It is completely unscientific to compare the relative performance of three different
aeroplanes chasing each other around the sky!
We have done proper back-to-back tests on an Su-26 with 400-hp, and MTV-9-260-27
and MTV-9-260-29.
The tests were done on the same day; the same pilot; the same fuel load AND a slight
correction for the temperature/pressure change while changing the prop over.=20
The improvement for various parameters was between 6 percent and 14 percent - if
you would like specific figures, please let me know and we can e-mail the table
directly - as this list does not accept tables!

Craig, Dave, etc. I enjoyed your iteration about the "very Marin" gas prices.
I, unfortunately, add to your discomfort. Here at Ruidoso, NM (SRR) the price
is $5.18 per gallon (US) NO latte, NO windscreen cleaning, NO S*#
t. I'm sure we'll be lonely for awhile. Fortunately, Carrizozo is only five minutes
away at $3.75. Considering all, I'm very happy to be here and not in Naples,

FWIW, I wasn't suggesting running Mogas with ethanol in your airplane,
that was pure hyperbole. And Brian, as for your comment about the CJ6A
and Bonanza the similarities end at being single engine piston
aircraft, as far as I'm concerned, but I'm biased. Heck, there are a

Well, just to be clear for the single seat guys thinking about doing
the formation thing, that's once you're cleared solo,. I know it's a
hassle, but protocol is that you get cleared solo in a two holer before
mounting your mighty single ship steed. Time to buddy up to your
closest Yak-52 or CJ driver.... ;)
Also, on formation takeoffs, etc. If you're interested in the
procedure we "should" be using, go to the "Operations" section of
www.flyredstar.org and download the FAST manual. This manual is being
adopted as the FAST standard...well, because it's the best formation
manual out there. Hey Leads and Wings, when's the last time you read
it? I know I haven't read it this year....
As for Mark B. going to Waycross (everybody duck.....) make sure to
bring your flight suit! ;-O

Truth is Gus, you from experience will rightly know, we're all green with envy
looking at #1 The Facility #2 The weather #3 The Space #4 The Participant numbers
#5 The CHEAP fuel.......just 2 weeks ago we managed only two wx interrupted
days and a formation sortie in the circuit in 5 full days of Formation School.........nil
wind and matching temperature and dew points all week ! We did though
have 4 Extras , 14 Yak 52's and one CJ6 plus visiting Yak 11's but the wx
kept the big iron on the ground.
It appears some of our US compatriots can't spot a compliment when it jumps''''''.....oh
never mind.........two nations divided by a common language sounds
less contentious.
Relish your suggestion of a mass formation 'love-in'......I know a good few over
here besides me who would be up for that. And for what its worth I'd rather
it didn't try to set 'us' against 'them' but was a forum to share good safe practise
and SOP's....whilst at the same time turning prodigious quantities of cheap***
avgas into noise and a load o' fun . ...BTW ***current UK version of 'cheap'
is $1:94 per litre !
FWIW...the awards photos show pilots who all look very similar to ourselves..except
that is, where's all the gals ? We had 3 this last time around.....3 very
good pilots......as you might expect.

Cold man, very cold.
Could this be where we have the first international formation contest ? I am
sure that planes could be made available to visiting pilots for a judged formation.
USA vs Europe vs Antipods vs Africa
Now that would be worth being a fly on the wall for.
We have the Oscars, Emies (sp?) etc well how about the Papiski's to be judged
by bare breasted women and argued about for months, at great length with anyone
that will listen.
Now that is something I would buy a ticket to watch, as long as it came with
a happy ending :)))))

Well, I was mostly pointing out a useful source of factual information in the
form of the Petersen web site. Sometimes opinion reigns on this list with
facts being somewhat less in evidence and I thought a pointer to some factual
information would be useful.

We tend to focus on subtleties. In the grand scheme of aviation, there is much
more similarity than difference between the CJ6A and the Bonanza. Sure we like
to think that the CJ6A is wonderfully different but, truth be told, it isn't
that different than any FAA-designated, "single-engine, complex,
high-performance," aircraft. I just picked the Bonanza as it is a popular name
but you can lump the CJ6A and Yak-52 together with the Comanche, C-210,
Mooney, Bonanza, Navion, etc. With the exception of the pneumatic system there
are far more similarities than differences.
Sure, the devil is in the details but if you put someone who is competent in a
couple of different "complex" aircraft into a CJ6A or Yak-52, odds are he/she
will fly the CJ6A or Yak-52 tolerably well without breaking anything.
YMMV

Speaking as an owner of both aircraft in question. I would much rather
fly the CJ than the Banana. The CJ is easier to fly, easier to
maintain, is more rugged, and more reliable. The Banana is smoother
and faster, has better luggage and passenger space and has better
range. With completely different engine technologies, braking systems
and landing systems and totally differetn flying charateristics I cant
find much similarity between the 2 other than that they're both fixed
wing single engine, complex monoplanes. Humans and Cows are similar
too as we're both mamals.

Subject: | CJ6A vs. Bonanza comparison |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Roger Kemp" <viperdoc@mindspring.com>
Ok then, so forget about the commonality of the complex airplanes other
than they both have two wings, an engine, a tail and feet that fold up.
That said, now point me toward the Ethanol!! Pappy, you've had enough for
say 12 hours!

Kevin,
Was that 3 guys or was it 3 girls or both acting as ....
Seriously would love to see and even try to help make yours and Gus's suggestion
come to pass. The forum atmosphere would certainly promote congeniality but
having participated in a few Red Flags, competition always sets its foot forward.
And yes at this time our fuel is much cheaper than yours. We are fighting
like hell to keep it that way also! Our weather is generally nicer than yours
too all be for a huricane or 3!
Scottie, Ol Boy, are ya up for an international Red Air?! In the next year, like
2006...fallish time frame?!

Cold man, very cold.
Could this be where we have the first international formation contest ? I am sure
that planes could be made available to visiting pilots for a judged formation.
USA vs Europe vs Antipods vs Africa
Now that would be worth being a fly on the wall for.
We have the Oscars, Emies (sp?) etc well how about the Papiski's to be judged by
bare breasted women and argued about for months, at great length with anyone
that will listen.
Now that is something I would buy a ticket to watch, as long as it came with a
happy ending :)))))

This was the only "mechanical" during the whole Selma clinic. A plugged snot valve

The Banana comparison is closest to the truth; especially the 2-seat version aka
T-34. Both have the same overall span and length, the same airfoil section,
and comparable power at in the 285HP civilian flavor.
The CJ rolls quicker, with lighter controls. Performance parameters are also comparable
between well-maintained examples of each. Add the M-14P and it's no
contest. Of course we know which one we prefer.
BTW: In the low-level Sun 60 race, I edged out an A-35 straight tail and whupped
the LoPresti Mooney with my CJ6, but I'd like to see some big engine T-34's
compete.

Yes, Jill, I believe that overhauls and props will take on much more importance
as our fleet builds hours and OEM prices escalate with world inflation. Your
new AZ operation could be just the thing for folks caught in a time-sensitive
crunch. My VMP OH took 2 years from crate-up to delivery in my hanger. Thanks
to the Yak-list I was able to locate another M-14P, get it delivered, install
it , and be back in the air 3 weeks from posting!
As for the V530, it is literally bulletproof. I'm *almost* ready to try a few FMJ
.357 rounds to my spare hub as a test. Just haven't drank enough beer yet!
My homebrew 'glass & kevlar redo of the blades is holding up well. After 99hrs
of ops, there are 2 grams difference between the blades...which I will correct.
A little kevlar on the back of the blades really stops all those nasty's from
gravel. Why pay big bucks when the stock stuff works great? ( except for airframe
drag of course).
I love this list!

is probably the only one in the U.S. with original paint. What is LEFT of
the original paint. It was marginal when I bought it 6 years ago. It is in
the "way ugly" category now. I've been fortunate enough to see really
GORGEOUS Yak-50's (and 52's) that Tim Gagnon took while out west and I
simply have to hang my head in embarrassment. That said, I am not taking my
50 any place soon to "show off". I did that just once... to the Worlds in
Lakeland a few years ago, and I got a lot of flak for how it looked. So...
oh well.
Now.... another aimed round coming your way Barry (sorry dude!). The only
two holer I can fit in and fly is a T-34, (800 plus hours, many in form) or
an AT-6 // SNJ-5, T-28, etc. 52's and CJ's... out of the question. I
simply can not fit. So, even though I in fact DO have a buddy on the field
with a 52, that is out. My buddy who "had" a T-34 has given up after
spending around $70,000 trying to make the FAA happy and is buying a 52. I
do not have enough time in the other aircraft to qualify for insurance nor
the $$$ to keep them full of fuel.
Hey, you brought all this up.... I tried to AVOID it! :-)
It would indeed be fun to make it to Waycross, and Barry... you would have
to duck.... because my 50 sans parachute or flight boots, or nifty-50-flight
suit, would make it a point to demonstrate minimum prop tip to ground
clearance in your immediate vicinity!
Sigh.... just daydreaming!
In reality, I suppose I will just have to continue flying form with my
retired Marine buddies, Sergei Boriak, and Hubie Tolson once in awhile,
untrained as I admit we all are.
All kidding aside I agree, your FAST manual is indeed very well done, and
well worth reading. Luckily one can learn from it wearing a flight suit or
not. But if Barry actually DOES happen to be around, the requirements to
wear flight BOOTS makes absolute sense... one DOES want to wear something on
one's feet when standing in a rising tide of stuff that comes from the ass
end of a bull.
Best Regards my friend,
Mark B
p.s. And yes, that splash in the water was indeed a shot across your bow!
Take care.

As for Mark B. going to Waycross (everybody duck.....) make sure to
bring your flight suit! ;-O
Cheers,
Barry

Growler,
Kevalar? Tell me more. My V450 blades are getting dinged up pretty good now from
all those pesky pebbles that are blown all over my ramp from twins using it
as a turn-around! What are you doing for balancing. I paid more attention to your
fairings around your exhaust at SEM. I did not even look at your props!

Well...alrightyyyy...theeeennnn! That being said don't sugar coat it! On the topic
of untrained...would have to say 800 hrs in a Navy training program flying
form does not read as unqualified in my book. Now somewhere in here or the
remote past, I missed the intial furball. Probably best from the shots being fired
across bows here.
On the subject of FAST...if you are not planning on flying in waivered airspace,
what's the big deal? Is it striving for another level of expertise. Then the
answer is yes. Now saying that, I have flown with some good sticks since being
in the YAK community for the short life that I have had in theis community.
I have also had some people in this community scar me and Dude that is hard to
do. Over all anyone can have a bad day. My experience is that because the military
trained are trained to a different standard, they are at an advantage in
this environment. The civilian drivers can equal that but are starting way behind
the power curve. It will take them longer to start to see the sight pictures
for rejoins..ect. They can get there though. It all takes practice and more
practice. The military types start with a robust clue bag that is all.
Now giving each other a buz job with the V450's...just remember...the PK of terra
firma is always 1! You can only tie it!
