Hello: I'm new to the YAK group and I need some info.
Where is best source for altimeter that will fit into the panel (center
lower knob) and encoding?
Next, where is best source to have the airspeed indicators refaced to Knots?
Thanks for the help.

Hey Bob welcome to the list. Getting into Yaks aye???
Ebay is your best bet for altimeters, but there is nothing special
about the ones installed in these planes. There is a guy here in
Florida (I think around Naples) that refaces the russian guages. I
spoke to him several years ago when I wanted to convert some stuff in
the 29. But to be quite honest its just easier to replace with new air
speed indicator.

I bought several Yaks and kept one of myself. So, I need to get everything
changed over. The altimeter has the knob at center bottom, so I need to
change the hole or find the right one to fit.

I just filed out the hole in the panel and installed a US altimeter. Most
people tend to use a blind encoder for the transponder that is independent of
the altimeter. No need to lose both if one instrument fails.
As for the ASI, look in Trade-A-Plane and contact several of the instrument
overhaulers. Most can remark the face of the instrument in whatever markings
you choose. I would recommend getting them to do a dual scale with both KPH
and Kts as the handbooks are in KPH but ATC like KTS so you can have both
worlds on the same instrument. They can also mark the instrument with the
standard markings like green arc, white arc, and red-line.
Barry Hancock likes an outfit down is San Diego (I think that is where they
were) as they were willing to clean and remark the Russian and Chinese
instruments. I have had good luck dealing with the Gyro House in Auburn, CA.

The altimeter in my Bonanza has the knob in the center bottom. I'll
look to see if I can read a manufacturer on it.

Bob,
It is also just as easy to fly with the AS left in kilometers. Learn the
Klicks in the Russian manual for Air speeds and fly the A/C that way. If
you really want knots, get a garmin 3 or a 295 for the knots refernce. In
Kilo/hr_- Gear 190 to 200. flaps 170, over the fence at 160 and hold the
flair.

My speedo is in Klicks, and when we fly formation most of us brief in
clicks. Like Doc said, the GPS is good enough for Knots.

Group,
The cut out in the stock CJ and Yak panel is set up for what is called a
"6:00 set" altimeter. This style of alt was used in just about every WWII
aircraft and were produced late into the 60's. Why the mfg went to a 7:00
knob position is a mystery to me but when they did the 6:00 units were
considered surplus and were available at many shops for 150 to 200.00 in
overhauled and tagged condition. Now they are getting rather hard to find
and the price was about 350.00 the last time I bought any overhauled and
tagged units.
If anyone out there knows of a shop that will convert the faces of the
Chinese millibar alt to US standard inches of mercury, please post the info.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

I have installed altimeters from older Bonanzas that have the knob in the 6

sent the air speed indicators from my CJs to Instruments of San Diego for
new faces in knots.

Bob,
Very rarely will you find any altimeters with the Kolsman knob at the 6
o'clock position anymore. If you do find one, you'll pay dearly for it.
You will have to cut a notch in the panel for the standard 7 o'clock
position knob on the altimeter.
Airspeed indicator - make it easy on yourself. It's nothing but a number
and most everyone leaves the kilometers airspeed indicator in the panel. If
not, you can purchase an airspeed indicator in knots or MPH that will fit
right in the same hole. Save your money and simply remember the key numbers
in kilometers.
Dennis

I would check with Desser - but my sense is that you could recap these cores
a number of times as long as none of the inner cord is showing.

Hey guys...
as you pull out these "lousy commie can't read it because it's in
meters" gauges. Please let me know how much you want for working units.
I know, I know I'm the weird one - I want to put two back in my Sukhoi
and one in my Yak-55.
The neat things they do are: Allows you to "zero out" up here (5050msl)
and also to know just where the box is...100 meters agl (bottom) to
1000m agl(top)
Thanks, rick b

No Rick, you are not the only wierd one. I prefer them to knots also. The
numbers are the same as in the jet. Less confusion for my dewindling brain

Gus,
I am interested in participating in any forum which lists safety items
regarding our YAK airplanes. I own and fly a YAK 50. Let me know it you
plan to move forward with this project and what steps should be taken to
become a listed member. Thankyou

You can't convert a metric altimeter. The conversion requires completely
