Bob,
Very rarely will you find any altimeters with the Kolsman knob at the 6
o'clock position anymore. If you do find one, you'll pay dearly for it.
You will have to cut a notch in the panel for the standard 7 o'clock
position knob on the altimeter.
Airspeed indicator - make it easy on yourself. It's nothing but a number
and most everyone leaves the kilometers airspeed indicator in the panel. If
not, you can purchase an airspeed indicator in knots or MPH that will fit
right in the same hole. Save your money and simply remember the key numbers
in kilometers.

I phoned Desser this time round also and they said that cores are re-capped
on condition. Reality shows that they do not get more than one re-cap out of
a set. It all depends in usage and storage conditions.

I would check with Desser - but my sense is that you could recap these cores
a number of times as long as none of the inner cord is showing.

It is up and running with, when you join, 60 members as well as many guest
lurkers. I posted a Sukhoi spar issue two days ago. In 24 hours anyone who
needed to know about this found out (this and the acro list & Hubie's Sukhoi
list) with pictures and a place to discuss resolution.
I would urge you that when you have an issue post no matter how small or
insignificant you think it is as someone will benefit. I think that this
SU-29 issue has proved the use of this service, today a Sukhoi tomorrow your
aircraft.
I have been asking the Nanchang community to post about the tail crack
problem that was discussed a while ago but till now no posts, common guys a
new owner would really like to know about this stuff.
A perfect example was a post by Derric Lee about injector problems with his
primer. I have never had this problem but apparently lots of other people
have. While not a danger it saves hours of messing around trying to diagnose
a problem
The site is at http://www.notasukhoi.com/sme
No need to remember the sme part there is a link from http://notasukhoi.com
home page.
Enjoy, I pay for this server for other reasons so this will remain a free
service as it is my pleasure to help out

OK, so in order to reach everyone I have to join YPA, use their server, figure
out which is the right forum, and then post there. Next I have to repeat for
your service. Lastly I have to do it all over again with the Yak-list. What a
pain.
If we are lucky, several more people will think they can do it better still
and then we will have to repeat still more.

I agree that numbers are numbers and that it's just as easy to fly
klicks. My ASI's are rescreened with klicks on the outside and a knots
ring on the inside....very handy.
Problem with GPS is on those occasions that you have a substantial wind
and ATC is asking you to fly a particular airspeed, etc. If you're not
worried about that, then no *need* for knots, but if you're getting it
rescreened, it's worth the extra few bucks to get it done....

Instrument Overhaul of San Diego is the name of the place....however,
the owner welched on the deal I had struck with him a few years back,
which was I would get a discount if "X" number of Yak guys used
him....he got the business and I didn't get squat.
There's a guy in Arizona (TJ, do you know the name?) that does good
work, too. Puts a russian star on the head of the indicator and other
fun stuff at your whim. Reasonable prices, too.
I have 6 totally overhauled CJ's coming in the next several months (see
RPAtalk.com for details), first two on the boat in less than two weeks.
I'm gonna be getting back in the refacing game here real quick and
will let you know what I find....

I would second Barry's comments on Instrument Overhaul - the owner is
VERY dishonest, and not to be trusted. He has a very bad reputation
around here, and its unclear how much longer the shop will be around.
However, they have done nice work for me in the past redialing
instruments, but the owner also ripped me off for $2,000, so I'm not
going back!

That's why you need to know how to make kilo to knts conversion in your
head. Or buy a Garmin 396, you get the winds aloft with the weather. We are
splitting hairs on a knat's ass here, Barry. KPH X 0.5 = Knots/hr.
Technically it is 0.53. That's how I respond to airspeed request from ATC.
Roger, look at the clock and divide by 2. For me it was time saved for
flying. If you really want a Knots reading clock, I have a new one in the
box that I bought when I was having this arguement with myself just before
my YAK arrived in the box.

Danged guys,
You can get non-STO'd AS indicators for a song. Try Chief Aero for one. OK
you may have to work with a file a few minutes. But truely, there is
nothing wrong with flying around in Kilos/hr. Ask the Brits and the rest of
the Europeans. It is a number. Everything else is physics.

Gang,
I am certainly interested in safety forums, too! However, how many
sources of forums do we need in a community of this size? Look, I am
all for anyone's right to do whatever they want, but when it comes to
this community where the intent is to disseminate useful and, in some
cases, life saving information (the FOD cover in the Yak-52 comes to
mind), wouldn't the prudent thing be to pool our resources, time, and
talent where it will have the greatest impact? If you want to have a
forum because you can, great, have at it. But if the real intent is to
best serve the community, my suggestion is to put the resources where
they will do the most good. The Yak-list was well entrenched before
the RPA ever got going and is a great forum. We already have a forum
web site at RPAtalk.com. Wouldn't it make more sense to have those
interested in contributing run that part of the "machine" instead of
further fractionalizing information?
Not trying to get people to tow the "convention" line, but rather
trying to make the dissemination of information efficient and
convenient for everyone.
Cheers,
Barry

I have had several email messages from people for supposedly lambasting Gus
for creating a new list. I wasn't. I was bemoaning the need to subscribe to
yet another list to try to keep up with the information.
But maybe Gus' list will be so good I won't need any other list. I do know
that when the information gets fractured to multiple sub lists you end up
subscribing to all the sub lists anyway.
But for very different aircraft, it makes sense to have other lists. There are
probably very few L-39 maintenance issues that overlap with CJ6A and Yak-52
maintenance issues. OTOH, the nearly identical nature of the powerplant and
systems in the Yak-5x and CJ6A make a common list seem pretty sensible.
Welcome to the free market.

Stay away unless you have tons of money and tons of time to spend on
something that may never fly.

Ron is there a reason why you don't want to use a std CJ check valve? I
always have them and overhaul parts in stock. The CJ check valve is very
easily converted to fit in the 52. And they only cost about $10.00 to
overhaul when the time comes. The are "female /female" with pipe threads so
you could even adapt them to AN if you wanted.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp
