Why not step up to a 360 hp M-14? Then your CJ can walk away from a 52 in
straight line dash or a dive.

What are you smoking Doc? A stock 285 CJ smokes a 52 in straight and level
flight.

Don't pull any G's in a CJ6 or the pilot greys out at 3G's......You can run
from a Yak 52 but you can not hide or out turn them. (now that hurts but
true...) Ever out run a Yak 50 lately? Don't think so.
Something to think about.

Does anybody have a complete intact working fuel gauge for a Yak-55 they'd
be willing to part with. I'm referring to the entire assembled unit
including the flange that bolts into the upper wing of the Yak-55 which
contains the visual gauge and clear plastic lens. If so, please contact me
off list.
Thanks,

My friend Brian Sanders had fun with me after I hit a duck with my
-52. He said, "It's too the duck wasn't flying away from you. If it was,
you'd never had hit it." My friend, Brian Sanders!
I did an air show recently for my QB hanger while Brian was putting
time on a newly restored TMk-20. After my bit, he made a pass on the guys
at 380 knots! How does one spell scalded dog!!! All the guys could talk
about was Brian's pass. You CJ guys ought to keep in mind how fast, fast
really is. Boys, it ain't about the speed of our machines, but the fun of
them, No?
Unlimited Gold Race at Reno this year. Yes, scalded dog can fly.

OK, Fights On, Fights On...Knives and Guns in the phone both...no valid BVR
or Heater Kills. Only Guns kills with permenant kill removal... no
regeneration from the penalty box and KO calls after 360 deg. turn for DLO.
Set Floor at 2000' so the CJ's can recover from inadvertant out of conrtrol
situations when they try to break and turn with the YAKs.

Gentlemen:
Just a small slice of personal history about the last great hurricane in New
Orleans, Betsy.
Should you have no interest in this, don't waste your time and just hit
DELTE.
In 1965 I was in my second year of residency at Charity Hospital. Was
married with a six month old daughter, and a son of a year and a half. Had been
working at WSMB, 1350 AM, in New Orleans for five years. I had the "drive
time" shift 4-8 P.M.
All knew that Betsy was a strong Cat. III storm, and the City claimed to be
totally prepared for the storm. In fact, the City had just completed a
totally self contained "Civil Defense" headquarters. Anyone remember that yellow
and black signs that designated the shelters that we would use in case of an
atomic attack. They were supposed to be stocked with water and food so that
we could remain save until the "all clear" was sounded.
The New Orleans brand new center was three stories deep. Built of concrete
and had generators, water, food, beds, etc. for all City and Parish elected
officials.
I had no choice, since I was on the air, but most of the station staff had
remained, since our studio was on the top floor of the Maison Blanche building
which is on Canal Street and takes up and entire square block.
The only official information that I had came from the Civil Defense
enclave. As the storm grew closed, it appeared that the Northeast quadrant would
strike the eastern section of New Orleans. They were concerned with the surge
from the river and the lake. I was advising residents of that area to
evacuate their homes.
After several hours into the storm, I had a call from the Mayor. He was
frantic! In their snug Civil Defense headquarters, the above ground antennae
had blown down, and they were totally isolated. He asked me what was going on
outside. I could not leave the control room, but I asked another announcer
to look out of the window on Canal Street. He said that cars and trucks were
bouncing down Canal like toys and that all of the merchandise was being
sucked out of the stores.
WSMB was now the only radio station still on the air. Our transmitter and
three 1,000 foot antennae was across the river in Algiers and still intact.
Anyone remember those two little triangles on all of our radio dials that were
DESINGATED EMERGENCY stations.
Well friends, that part didn't work either.
Now the power went out, and the underground utilities in central New Orleans
failed too. Had no contact with the underground politicians. One of the
ladies at the station found some candles, and we put them on top of the control
board so that I had some light.
Remember that my young wife and two children were alone in the apartment
complex that I managed in the western part of town (second job). This gave us
a
free place to live. It was just off Veterans Hwy. in Jefferson Parish. The
owner was the number one Mafia guy in town, Carlos Marcello.
Meanwhile, all that I could do was to repeat the last information that I had
from the Mayor. The frustration was tremendous. Would the people who had a
portable radios comply with the evacuation? Was my own family safe? How
much longer would we remain on the air?
Around 8 P.M. our antennae went down, and now the town was totally cut off
from any information.
Our building was swaying and creaking and the women began to sob and cry.
We only had the one window to watch the destruction and vent some of the heat
buildup. It was a long and anxiety filled night.
The following morning I made it back to our apartment building, or what was
left of it. Built in the shape of a figure eight, with pools on both sides.
The roofs were gone and sitting in the pools. The second floor apartments
had nothing inside. The wind had sucked out everything when the roofs lifted
off. Our apartment was one of the only one's that was basically intact.
Being on the first floor and protected by the center of the eight.
Aftermath. No electric, no water; no food; no fuel; nothing could get in
our out of town for almost three weeks. We had a gas stove, so we cooked for
everyone. The stores were empty by the third day.
This was before the Interstate system. US 90 was washed out, as were the
railroad bridges and tracks. Everyone helped each other in miserable
conditions.
Most of the people in the eastern sections had evacuated to higher ground.
About one hundred had drowned in their attics. The levees held, but the
surge pushed the water over the levees. The City had to bull doze holes in the
levees to allow the water to get out. Since then, I understand that they have
installed more pumps, and raised the height of the levees.
There was no FEMA, the National Guard could not get into the City. No
helicopters or HumV's. No looting and violence. No free food, water, or money.
Just people helping each other.
I know that this storm was much worse, and caused tremendous harm and
damage. I just simply don't understand why the people have changed so much, and
why we all seem to look to government to solve all of our problems for us.
BTW, President Johnson sent me a "thank you" letter from the White House
later. Big Deal!
I sincerely hope that New Orleans can recover from this tragedy. I is a
wonderful and very special place.
Best To All,
Ray Gage

OK, I'm thinking. Turn radius is a function of two things: TAS and G's. Two
airplanes having the same TAS and pulling the same G's are going to make the
same size circle. It doesn't matter what kind of airplane they are.
Now the ability to sustain a turn is a function of how fast the airframe
bleeds energy and how fast the engine or altitude puts it back (actually, when
you are descending you are losing energy too -- energy of potential).
The Yak-52 bleeds energy faster than the CJ6A does. Now it has more HP to put
energy back relative to a stock CJ6A but not relative to an M14-powered CJ6A.
It isn't clear that the Yak-52 is an advantage over a stock CJ6A but it is
pretty clear that the M14-powered CJ6A has an energy advantage over a Yak-52
under almost all conditions. (I can't think of any situation where the Yak-52
has an energy advantage in a straight ahead hassle but I don't want to be
absolute as someone will probably think of a situation.)
So what advantage does the Yak-52 have over the CJ6A? Due to its 7G load limit
vs. the CJ6As 6G load limit it has a higher instantaneous rate of turn. Given
that the Yak-52 almost always starts slower than the CJ6A it will be turning
inside -- initially. But the CJ6A can manage energy better. The CJ driver just
goes vertical and trades kinetic energy for potential. TAS drops so turn
radius drops. Now the CJ driver has the turn radius AND the energy advantage.
In a knife fight whoever has the airplane that bleeds energy more slowly or
can sustain energy in a turn is likely to end up the winner. Best solution for
the Yak-52 drivers? Shoot the CJ6A guy in the back when he isn't looking and
get out of Dodge. That seems to have worked reasonably well for Erich Hartmann
and some of the other guys flying behind the black crosses.
In the end, the only thing that matters is who's dead and who's not.

People are always asking for some sort of comparison between my CJ and my

times the gas of the CJ... and while it might be more fun, it's not 10

Hmmm, regarding the Yak 50 or -52, I'm thinking that talk and keyboard bull is

Gentlemen,
I am looking for a working Russian Briz model radio. This is the one piece
unit found in the later YAK-50's and also in various other models such as
early Sukhoi 26M's etc.
I am also looking for models that are either just not working "right" or are
total basket cases.
Please contact me off-list if you have one, or can point me in the right
direction.

Yak List
I have a Pitts Model 12 (M14P Powered) for sale.
The aircraft has flown 25 hours and I have enjoyed every second. First
flight was July 2005.
I am an A/P and IA and run a maintenance facility specializing in
aerobatic aircraft.
See www.inverted.us <http://www.iverted.us/> for details under aircraft
for sale.
The aircraft performance is STELLAR.
Thanks,
Jason Newburg

Come to REDSTAR in May 2006 and you can pick from the 9-12 Yak 50's to race.
All are on the faster West Coast at sea level. Some can even go 5 hours at top
speed even.....at 140+ knots.

Hmmm, regarding the Yak 50 or -52, I'm thinking that talk and keyboard bull is
easier than the flying. Where all the Yak-50 Hot Dogs when I issue my annual
race challenge? Oh, it gets so quiet then.

Well, I'm just some some transplanted yankee, situated here in some god
loveley aviatin freindly, place to own warbirds..... And I thought I would
just venture to say that It dont give a rats ass about how fast your machine
can go, or how big your male member may be but how big your heart is in such
situations as we seem to have found ourselves lately.
All fighter pilot lingo aside ( most of which I dont understand) how about a
concerted effort to help the folks in need!! I am willing to be a focal
point. I figured, we could make humanitarian flights with our ships to the
affected areas. I already have the one woman who flew solo around the world,
volunterring her back seat, who else among you is ready to make hstory?
We all have the opportunity to help here no matter how small the
contributiotion.

But Earnie, are you still not pouring $ bills in the intake and converting
them to thrusties. JP4 still cost a min of $4.00 @ 150 gal/hr fuel burn. I
just figured I could fly my YAK -52 about 10 hours for every hour I would
have paid to fly the L-39. The nail in the coffin came when I figured the
cost to fly out to Laughlin and back to MGM. I could have bought (then 3
months ago) 15 round trip discount tickets on Southworst.
As an ol fart though, I'm still lucky. Get to fly my YAK for grins and the
Guard still pays me FTP's to play with the Vipers too. Life is good, even
as an OL' FART.

Earnie,
I have a spam can and plan to do a sortie to Ocean Springs, Ms . 1. To make
visit my guys in the 187th EMEDS that deployed from MGM this past Thurs and
2. go over to GPT after that to see the 117th EMEDS from BHM. I plan on
taking them a care package of the simple things in life like TP, tooth
paste, insect repellant, and baby wipes. If your are planning on going in
there (that area in general) make sure you coordinate with FSS. The FAA has
taken back over the ATC fxn from OMAH45. Keep your head on a swivel, there
those strange heavier than air things with way to many moving parts to
safely convey my rosey pink ass through the air. Anything that is so ugly
the mother earth repells so it can fly. But yeh, where would we be right
now without them.Their's is a whale of a mission! Those aircrew are doing
Yoman's duty.
