Also, is it mandatory that the ethanol content of gas be posted at the
pump, or is it possible to be pumping ethanol into your system without
knowing it?

Subject: | M14P Family Engines in Russia |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Richard Goode" <richard.goode@russianaeros.com>
Following a recent trip to Russia, I have prepared a report including photographs
of the current position with the Voronezh Mechanical Plant, and Vedeneyev Design
Bureau (the current two manufacturers of the M14 family of engines in Russia).
The good news is that VMP is going to restart engine production, and indeed has
produced enough components for approximately fifty engines. Certainly I saw
more than enough evidence of this - although there is a problem for out-sourced
components, principally magnetos and carburettors.
The bad news is that prices will be very significantly more expensive than those
that people have been fortunate enough to pay over the last 10 years!

I spent sometime with YDB in Moscow last week:
The Yak-54 manufacture has always been problematic because it has been at the troubled
Saratov Plant, and financial problems there prevented larger scale production
of the aircraft.
However it is being moved to the much more successful and dynamic Arsenyev factory
in the Russian far-east, where all Yak-50/55 were made, and indeed many Kamov
helicopters are still being made. An initial batch of ten aircraft are being
laid down, and depending on the sales of these, more will follow. Should
anyone be interested, please let us know.
The new Yak-152 is well into its design phase (please contact us if you would like
a picture). Although the Sukhoi 49 seemingly won the Air Force contract,
inside sources in the Russian Air Force are much keener on the Yak-152 with all-metal
construction; simpler maintenance etc. It strikes me as a rather fine
aircraft for the private pilot! Certainly civil versions will be built - brief
details are:
VNE 500 kilometres p/h
Max cruise 350 kilometres p/h
+9/-7G
1000 kilometres range
Take off 175 metres
Land 360 metres
Anyone interested?

Before you assume that all mogas contains alcohol test the fuel in question.
An alcohol tester is really easy to make. All you need is a long, relatively
thin glass container. The long, thin jar used for martini olives works great.
To make the tester take the empty jar and mark a line around it about 1" from
the bottom. Mark another line about 1" from the top. Your tester is complete.
To use the tester, fill the jar with water up to the lower mark. Add gasoline
to fill it to the top mark. Cap the jar and shake vigorously. When the fuel
and water settle and separate look at the lower line. If the separating line
is still at the lower mark, the gasoline has no alcohol in it. If the
separating line is lower, i.e. some of the water has disappeared, then the
fuel contains alcohol.
This works because alcohol is hygroscopic (binds with water). It actually
takes some of the water and binds it to the fuel.
BTW, Blitz, we are paying $3.56 at Cameron Park. Fly over here for fuel. I
also have access to a CJ I can fly now so lets go do some form and maybe
hassle. I need to get my FAST card back.

Here is California they put a generic notice on the pump that the fuel *MAY*
contain oxygenates like alcohol or MTBE. That doesn't mean they actually do.
The only way to know for sure is for the distributor to tell you or to test
for it.

I am living in Folsom and working in West Sac. My Aztec is living at Cameron
Park. My project is still in Randy Thorne's shop sans engine and prop. Still
no money from Sean Carroll in spite of his promise to pay last Friday so the
Project continues to languish.
Dennis Nickson has given me carte blanche to fly his CJ so long as I keep the
fuel and oil topped up.

That sucks dude. I don't see there being a good way to easily convert to
making the aircraft safe for fuels containing alcohol. Alcohol is pretty nasty
stuff.

I am forwarding a message which I got yesterday from the mechanics on the
Russian national team. The discovered severe structural problems with the
Yak 54 after just 300 hrs service please see below.
"I just received e-mail form Russian Advanced Team. They discovered serious
problem with Yak-54. See attached illustration. After just 300 hours all
rivets marked with red cross was gone and all bolts marked with red cross
was turned off on 1-2 turns.
Could you please, warn about this problem all Yak-54's owners which you
know."
Basically about 20 rivets around the main spar were "MISSING" and others
were deformed. Please pass this on to anyone with a 54. I have a graphic
which describes the problem if anyone needs it.

I believe there at least two fresh air sources for the CJ cockpit.
1. Already existing intakes at the louvers (two) - one for the generator and
one for the air compressor.
2. A intake installed on the cowling.
These two area are free from any exhaust gases and heated air.
The area forward of the louvers is aerodynamically very high pressure and
clean.
The air directly behind the louvers may be getting some engine case gases
from the breather. Air flow from the louvers to behind the baffles is not
effectively straight though, but quite turbulent (Have you tried to track down
an
oil leak up there?). So air in front of the louvers should be OK.
The area around the cowling will have high velocity clean air. This air is
separated from the engine compartment by the air tight cowling and remains
clean until it mixes with air exiting the cowl cheeks. So any place forward of
the cooling air outlets should be a clean source.
In source #1 the ram air for the generator could be utilized (particularly
if one had installed an alternator) - not so for the compressor.
An enlarged sealed duck, could be made to run from the louvers, between the
cylinders - behind the baffles - some air could be taped off for the generator
cooling, the rest rooted to the firewall. Both the first and second
firewall would need to be drilled out so the ducking could run straight though
to
the forward cockpit. Although I'd like to have the new ducking make of
aluminum, I believe it could be made of fiber glass.
The 2nd source would require constructing an intake (NASA flush or
protrusion type) on the cowling. Sealed flexible ducking would than run to the
first
firewall.
The draw back with this is having to deal with the ducking each time the
cowling is opened AND the looks - plus the complexity of building the intake
(metal work, riveting , paint, ect.)
I believe I will attempted to utilized the first KISS condition.
Before that I will attempt to redo and replace the seals on the rear cockpit.
Plus I will vent the rear fuselage by putting small louvers on some access
doors.
I hope to buy one of those CO testers, to back findings. Ideas on the best
cheap one to buy?
