I have a Yak55M and have noticed a slow leak in the air system pressure,
(unless the compressor is selected on)...however, as soon as the compressor
is turned off the systems slowly...bleeds down 10 psi each 20-30 sec. After
soap bubbling the thing to death, to no avail, tried isolating parts of the
system.
It appears, that the starter solenoid vlave is not fully seated or closing,
thus allowing air to escape.
My two questions are this...
My mech is unsure (with out damaging) how to dis-assemble the "top part" or
"stem". Therefore does anybody know how to do this?
He describes this as the "Stem with "o" ring, leather ring at base, which
bolts into the valve block. He is specifically interested in the coil which
piggy backs reference the 19mm bolt. Not being a maint type I can only
relay!
The second question is...where can I buy a complete new starter solenoid
valve?
Thanks in advance, -rs-

After fixing an air leak by slightly tightening the line that connects
into the bottom of the air distributor (where one line goes in and one
line per cylinder for starting comes out), I have a strange situation
where when I press the start button I hear a good FWAP! but the prop
doesn't start to turn.
A few more presses on the starter button and a few more FWAP!s and
eventually it will go around. At the point where the prop turns there's
more of a hissing noise, which I'm assuming is the air being distributed
into each of the cylinders.
There seems to be less of an issue when the engine is warm.
What could be causing this?
What is the purpose of the ball in the tube at the bottom of the air
distributor?

Ron,
Check your PT-6 Trainer Aircraft Overhaul Manual for Airframe Accessories,
page 23-1 thru -4. Complete directions (in English) can be found there as
well as the cut away drawings that plainly show how the unit is put
together. Another good drawing is shown in the CJ6 parts manual.
BUT... With the air pressure on you can take the "air out" line off and put
a bit of soapy water on your finger, place your finger over the fitting and
if you have a leak in the unit it will be easy to see.
Cost for a new or overhauled unit is $275.00 No stock right now but will
have some in about 30 - 45 days.
A ultrasonic leak detector is very handy to find this type of hard to find
leak, they have a wand or probe and a head set.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Subject: | exhaust gas removal |
--> Yak-List message posted by: ron wasson <ronwasson@mindspring.com>
I tried something today that seems to work and my even be
meant for it. On my CJ on the left side under the air bottle is a
drain access panel. It is hinged and has one quick lock fastener.
Under the panel is a another hinged panel screwed flush to that panel
and another quick lock fastener If you take the screw out and flip
the hinged panel over the quick lock lines up with hole for the other
fastener. This causes the panel to hang down about a inch at the rear
and flush with hinge line at the front. I think it causes a low
pressure and sucks air out of the fuselage. There is no detector in
mine plane but the smell of exhaust is strong on landing with flaps
out. Front cockpit vent open there seems to be no smell. Back side
vent open seems to make the smell come back but not as strong as
before. Panel was unbent after two flights.
My question is if this panel design
is not for this then what is it for. I did not think this up but I
don not have that person's permission quote him.

Subject: | Starter Solenoid Valve help |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Royden Heays" <heaysr@telus.net>
Hello Ron,
Many locations within the system can be the culprit. On my 55M it first was
the air pressure gauge internals. I got that fixed by replacing the gauge,
then it seems I over tightened the gauge to airline fitting and that became
a point of leakage. I have a Swagelock air pressure relief valve that
replaces the Rusian blow off valve. That is also a source of leakage when
the valve gets gummed up or does not seat properly. That is fixed with a
teardown and clean-up; all too frequently.
I have also had to teardown and cleanup the not return valve as it was not
seating properly after getting gummed up. That was another source of
leakage.
My attempts to locate these leakage points were unsuccessful with soapy
water.
It would try all these areas before going after the starter solenoid as they
are easier to get at and cost nothing.
Regards,
Royden
