Anyone interested in a Yak 50, zero time overhaul (airframe, engine and
propeller), 360 or 400 HP, with long range fuel tanks (roughly 4hrs. 30
min), I have two available; a 1980 and 1982 model. Both have less than 100
hours total time since new. Please contact me off-list.

I've got this information form Anatolij Belov. he is one of the best
Russian pilots in the Advanced category.
See result of the Europe Advanced Championship in Hradec Kralov this year:
http://civa.mwebservices.net/WebServer/AEAC2005/OnLine/default.htm
He told me that this problem happened not in Russian Championship (in
Kaluga), but just before AEAC-2005. Also he told me that according to the
guys from Yakovlev design bureau this problem might happen after 1000 flight
hours. But in reality it happened after 300 flight hours.
Also he told me that this problem was well known by the Yakovlev guys and
they fixed it in some Yak-54s in France, but they did not tell the Russian
team about it, maybe because team's Yak-54 was new. But once again: it
happened after 300 hours.
There is a factory modification to apparently solve this so if you have one
or know someone who does please pass it along.
Also it would be a good idea to check the hinge that connects the ailerons
to the flap selection mechanism as this was the cause of in in flight
failure that resulted in total loss of control. A bulletin has been issued
for this problem but I am not sure how widely published it has been.
This, of course, raises an interesting question. What mechanism exists for
the factory (Russia or China) to communicate bulletins to customers. When I
flew a Yak 52 I new all the bulletins that were out there. I did not know
any new ones that came up unless I happened to find out about them via word
of mouth. Equally when we discover problems we should be feeding this
information back to the factory as it is invaluable to them. For Yaks 52s
and Cjs Red star obviously has a role to play here as well as you big
dealers. I know that Mark Jefferies has done a good job of posting known
bulletins in the past. When members of this list become aware of issues like
this it is almost a moral requirement to publish widely to get the word out
there. I am not suggesting AT ALL getting the feds involved but a central
clearing house for recurrent issues would be of use to us and the makers of
our wonderful birds.
To this end I am willing and able to create a web forum for ONLY maintenance
issues with a once per month collection of items posted to be sent to this
list and any othe locations that would help spread the word. It would be
available to pilots and makers alike it would allow us to monitor trends and
get the word out about serious issues.
Please open up a discussion on this if there is no interest I will not
bother and go off and do something more interesting but if you guys see a
need I will be happy to do it.

Ok so I was bored today so here you go please feel free to start filling in
issues that you have seen with your aircraft. I have also added a shoot the
s*&t section in case you need that place to discuss religion, politics or
god forbid the weather.
I will get the ability to load pictures running this evening. I have allowed
guest browsing please contribute. Ass I have said I will round up new posts
and send them to this and other lists once in a while. The idea is to record
issues in one place.

Sorry but I forgot to mention the advantage to registering is that you can
get automatic notifications on just the subjects that are of interest to you
in my case I get emails when new items are posted to M14P and Interavia
Technoavia as well as MTV-3.
If you don't register you will get no notifications as I don't know your
interested.

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net>
Gus
The Russian and Chinese aircraft Maintenance BBS
(http://www.notasukhoi.com/yabbse/index.php) is the kind of forum that has
been so vehemently rejected by YAK-LIST participants in the past. RedStars
tried to create the same kind of BBS. I think their success has faltered
because of the "CATEGORY" selections they put forth. In other words, it's
"do or die" important as a BBS creator in choosing the right categories for
user's to post to.... too many categories divides the group and the BBS will
subsequently fail......guaranteed! The success of the YAK-LIST resides in
the fact that all posts are seen by all!
Too many categories on your BBS and in a sense you're fracturing the group.
The BBS creator must resist the urge to over categorize.... the SMALLER the
number of categories the better!!
I have attempted to spur and promote the success of RedStarsBBS with a link
to their forum on http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver but I see it is
still languishing with few participants.
Humor me for a moment and allow me to illustrate the following example....
On your BBS you have chosen the following categories....
1. M14P Issues regarding M14P engines in all the HP configurations.
Moderator: Gus Fraser
2. Housai 285HP Discussions of the basic Chinese engine. Moderator: Gus
Fraser
3. Ivchenko AI-25-TL Engine as fitted to the L-39. Moderator: Gus Fraser
4. Airframe specific issues. Yak 52 & 50 airframe and systems specific
issues. Moderator: Gus Fraser
5. CJ airframe issues: Moderator: Gus Fraser
6. Yak 55, 55M & 54: Issues of the very aerobatic Yak types. Moderator: Gus
Fraser
7. L-39/29: L-39/29 tech issues: Moderator: Gus Fraser 0 N/A
8. Interavia/Technoavia issues: SP-91 I-3 E-3 tech issues. Moderator: Gus
Fraser
7. Sukhoi issues: Issues pertaining to SU-xx types: Please start subject by
type designation. Moderator: Gus Fraser.

For one, I personally, don't want to have to search thru all this horseshit
to get usefull and good information. The better way to do it is to have one
category link...say "YAK AIRCRAFT" and then let the people who post choose
the subject of the heading instead of you choosing to "categorize them" like
with above categories. It's kind of like downloading your email for the day
and looking at the subject headings. If it interests you, you open the
email...if it don't you delete it or pass it by. That way a person who
clicks on your BBS link is offered up a selection of posts with headings
created by the person who has posted......not the narrowly defined
catregories created by the BBS creator. You might even make post forwarding
a part of the BBS...just like the YAK-LIST. Each post would thus generate an
email to all BBS participants with emphasis on the "SUBJECT" heading of ther
post.
I have witnessed the birth and death of quite a few of these BBS's. The real
value of these type BBS's is that posts are maintained in an online,
searchable database. A list server like the YAK-LIST does the same thing
but, alas, it's more difficult to navigate their historical database because
the searched links are based on a pattern of email responses rather than a
grouping or categorization as to subject material or heading. In other
words, a BBS is much better for our type of forum. Only problem is getting
current YAK-LIST participants to accept a better way of doing things. Some
people are just set in their ways. It's hard to beat the simplicity of
openning your email program and being presented with the posts of the day!
Another word.... If you are going to maintain a database of maintenance
issues you need to provide some kind of mechanism for uploading pictures to
the BBS. For example, I have a number of items that might go in what you
would categorize as the "Maintenance" or "Airworthyness" category (but
please, don't create these categories...keep it simple...let the posters do
it!). But any maintenece or airwothyness posts would loose their impact,
appeal and usefulness without pictures detailing whatever mod or observation
that has been made.
Good luck.

PS...I'll be linking your site http://www.notasukhoi.com/yabbse/index.php on
the Yak Links Page at http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver. It's not much,
I know, but maybe it might help to get your site moving. I think it will be
of benefit to the YAK community if it takes off.

Has anyone been able to duplicate the Chinese empty weight CofG with the M14 conversion
on the CJ.
Without adding huge amounts of ballast in the tail cone?
