Hi Craig,
Have you had a chance to see what kinda difference it makes? We're
planning to do the right side one and also the circular panel on the
bottom where the ADF antenna used to be. We can get a fair amount of
louvers there...and it's pretty well out of sight...
I know Rich T. down in AZ has had good success with the louvers. He
now needs a light in the cockpit to tell him when his smoke is
on....'cuz in S&L flight he gets zero smoke in the cockpit...

Barry,
Yes it helps some but I'm not through yet. Adding 3" to the exhaust stacks moved
a lot of the oily stuff down below the underside. Lots cleaner down there now
but still some CO in the rear cockpit., perhaps through wheel wells. A rear
cockpit vent will help in cruise but not much will help when flying with any
AOA.

Craig,
You are just the guy to try this, how about taking the exhaust out mid stack
so that it goes over the wing ?
Plus it would look mondo cool at night with all those flames visible from
the cockpit rather than wasted out of the pilots sight :)))

Fish,
You obviously are letting the mundane things in life like working for a
living get in the way of your true calling. Collecting aviation
memorabelia. Yep, I'm pretty good at putting wings on dollars and having
them fly away from me!
Doc
PS. I did forget one book...Black Airman. Signed by most of the living
Tuskegee Airmen. I have an advantage on that one...Tuskegee is about 40
miles east of me and they have an Annual fly-in at Molton Field to honor
them. We usually send a jet over each year and sometimes we stop. Benjamin
O's son is our ANG CC. He tells some great stories of growing up in his
shadow. In another of those converting $$ to air, I had the pleasure of
arranging his supper (and an ontorage of generals) on my tab at the Capital
City club when he was in town to give a talk to the Air War College.
Hum...that reminds me...I have never been paid back for that! Hum,,,how
does a 0-6 remind a 4 star that he still owes me for supper??? Guess that
will just have to be a write off.
Like I said $$$ to air.

I understand from Dug that he is equally impressed with a Pan Amer=B9s ability
to remain standing after mucho imbibing!
It=B9s good to have such folk as neighbors!
You will also be pleased to hear that the Red Star Pilots were well
represented this weekend at the BAMA Jet Blast over in Gadsden AL. Gabby
managed to go 3 and 0 against another L39 with a Navy and Airforce crew in
some 1v1 neutrals (of course the Navy and Airforce guys were probably
arguing over tactics while I was just along for the ride as Gabby=B9s GIB!)
You should have seen their faces in the debrief!
I hope the hurricane has missed you.

Sorry Doc, I just had to throw in a post today. There are many of us that
just lurk out here on the list and rarely add our two cents. But let's face
it, this list is 25% useful information from people like Richard Goode, Mark
Jefferies, Mark Bitterlich, Doug Sapp, Jill G, Jeff L, Brian Lloyd and a few
others and the rest is nothing more than B.S and is of entertainment value
only. Never boring, always entertaining. And now that we are at the point
of listing our personal libraries, I just couldn't help it. Sorry.
By the way, you can keep your wingman, I know that's a special bond with air
force types. Us Marines are looking for your sisters.

Regardless of your personal point of view, comments like this seem a bit harsh
for a public forum and offend the female pilots and your fellow RPA members...OOPS,
I mean us fat, ugly bitches.

Actually it goes..as 2...I got the fat ugly bitch...you want another BEER?

Us Marines are looking for your sisters.

that_mail@yahoo.com writes: "I'm seriously considering adding nitrox
injection to my M-14"
In truth I think Nitrous Oxide is great stuff (I'm just not good enough to
use it properly). By introducing it into any combustion engine you will get
a dramatic increase in generated power due to:
1. The cooling effect of the expanding gas in the combustion chamber.
2. The release of oxygen as it is being burnt.
Of the two, NUMBER 2 is the biggest concern. As I am sure you know, maximum
horsepower is achieved at a certain fuel to air RATIO. When running
Nitrous, you have to dramatically increase the amount of fuel you introduce
to the engine at exactly the same time due to the increase in oxygen that
the burning Nitrous Oxide causes. In fact, you really want to introduce the
fuel just a tiny bit earlier than the nitrous.
Thus in a typical system, you have two sets of control solenoids. One for
the nitrous, and one for the fuel that you are going to pump into the engine
as well. I am leaving out several other considerations that also must be
taken care of such as nitrous tank temperature control, and line venting
before use, etc.
The fact is this... if for any reason WHAT-SO-EVER, you run into a problem
with fuel delivery when the nitrous is turned on, your engine will melt.
The mixture goes instantly and very violently lean. The top of the pistons
melt. The engine comes apart. It is not a slow reaction, it is an
explosion.
That said, if you are bent on experimenting with an M14P running nitrous,
yes... of course it can be done. Since you are already running a pressure
carb., the introduction of the nitrous and the additional fuel become
problematical. Even if you pull it off, you are not going to be able to
control engine RPM without a special prop unless you are going straight up.
As a matter of fact, this is where it has been used before on a Pitts
Special. I would suggest that you investigate the new fuel injection system
the Russians are working with, as it would be a much more simple matter to
reprogram the gate opening time width(s) on a port injected electronic fuel
control system, than it would be trying to build a spray system to mount
in-between the existing carb. and the throat of the induction system, that
then feeds into a BLOWER for Heavens Sake !!!!
Another little tidbit... if you for any reason develop a backfire when on
nitrous.... it's another case of "Good bye Engine" and everyone within miles
saying: DANG, I WISH I HAD A CAMERA WHEN IT DID THAT!!!!
You are walking in an area that few have ever contemplated. Good luck.
Hope you have one TON of cash... you are going to need it. Forget the
ejection seat... start thinking of some steel plate between you and the
engine. Also be aware that most folks that run Nitrous Oxide pull every
single spark plug after every single application. They "tune" the fuel
delivery based on density altitude, and what the plugs look like after each
run. If I wanted more power from an M-14, I would investigate one or both of
two different methods.
1. I would redesign the blower, or pay to have it done, and then increase
boost a few more inches.
2. I would have pistons custom made and increase the compression ratio by
one full point.
With a better oil cooler, I suspect the M-14 can handle 475 horsepower all
day long on 100LL fuel. Especially of you come back just a tiny bit on the
RPM. In any case, if money was not an issue, that is the approach I would
take..... because you don't get to make ANY mistakes when running nitrous.
NONE. ZERO. ZIP. NADA.
I hope I have talked you out of this. If not, then good luck and may God be
with you.

Mark:
I read Yak-list discussions on matronics server and a few days ago noticed
this expression :
"having worked on engines running nitrous oxide in drag
car motors... which is why ... by the bye... I will never use that
junk in
any engine I run."
If I had any experience with nitrox I wouldn't be writing this message. But
your
remark is the first emphatically negative opinion I stumbled upon (may be I
haven't
researched the topic thoroughly yet).
Anyway, I'm seriously considering adding nitrox injection to my M-14. I'm
aware that
I will need a stronger gearbox and probably a different prop. After
consulting with
the people who designed it I can reasonably expect that the cylinders should
hold.
My concern is a long-term effect on pistons, rings, valves etc. And for that
I would
really appreciate your opinion - do you think I should buy ejection seat
first ?

Ladies & Gents,
Excuse my newness to the airplane, but what specifically happens with both
gear handles in the neutral position?
