My comment (rings) was to try and help those in USA and others who have difficulty
obtaining parts, we use OEM parts.
cheers, mj

Please read below. All these people are volunteers and follow the best
American tradition of self help. The costs of the efforts that they made for
Katrina have pretty much used up funds that they have. My aircraft is called
the Russian Bear and I take whatever chance I can to put forward the great
work that they do. If you were looking for a way to contribute to Katrina
that would be direct and meaningful please take a look at the work that they
do. I a hurricane comes to your town you will be really pleased to see these
guys coming to get you.
Also, If you are able to help them in the future with transport to a
disaster zone please don't be shy the biggest cost they have is travel. They
get not 1c from the government.
Only to do with planes in that my plane is named after bear out of respect.

Gus,
Thought you would like to know that the last few years were not in vain and
that we are still at it. Hope you are aware that the Bear Search & Rescue
Foundation www.bearsearchandrescue.org established by the law firm of
Proskauer Rose in the name of America's most decorated rescue dog played a
key role in the rescue operations in Louisiana.
Our actions ultimately responsible for 11,000 people being alive in
Louisiana today. We have incredible shots of the first animal rescues and
human rescues using small boats. You may also enjoy knowing that the
Foundations last major course in New York Harbor for twenty six agencies
June 4-6 was "Responding to the Five Hundred Year Flood".
The Foundation deployed 27 teams (that it had funded or trained the last
four years) they averaged 220 rescues per team and hundreds of animals. The
special boat teams we led for the 3rd Brigade 82nd Airborne (with 45 boats
supplied by the Foundation) rescued just under 6000 people with boats and
boat crews provided by Bear Search & Rescue Foundation.
In all 11,000 people and hundreds of animals are alive today because of
the Foundation. We also started the policy of rescuing anything that lived.
You'll love the attached story and the second attachment with its simple
country lawyer quality that got around the whole FEMA system that minimizes
rescue. I gave orders that anything that lived be rescued!
The Foundation with the USCG started a program just before Katrina to
support local SAR teams around the country; it is called the Bear Boat
Program (Boat Emergency Action Response). It will provide boats and
coxswains from the USCGA to support on a consistent basis local SAR, Fire,
Police and EMS services. The plans now are for rapid response teams with
minimum of twenty inflatable boats in trailers ready to go and cached
supplies for two weeks to the scene of disasters.
What we did in Louisiana made all we did at the WTC like a pebble on the
beach, but it set the stage for this greater good.
When I called Gov Blanco of Louisiana office to deploy teams I gave my name,
rank, the units, it all meant nothing to her, then out of desperation I said
"do you remember Bear from the World Trade Center" and she said "I read the
book, I know who you are........how many units and when can they be here?"
I knew that Bear would become a legend, I wanted to turn that legend into a
legacy to keep people (and now animals) alive. Bear lives!

It is completely unscientific to compare the relative performance of
three different
aeroplanes chasing each other around the sky!
We have done proper back-to-back tests on an Su-26 with 400-hp, and
MTV-9-260-27
and MTV-9-260-29.
The tests were done on the same day; the same pilot; the same fuel load
AND a slight
correction for the temperature/pressure change while changing the prop
over.
The improvement for various parameters was between 6 percent and 14
percent - if
you would like specific figures, please let me know and we can e-mail
the table
directly - as this list does not accept tables!

Richard,
I have no doubt whatsoever that your scientific testing proved that the
-29 blade, on an SU-26, had superior performance compared to the -26
blade. If I flew an SU-26 I would want the -29 blade prop.
However, when three identical planes, with the same pilot/fuel loads,
fly side by side and each sets the same power setting (cruise, 80%, 100%
power with full throttle) and then all three planes have LESS THAN ONE
KNOT difference in speed, this "common sense" testing indicates that the
difference in the two different propeller blades (as it relates to
speed) is next to nothing -- for that type plane.
We were only interested in speed, not vertical performance. The local
MT dealer had told us the speed difference would be 10-15 mph better
with the -29 blades. We did the test not to disprove him, but rather,
because we hoped it was true and we intended to buy new -29 blade props.
We were disappointed when there was NO difference.
Again, I believe you proved the -29 blade superior on an SU-26. But on
a Yak-52TW, the difference in speed performance is not detectable. I
think any prop would be hard pressed to make a Yak-52 significantly
faster.
Best regards,
Steve Dalton

Steve,
It all boils down to the Clark Y airfoil. You can make rocks fly with
enough thrust.

I think you are giving the airfoil a bit too much credit in the drag
calculation. I would put my money on plain old parasitic drag in this case.
The Yak-52 IS the aerodynamic equivalent of a rock. That is part of its beauty.

Brian,
That is the way she was designed..to imulate the jet. She does a damned
good job of it too. Particularly in the way a turbo jet engine lags and
spools up ..not so with the fan jet engines. The wing loading is pretty
much on and as you say..pull the power and she drops like a rock. Have not
seen a T-37, F-4, F-4, F-15, or my love..F-16 win an glider
contest...neither will the 52!
But we were talking about Steve's TW with it's cute little fold all the

does not have the stellar dash or increased cruise speeds that one would
hope for in a XC aircraft. But, hey, I did not buy my YAK for an XC a/c.

I would question that logic. My L-29 was the next step up for the
trainees, and it glides rather well, and if you pull the power
back....nothing happens for a while. Jets as you well know, dont
behave at all like their piston bretheren when it comes to throttle
response. Our prop planes will accelerate/decelerate instantaniously
as compared to a jet. Flying formation in a jet I find, requires
slightly different throttle management technique.
I really doubt the reasoning for not using flush rivets was to
purposely induce drag. Most probably a financial decision.

I know. I like high-thrust, high-drag aircraft.
BTW, I have a friend who has dead-sticked an F-16 to a successful landing
after a massive turbine failure. Seems it glides well enough. The video
footage was pretty interesting. Someone in his squadron had a camera in hand
and heard the initial mayday. I am kind-of amazed it kept flying because there
was not much left of the ass end. His new callsign after that was "Smokey".

Parasitic drag doesn't always come from where you expect it to come from.
Clearly Craig is doing things the right way and leaving no tern unstoned.

I ordered new cowling rubber mounts from Mr. Sapp and they were not the style that
fit my CJ and the style I need is not available. I found a company that will
form new ones into the OE brackets. Aerofab Machining 651-257-8642. See

It seems that the RAF has the same difficulty justifying the Typhoon as the
USAF does with the YF-22.

If it's the old style insert type...I make my own by pressing a round punch through
1/2" rubber sheet and then pressing the lubed "donut" into the ring. For
a center, I use a piece of bushing stock for the pin to pass through.

Craig - any chance you have 2 extra of these fine fabrications you'd care to
sell? Here in Marin County, we are required to out-source all fab work-off
shore & its usually a 3 month process to have them pass our stringent
antinuclear & ecological requirements once complete.

Dav,
I believe Steve Dalton, Terry Slawinski were two of the ones on the winning team
(Northridge Raider--I believe). Scott Patterson, Roger Kemp, Ray Gage, and Shane
Golden made up the Snake team. I do not remember who was the last team was.
I have not had the chance to burn a second Viper video yet. Will get it done sometime

Talon,
Thanks for all you have done for the gang at SEM this past weekend! Have really
enjoyed the videos and the pictures. And no incrementing shots for future bribery...bummer!
No judges in compromising positions with bar maids or fighter pilots
being fighter pilots. Maybe next year... Had a blast ...reminded me of being
back on active duty without the next morning headache from Bat Hangings drinking
inverted Jeremiah Weed shooters or Combat Crud! Oh well something happened
along the way. Guess I got older, got promoted, and now have to be the adult
supervisor! Bummer...it was so much fun to be a Lt/ young Capt. where they
not only forgave you for being young and stupid, it was expected!
Maybe next year, The Snakes will not be denied the formation win they so richly
deserved this time! After all Northeast Raiders will be short one of their team
members and the Snakes will have practiced togather at least once before the
next fly-in!
