--> Yak-List message posted by: "Fraser, Gus" <gus.fraser@gs.com> My point still stands how would people have known about this issue with the Yak 54, as an example. This issue is almost 12 months old. Please don't tell me that we wait until we loose an aircraft and maybe a pilot ! This is a conscience thing. I will maintain the list as I find out about things If someone then goes and makes a big smoking hole in the ground so be it I tried to do my part. I will , stupidly, by your description, continue in my fruitless task. In fact you can upload images give me a break I put it up in two hours yesterday. When I get a mind to I will collect recent items of substance and post them back here, as I have said. That way the old stick in the muds can still benefit from the information. As for the different categories, that is what the suggestions is for. Really owning one of these aircraft and trying to help the 'community' is sometimes worse than having your teeth pulled, ever see that film Grumpy old men ?. Sometimes I think that I should just go and buy an Extra but then I start the engine and it all makes sense. BTW my SP-91 is at the Nationals in Texas, BTW it is also for sale :) . My coach is flying in advanced so best of luck to him. Gus -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Frank Haertlein Subject: Yak-List: Russian and Chinese aircraft Maintenance BBS --> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" --> <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Gus The Russian and Chinese aircraft Maintenance BBS (http://www.notasukhoi.com/yabbse/index.php) is the kind of forum that has been so vehemently rejected by YAK-LIST participants in the past. RedStars tried to create the same kind of BBS. I think their success has faltered because of the "CATEGORY" selections they put forth. In other words, it's "do or die" important as a BBS creator in choosing the right categories for user's to post to.... too many categories divides the group and the BBS will subsequently fail......guaranteed! The success of the YAK-LIST resides in the fact that all posts are seen by all! Too many categories on your BBS and in a sense you're fracturing the group. The BBS creator must resist the urge to over categorize.... the SMALLER the number of categories the better!! I have attempted to spur and promote the success of RedStarsBBS with a link to their forum on http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver but I see it is still languishing with few participants. Humor me for a moment and allow me to illustrate the following example.... On your BBS you have chosen the following categories.... 1. M14P Issues regarding M14P engines in all the HP configurations. Moderator: Gus Fraser 2. Housai 285HP Discussions of the basic Chinese engine. Moderator: Gus Fraser 3. Ivchenko AI-25-TL Engine as fitted to the L-39. Moderator: Gus Fraser 4. Airframe specific issues. Yak 52 & 50 airframe and systems specific issues. Moderator: Gus Fraser 5. CJ airframe issues: Moderator: Gus Fraser 6. Yak 55, 55M & 54: Issues of the very aerobatic Yak types. Moderator: Gus Fraser 7. L-39/29: L-39/29 tech issues: Moderator: Gus Fraser 0 N/A 8. Interavia/Technoavia issues: SP-91 I-3 E-3 tech issues. Moderator: Gus Fraser 7. Sukhoi issues: Issues pertaining to SU-xx types: Please start subject by type designation. Moderator: Gus Fraser. 8. Propellers: RUSSIAN V530TA-D35 PROPELLER. Moderator: Gus Fraser 9. What would you like to see. Moderator: Gus Fraser 10. Shoot the Sh!t. Totally anything you like no restrictions. Moderator: Gus Fraser For one, I personally, don't want to have to search thru all this horseshit to get usefull and good information. The better way to do it is to have one category link...say "YAK AIRCRAFT" and then let the people who post choose the subject of the heading instead of you choosing to "categorize them" like with above categories. It's kind of like downloading your email for the day and looking at the subject headings. If it interests you, you open the email...if it don't you delete it or pass it by. That way a person who clicks on your BBS link is offered up a selection of posts with headings created by the person who has posted......not the narrowly defined catregories created by the BBS creator. You might even make post forwarding a part of the BBS...just like the YAK-LIST. Each post would thus generate an email to all BBS participants with emphasis on the "SUBJECT" heading of ther post. I have witnessed the birth and death of quite a few of these BBS's. The real value of these type BBS's is that posts are maintained in an online, searchable database. A list server like the YAK-LIST does the same thing but, alas, it's more difficult to navigate their historical database because the searched links are based on a pattern of email responses rather than a grouping or categorization as to subject material or heading. In other words, a BBS is much better for our type of forum. Only problem is getting current YAK-LIST participants to accept a better way of doing things. Some people are just set in their ways. It's hard to beat the simplicity of openning your email program and being presented with the posts of the day! Another word.... If you are going to maintain a database of maintenance issues you need to provide some kind of mechanism for uploading pictures to the BBS. For example, I have a number of items that might go in what you would categorize as the "Maintenance" or "Airworthyness" category (but please, don't create these categories...keep it simple...let the posters do it!). But any maintenece or airwothyness posts would loose their impact, appeal and usefulness without pictures detailing whatever mod or observation that has been made. Good luck. Frank YAK52 N9110M L71 PS...I'll be linking your site http://www.notasukhoi.com/yabbse/index.php on the Yak Links Page at http://home.earthlink.net/~yak52driver. It's not much, I know, but maybe it might help to get your site moving. I think it will be of benefit to the YAK community if it takes off.

Eastern Daylight Time, joeh@shaw.ca writes: --> Yak-List message posted by: JOE <joeh@shaw.ca> Has anyone been able to duplicate the Chinese empty weight CofG with the M14 conversion on the CJ. Without adding huge amounts of ballast in the tail cone? Joe ++++++++++++++++ Joe, This is pretty difficult to do. The M-14 is 70lbs heavier I believe. If you have removed all those Chinese radios from behind the back seat (that was 186 lbs in my case) this is where your major shift of weight came. You can reduce the amount of ballast you need by switching over to an B&C alternator. Some guys have made major alteration by moving the battery farther back. Not a KISS solution for some. Some have stuck in another air bottle for back up. I have my ballast (lead BB shot) in a bag in the tail cone. This allows easy adjustments when I remove stuff up front. I realized a increase in payload of about 133 lbs even with my ballast in. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby

Right now perhaps the 205-215 mph category with a 360. However: the CJ (and Yak 50?) could do that on the short Formula 1 course. That could be more entertaining than watching T-6's drive around their 6 mile course. Watching them reminds me of the Walt Disney sequence "Waltz of the Hippos". One problem we can't beat: Yaks/CJ's don't make enough noise to be crowd pleasers. Craig Payne

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Richard Goode" <richard.goode@russianaeros.com> I think Gus Fraser is taking a valuable stand. The real problem is to differentiate between safety related 'ideas' (often good) that people have, and formal factory Service Bulletins. Obviously for aircraft they consider obsolete like Yak-50/52/55, Yakovlev are not (I believe) issuing more Service Bulletins. On the other hand the Yak-54 is a fully certificated aircraft to Western norms. As such Yakovlev have a formal responsibility to issue Service Bulletins. To this end I have written to Dimitry Dratch to ask him what he is doing about this, and what he is doing to make sure this is propagated in the West. I can say that we have a similar problem with Sukhoi, who discuss technical problems, but by and large don't issue Service Bulletins.
