one happy fella.
Besides I wouldn't even be flying my Yak if it wasn't for him,
another reason, amongst the many, I put him in high regard. My wife
on the other hand, now blames him for everything.

Barry,
Dust Off, is not a good term to use for those familiar with military terms.
Dust-Off, is used for emergency medical evacuation from a battlefield. The term
was a random call sign assigned to a medical evac in Vietnam. The Commander
of the medical evac squadron liked it so much that from then on all evacs were
called Dust-Off.
The unit commander, was himself killed attempting to evac wounded from the battlefield,
after refusing several orders from the ground commander to break off as the
LZ was too hot and could not be secured. All the commander would say is "not
without your wounded". After several attempts to land, he was shot down. A second
ship was dispatched to get the wounded.
Medical evacs suffered one of the highest causality rates during Vietnam, since
they would fly any weather, regardless of risk and would not return with out
the injured!
Sometimes fighter & Attack aircraft would break off due to risk, but not the
Dust-Offs!
Probably need to come up with an acronym name, something totally new. Besides
we need something that can be exported around the country and possibly the world
and fit these exercises.
The Military conducts a computer war-game to train future commanders called
Warfighter. I attended 8 of these in six years as Air Space Command and Control
(A2C2) NCO (Typically you would attend a Warfighter every 2 yrs, but they were
short of A2C2 NCO's, so I was always attending one. There was a 6 month ramp-up
to the exercise).
All fields involved in decision making, and support are involved. One team (Red)
is assigned to be the enemy, and use enemy tactics to fight the battle. They
plan there battle, from an occupying force. Then the Blue force plans an attack.
Both scenarios are entered into a computer (White Cell) and Probability of kill
ratios is used to decide the winner.
The exercise takes on a life of there own and blur reality with games. It really
feels like you are involved in a war. (20 hrs shifts, bad food, Act. . . .).
It felt more like war then the 14 combat missions that I flew in Iraq and Afghanistan,
in the C-130E.
(First landing at Bagdad int, a couple of weeks after the A320 was shot down
was the exception. We crossed the threshold at 280 Kts and 250 feet agl. Thought
we were going to have to do a go-around(second chance for a missle shot), but
the pilot put the aircraft down on the runway.
Changing the subject, I love where I live! Today leaving the bank, I heard a
jet fighter and looked up to see an FA-22 in a hard bank, with contrails coming
off the wing tips as it pulled in behind a KC-135 for a refuel.
In the morning if I look South, I can see the V-22 flying low level along the
ridgeline. The Sonic Booms of the Space Shuttle, The list goes on & On & On!

Hi Doug,
Would you happen to know if the Chinese fuel pump interchanges with the
Russian fuel pump? If you have one, what would be the price for the Chinese
fuel pump? Can you email me a couple of photos of one? I should be able to
tell by just looking at it if it will interchange. I have a customer with
a bad fuel pump and I've scrounged a diaphram from another pump to keep him
going.
Thanks a lot. Enjoy your day.
