, etc ) , all being active pilots . Harvey Meek has flown over
2 500 hours on military fighter & jet aircraft , being now Captain on
B 747 . David Monroe has over 20 000 total flight hours , being
now Captain on B 767 . Paul Hornick having over 5 000 hours , being
now Captain on Airbus 300 . All pilots are flying YAK 52
from many years ago , the " tail dragger " YAK 52 TW version being very well

I see 2 fairly simple fixes to this problem. Bottled gas just adds
complexity and inconvenience to the whole issue.
* Exhaust extensions as most of the aerostars use
http://www.yakuk.com/img/Aerostars_cross.jpg and
http://www.yakuk.com/img/aerostars16.jpg show these extensions.
* A NACA duct mounted top left side of fuselage about on the corner
position of the instrument panel to feed fresh air to a normal aircrew mask.
We currently have fresh air vents (ram) in the fuselage in that position
good cool breathing air!!
You will note that the right side Y52 exhaust is already longer, this was an
effort I believe the OEM made to keep gas out of the wing oil cooler intake
and then up into the fuselage.
Best regards, fly safe-Mark Jefferies

Option 1. Lead flight suit.
Great but restricts movement, puts the plane over max and makes the pilot
madder than a mad hatter from Mad town.
Option 2. Replace the instruments.
Remove the instruments and place them on the shelf in your hanger. Fit new
non-magic-moon-beam units that way you will only be at risk when in the
hanger. Best way to reduce this exposure is to remove the aircraft from the
hanger and go fly.
Option 3. Mutate and become a super hero.
This option, while unlikely, will give you the power of independent flight
thus removing the need for an aircraft altogether. And who stands a chance
of kicking your ass in ACM when you have laser vision.
In short, no.

Funny how just a year ago we, as a community, were so worried about
radiation poisoning that we talked for hours about the best way to solve
this potential severe problem. Now we are going through the same discussion
about CO in the cockpit. Funny that's all.
Did anyone ever come with a real conclusion to the radiation issue?

I was hoping more of being able to pull 100G in a turn. That should shut up
the Yak-50 guys.
And how powerful is that LASER vision thing? How long would I have to hold my
stare to get a hit? Not good for keeping track of the other bad guys. "Lose
sight, lose the fight."

Just checked my stainless slip joint CJ exhaust using the
vacuum for air. Out of six joints three were bubbles with soap , two
with major leaks felt by hand, one tight. None of the nuts leaked .
A CJ on the field with a chinese exhaust was two major leaks, two
bubbles. We had a new clamp for his but it bubbled too. Only thing
that stopped the leaks was very old fashion and ugly. Used exhaust
thermo tec tape available from summit racing. Most of the joints
leaked only part way around the circle. This tape is as thick as a
belt. I wrapped it twice around with the end butt away from the known
leak. Used muffler clamps firmly hold both ends. Same thing worked on
the Chinese exhaust. I have only done one joint as a test to see if
it lasts and has enough give. If it works long term then will order
stainless muffler clamps. I have had this tape on a car exhaust
header for 7 years.
I would like to extend the exhaust by about a foot by
adding a new lower section if Kimball could come up with it. Lots
more drag and ugly but the only long term solution

Slip joints will leak if tested with a vacuum as stated. Run the engine to
warm it up well then try the same test. Bet you won't find the leaks then.
The slip joints work because the inner pipe runs warmer than the outer pipe
and expands more.

Because the CJ runs on 70 octane white gas in China, I routinely ran my CJ's
285 Housai on 87 octane unleaded auto with an occassional tank of 100LL.
Dutifullly, however, when ethanol was added to California fuels, I stopped because
"ethanol will eat your seals and hoses."
Today, 100LL is $4.45/gal at the local aerodrome, while 87 octane unleaded is
$2.89 down the street. It would seem now reasonable to explore the cost of
making my CJ's fuel system ethanol friendly. Capturing the $1.55 spread would
soon offset any reasonable modification. What say you knowleglable folks out
there? Thanks, Blitz
