--> Yak-List message posted by: "Royden Heays" <heaysr@telus.net>
Hello Ron,
Many locations within the system can be the culprit. On my 55M it first was
the air pressure gauge internals. I got that fixed by replacing the gauge,
then it seems I over tightened the gauge to airline fitting and that became
a point of leakage. I have a Swagelock air pressure relief valve that
replaces the Rusian blow off valve. That is also a source of leakage when
the valve gets gummed up or does not seat properly. That is fixed with a
teardown and clean-up; all too frequently.
I have also had to teardown and cleanup the not return valve as it was not
seating properly after getting gummed up. That was another source of
leakage.
My attempts to locate these leakage points were unsuccessful with soapy
water.
It would try all these areas before going after the starter solenoid as they
are easier to get at and cost nothing.
Regards,
Royden

Subject: Yak-List: Starter Solenoid Valve help
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Ron Spencer"
--> <splitimage.wing@verizon.net>
I have a Yak55M and have noticed a slow leak in the air system pressure,
(unless the compressor is selected on)...however, as soon as the compressor
is turned off the systems slowly...bleeds down 10 psi each 20-30 sec. After
soap bubbling the thing to death, to no avail, tried isolating parts of the
system.
It appears, that the starter solenoid vlave is not fully seated or closing,
thus allowing air to escape.
My two questions are this...
My mech is unsure (with out damaging) how to dis-assemble the "top part" or
"stem". Therefore does anybody know how to do this?
He describes this as the "Stem with "o" ring, leather ring at base, which
bolts into the valve block. He is specifically interested in the coil which
piggy backs reference the 19mm bolt. Not being a maint type I can only
relay!
The second question is...where can I buy a complete new starter solenoid
valve?
Thanks in advance, -rs-

The only way to compare these two tires FARILY is subject them to the same

done that. Yes you can compare what has happened on you airplane BUT only if
your mod of operation didn't change and every landing was exactly the same.
Personally I've had a little better ware with Desser BUT their tubes stink
in the way they set the valve stem. However if the price was right I'd buy a
Russian tire. I operate off a grass strip and about half my takeoffs and

A little more on tires that I forgot add.
Most tires are made in batches all made and formed from a common mix. Mess
up the ingredients of the mix just a little and you'll have different ware
for that whole batch. Of course one manufacture's mix may be better.
Also effecting a tires ware beside the ingredients is the forming process.
If temps and pressure are not right the tire will not wear the same. I would
not doubt that the manufactures have limits on their products and they go
out the door. Just how wide those limits are, is guessing by any of us.
If you guys think our tires are expensive - on B-24 and B-17 we pay $3,000
for a new tire. The only two companies in the world that make them, do so
ONLY in batches of 100. We 're-cap' our tires - they can be done only once -
about $1,500. We change tires about 4 times a year.
So you see all things are relative. I think getting up set over whether one
tire is better than another based on one's experiences is silly. There are
too variables involved.

Guys
If you are worried about tire wear then buy Dessers Re-caps, they are three
time thicker than the normal tires, cheaper for the tight budgets and they
will last over a full year of flying. The guys in Northern California that fly
a lot use them solely now due to long wear and deep tread life.
Check them out and quite bitching..........just go fly.

Do you have any more of the Russian tires for my 52? I'd like to order two
complete sets as the Russian ones I got from you are still going strong
and
lasting two-three times as long as the Desser tires.
Let's face it guys, the Desser tires are way to friggin' soft and wear
out
too friggin fast. Let's give our bidness to the Russians...........
HMMMMMM? I got 65,000 miles on my automotive tires and their still
going
strong. I got maybe 40-50 landings on my old Desser tires and their
history.
Trust me...the formulation of Desser rubber sucks!

Here at Deer Valley Arizona, we have fifteen CJ-6's Two, Yak-50's, Two
Yak-52. Desser recap's last the longest. Dessers new tire come in second .
The Russian/ Chinese tire come in last.
(DVT Rwy 4500'x75' Elv 1476') and it can get warm here, like Jim says we
all have different landing techniques or it could be the tires like the hot
weather in the west,

Dear Yakers,

of gills.
If you have one and wish to sell it, my friend would be forever grateful.
His name is John Bergsma

Yeah, but "ware" is a word and the spell checker would mark it as correct.
But on the other hand, did you understand what Jim was saying? I did. No
problem with the good information he put out there. I would rather have Jim's
postings with misspellings and wrong words than not have Jim's postings.
I betcha we could find something to correct in almost everybody's post, like
in your case you didn't bother to edit out any of the extraneous and
no-longer-necessary text from the original postings. That is really annoying.
How many times have I got to tell you to edit out the extraneous text? And how
many times have I got to tell you to put a question mark at the end of a question?
Oh, let me put a smiley-face on here to make it all better. ;-)
Someone once told me that the most powerful motivating force in the human
animal is the need to edit someone else's writing. I think they were right!
Now, back to the wear of landing-ware ...

Jim,
I seem to recall that neither the B-24 nor the B-17 came with anti-skid
brakes, is that correct? After that "Chirp, Chirp" you must be letting
it roll out a while before clamping on the binders. That "BOOM" you hear
coming from the wheel well following the "Chirp, Chirp" is bound to
bring forth an involutary h Sh**"!

Hard to land a hand on that. Navy arrivals called landings that are really
crashes by any other standard.

I guest it...this thread is gitt'n stuck on stupid. Oh, sorry meant guessed
it. Next let us look at how many millimeters of rubber we burn off by each
landing. That is so we can determine who crash lands on the web and who
finesses their landings on to the web. Remember, the more rubber you leave
on the numbers is less rubber to taxi back with!

Some folks have already extended their Exhaust outlets. Now that I have 3" dia
SS material in I need to know how much longer to extend. My sense is that 4-1/2"
to 6" will get the smoke down under the wing in cruise. Nothing would help
when pulling "G's" except a Harvard-type winter kit. Not doing that.

Craig;
That won't help either. I have a Harvard 4 with smoke and the original
heater system. The smoke still comes in from fillet panels and other holes
in the aft section and rolls forward inside the aircraft.
I built the smoke system 20 years ago and sealed all the fillets and panels
at the time. It was virtually leak free for a few years but has since
deteriorated to it's present smoky state.
With the Harvard or T6 exhaust the smoke exits above the wing in exactly the
same position. The airflow over the wing (with the T6) keeps the smoke in
contact until about the same position as the Harvard exhaust outlet.
The harvard exhaust has a negative - costs 4 Kts in cruise - but I fly in
shirt sleeves in winter while my T6 buddies are freezing their (
&*($ off. -
Might work for the CJ????

If you extend the exhaust would there be a problem removing the lower cowl

Today I spent the day resealing my exhaust system joints. I used 4
different methods. On two joints I applied muffler patch tape under the clamps
and
over the thin stainless steel bands. On one I used a white glass high temp
tape over the gap, with a stainless steel band on top than sealed with the
muffler patch tape. On the last two I used two different bands of paste one
black the other white, that are suppose to seal exhaust systems.
I am trying to get all the exhaust gas to go out the pipes and keep as much
clean air in the inside the cowl as possible.
The material are supposed to harden over night so I hope to run the engine
tomorrow and see what happens with these joints. If none of them leak, I'll
leave them be, to see how well they hold up.
BTW the wife and I are heading to Massachusetts this week-end for Rob &
Caroline Collings wedding reception at the foundation. They were married in
Sweden (she's Swedish) the first of the month but decided to have the reception
back home after their honeymoon. Besides a fly over of the bombers; a bunch
of other foundation airplanes are supposed to take part. Including the F-4!
Should be quite a bash!
BTW Yep there is no anti skid on the B-17 or B-24. To much brake on the 17
will put you right on you nose (snap) like that. On the 24 you'll most
likely brake something in the nose wheel structure. Its not strong at all. Both
airplane have a real fade problem if they get to hot. Built just like the
Yaks and CJs except use fluid. Both aircraft have 88 brake pads per wheel at
$35.00 per pad.

Agree with Pappy. Need to get the gases out of the engine compartment. If
we have uncontaminated air in the engine compartment, then it will not be
exiting thru the gills and be sucked into the cockpit. Granted at high
alpha, the airflow will be over the wing and sucked into the cockpit. We
will find out tomorrow when Pappy flies with a totally sealed exhaust
system. If this does not lower the CO content in the cockpit, then we have
to look at things that scrub the
CO. All of which require moisture and heat since they are a catalyst. The
CO will be changed to CO2 after passing thru the catalyst. The CO2 (carbon
dioxide) then has to be farther filtered thru Soda Lime to remove the CO2.
The above system is a catalytic converter that is found on your own
automobiles with a slight twist. That being Metalulit. Finding the
substance for purchase has been a challenge.
