Both would get stuck in the out position after 1 - 2 pumps. Engine would not start with insufficient fuel After blowing 2 gaskets inside the primer pump/handle itself, the problem was found by the mechanics in the nozzle at the engine intake. Carbon buildup closed the nozzle blocking fuel flow. After removal and cleaning engine received fuel to start. BUT now 2 gaskets need replacing (smile). Said to have been from long taxiing at low power settings causing plugs and nozzles to foul." Guys, I had the same exact problem. After talking with the Deer Valley guys this seems to be a rather common occurrence. If your primer locks up, don t force it! Just pull the primer line off at the supercharger, remove the injector", and clean it. There are 4 very minute holes that the fuel passes through to vaporize it into the intake system. Trying to force the primer just results in more work on the primer too!<<<< Hey Jeff, Looks like just ANOTHER reason to use Marvel Mystery Oil !!!!! I'm kidding, but I continue to use it, as I swear it keeps my plugs cleaner. Engine idles much smoother when cold right after start. Besides, it smells great too !! Cheers, Steve Dalton

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug Sapp" <rvfltd@televar.com> Tim and all, That was me, I am trying to discover if it is possible to design a bottle that will fit all three aircraft (50,52,CJ6). I have examples of the CJ, but am still looking for TU bottles from the 50 and 52. The new bottle will be a stainless shell which is carbon fiber wrapped. In stock at this time: One unused (new old stock) emergency bottle for CJ6. Just back from China on the 20th, brought a few parts back in my luggage, had one hell of a time with the emergency tank .......You would have thought the playboy channel was playing on the scanner monitor the way they were huddled around it, all pointing at the round "thing"...."Sir we would like to look in your luggage".....ah sir what is this??? They tried real hard to make a bomb out of it. And since I flew out of Vancouver BC on this trip, I got to explain it all again to the US customs people at the border crossing. Anyway finally made it home, below is a list of what I brought back: Main air valves 6 ea QS1 brake valves 2 ea flap and front gear valves 4 ea (all sold already but more in 30 days) check valve springs 100 ea prop seals (both) 100 ea intake tube seals 100ea Mag coil 1 ea Mag high tension rods 6ea emergency air tank 1 ea Diverter valves, flap 6 ea diverter valves, gear 6 ea Chinese version of Montezuma's revenge 1 case :o( Please contact me off list for any of the above. It's good to be home again. I have a new bottle en-route. What I will look to do is replace the main side in the not to distant future. There was talk of a fix out there in the forum of new manufacture bottles. Any word on the progress? I have a 3 liter bottle that is tango uniform that I would be willing to donate for the cause. Anyone... Tim N359FG Yak-50

Learn how to hand prop start the engine. This was the standard starting method for the first 50 years of aviation. 50 years ago when I was learning how to fly, a very large % of aircraft were started that way. Years ago we sheared a starter shaft on a Wright 1820 on the DC-3 when I was co-pilot in the Bahamas. We hand started it. Piece of Cake. . You don't need air nor do you need a battery. It is not to dangerous IF YOU ARE CAREFUL. I truly believe a aviator's experience is in question and incomplete if he has never propped an airplane. ;-) Despite their "high horse power", the HS6a or M-14p are easy to prop. I've owned my CJ about 11 years,- though I've been caught without air pressure a number times, I've never needed to worry about NOT getting my airplane started. This year at S&F, I propped a Yak 52 for a guy who left his air on O/N. I am 65 years old, so you know its not a mussel thing. :-] Jim"Pappy" Goolsby

    Subject: Re: accesory air supply
--> Yak-List message posted by: Jim Ivey <jim@jimivey.com> My hangar landlord, Jack Beeson, was a pilot in the Army Air Corps (and later Air Force) from 1940 through 1965. From B-25's early in the war through B-36's and B-52's he flew a lot of hardware. He keeps a Swift in the adjacent hangar. The other day I showed Jack my Cornelius air compressor in the tail section of my CJ and he knew all about them. One their primary use uses was in actuating the bomb bay doors on the B-29's he flew. Later, while assigned to SAC B-47's, there was a need for charging the aircraft air systems. SAC aircraft had to be mission ready all the time so proper pressurization was critical. Naturally the Air Force did not have enough ground units for their squadron based at Biggs Army Airfield. The brass didn't consider that a good excuse for not having all bombers ready so Jack flew a DC-3 over to Davis Monithan with his mechanic (some later famous guy named Ford). Jack was friends with the officer in charge but his buddy couldn't officially let him raid the parked B-29's for Cornelius compressors. However, he invited Jack out for an extended coffee break while Ford "toured" the parked 29's. Jack and Ford returned to Biggs with a number of the compressors and put them on carts. There was an abundant supply of used batteries on the field as the B-47's had just switched over from lead acid type to a more modern variety. They then always had all the air they needed on the ramp until some brass caught site of the homemade carts. As Ernie said, they take a fair amount of current. On my CJ I can run the unit in flight or on the ground. If on the ground on battery only the baterry gets worked out pretty good so I try to charge the air lines only instead of opening the main air valve and charging the whole main air tank. The lines are usually sufficient for a start. If you can in fact find a Cornelius on eBay for a fair price buy it. They are getting rare as hen's teeth. --> Yak-List message posted by: Dr Andre Katz <bu131@swbell.net> hello Pappy: txs for the suggestion, unfortunately I am (was?) a surgeon until a tiger moth ate my hand with the prop, one day i'll tell you the story, in Casa Grande with a burnout magneto ferrying the damn wooden contraption but I digress. No thanks you wont see me doing it again. I had a friend prop start my SNJ-5 once during an airshow in Georgetown, fellow was short 5 foot tall and had to get in his tiptoes but if I did not witness the damn thing I would not be telling you. Cornelius, where do I get a Cornelius and can I get it mounted in the airplane? 60 pounds lots of weight, just got rid of smoke tank and moving the seat back, will post some pictures later. based on the sp-55 from our friend in aussie land. regards andres

I like my fingers and arms to much. I just carry a pony scuba tank with schrader attachement on a stage one with a pressure guage. Holds 2500 psi and is about the size of a bomb dummy unit (BDU). Fits easily in the baggage compartment (the Russian heavy fabric bag that fits under the turtle deck). Its good for one good start and my arm is not in jepordy. Also, there are plenty of Dive shops scattered around the areas to not be able to get air. Hand propping a Gooney Bird....balls! Doc
