--> Yak-List message posted by: Aviatre@aol.com While running my flight school, I found that the recaps lasted much longer than new tires. Especially when compared to the economy tires such as the Mc Crearys. As far as our planes go yes they are heavier than the "spam cans" therefore we will not get the same wear as the lighter airplanes. The best way that I think a fair comparison could be made between the commie tires and the desser tires would be for one of us to put a new commie on one side, and a Desser on the other. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Genzlinger, Reade" <ReadeG@Cairnwood.com> I went through the Russian originals in about 150 hours. Had the Russian cores recapped by Desser and they are 350 plus hours. The Russian cores are very tough and matched with the Desser recapping service gives you a very good product. I rarely use the brakes and then only in 1 or 2 second bursts. Local field is 3000 paved and if it's busy I 'll make the turn off otherwise I just let her coast to the end. At 580 hours I changed the break shoes for the first time. BTW - speaking of breaks - I learned that there are at least two types of break shoes for the Yak - one is very hard and the other quite soft (you can easily tell the difference with a screwdriver!). I had purchased two sets of shoes over the years and when it came to servicing the breaks I apparently used one set of hard shoes on one side and the soft set on the other. It made me look like the flying farmer at times!! Eventually I was getting breaking from only one side. Kudos to Morten Stoverud (AP/IA) at Flying W for servicing this and some other items. (not processed: message from valid local sender) --> Yak-List message posted by: "aaron marshall" <aaron@marshallservices.com> Have to second the IR temp gun. Excellent investment!! Another thing that works well especially for a bad plug or wire is carpenters chalk. Especially if your by yourself and dont have someone to shoot the cylinders with the temp gun while engine is running. Simply scrape a one inch line on each exhaust stack about 3/4 of an inch past flange. Run engine up on the rough mag for 30 seconds and shut down. Chalk will have turned white on all stacks except the one with the rough plug or wire. That one will be blue or orange. Next best thing to an engine analyzer for quickly isolating the bad cylinder.
