And I forgot to mention in my tirade, How proud I was of our troops in the
area, and especially those sick ass helicopter guys and their rescue
swimmers who fly in machines which have way too many moving parts and have
rescued over 7000 people in a non-stop evacuation mission in the last 4 days
day and night, regardless of ground fire. I wish I had half the balls!!!!!!!
With Extreme Respect and Thanks

Ernie and to all
I have forward your email address to a friend who is trying to organize some
flights to pick up some victims of the hurricane so they can live with us.
There are several of us who are willing to have families live with us and
go pick them up in our aircraft.
Any info or if any one would like to join us would be welcome. My friend's
email address is gbubb@smitmc.co

I've been glued to my TV for 5 days now 20 hours a day. The images that I
have witnessed have made me shake my head to remind me that I'm not watching
news about Haiti, or Sudan, or Somalia, but our own damn country. I'm cant
stand it any more and have to do something.
We southern pilots have one comodity, knowledge, talent and a means to make
a difference. Even if we cant carry much in our CJ's and Yaks, a lot of us
own spam cans. I intend tomorrow to plead with my neigbors here in Fl, to
organize with their local Red Corss and Salvation Army chapters, to see if
we can at least be used as transpotrs of supplies to local staging points in
the affected areas. There are lots of folks here with spam cans that can
carry several hundred pounds of supply's to local airports that are not TFR
restricted to our flights. The Feds are clueless at this point, its up to us
to stand up to the plate. Lets get invloved, if only to inform others.
I appeal to all you guys out there to do the same. We can make a difference,
just ask your local Red Cross, Salvation Army or other community group where
you can pick up items needed by these most unfortunate folks. I dont have a
plan per se' but I know that we can all make a difference, use your
imagination!!!! If you do have more organzational skills than I than please
contribute to the group, this is no time to be a lurker!!!.
Sincerest Thanks

Earnie,
You are on line. I urge you and all others that want to contribute to go to
the AOPA website. The different URLS for the relief agencies like like Air
Care Alliance (www.aircareall.org), Air Evac (www.evac.org) and the Civil
Air Patrol (www.cap.org). Those are some of the best organizations to help
steer you in the direction you a hoping to go. Do nto try to reinvent the
wheel. Your frustration is felt by all involved, me included.

To farther add to this thread, in looking thru the air care alliance
website listing of volunteer organization I saw that there was a paultry
absence of Southeast US contributors. A challenge for the Red Star drivers
with spam cans living in the Southeast maybe??? This will not be the last
Hurrican we will see in our lifetimes. You know an ice cooler with critical
blood can fit in the seat pan of a YAK or CJ. Just a thought. I have a
bigger fish to fry this weekend with deploying the Al 117th ANG EMEDS to
Gulfport in the AM. The 187th is already down there. Will be glad to
provide as much assistance I can to the relief effort as I can.
How about a Red Star Docs relief alliance?
Another thing, you can clean out your over stuffed closests of those cloths
and shoes you keep saying you are going to lose weight and get back into.
Donate them to the Salvation Army, Red Cross, YOUR Church, The Goodwill
Industries or any other relief agency that is sending supplies directly to
the Gulfcoast victims. They have lost everything. We can all afford to go
to the Wall Mart an by a set of child's underware or panties, socks, ect to
donate. I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but I 'm not to partial to
wearing someone else's donated holely underware. But if that's all ya got
to give, atleast wash 'em first. Besides, it is tax deductible if you get
a reciept for the above agencies. If you are flying for these relief
agencies, that too is tax deductible. Not to sound greedy, but it does help
to defray the operating cost you will incure.

Guys and Gals,

This site will give you the current update on what Angel Flight is doing
for disaster relief. Your help would be appreciated.
Angel Flight America (the umbrella group for all the regional Angel
Flight orgs) and the regional AF orgs this year implemented a program
called HSEATS =96 the Homeland Security Emergency Air Transport System.
HSEATS prequalifies AF pilots to set them up to respond in emergencies.
Pilots who choose to participate set their own response availability,
and volunteer to carry people, cargo, blood, dogs, etc. as needed in an
emergency. As a general rule AF orgs allow people to only be carried
in certificated airplanes, but cargo and anything else can be carried in
experimental aircraft.
Check with your local AF org (you can find them on the internet).

Chairman, Board of Directors,
Angel Flight West (13 Western States, 2,050 pilots plus Alaska Air and
Frontier, approx. 5,000 missions this year, a great group of people!)

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net>
Yakkers;
In looking at some of the photos that Herb posted I notice most YAKS
have the Plexiglas center divider between the front and rear cockpits.
My 52 never had one from the day I got it so I'm not sure what benefit
it has. I'm wondering why it's there? On my 52 without the divider,
airflow comes from the rear cockpit and moves forward. If the rear
cockpit window is placed in the second detent then the occupant gets
blasted with air at a high enough pressure that it soon becomes
annoying. Does that happen with the divider in place?
Thanks in advance.

Frank,
I do not know either. I do not have one either. I have flown a YAK with the
divider and really did not see a difference. As I remember though, the rear
canopy was closed.
