When the lineman asks "What kind of airplane is this?" when he's done
putting fuel in your plane... triple check to make sure that the fuel
covers are on properly.
Sigh! :-)

The switch used with the KR-87 is a microswitch with a vane on it that sticks
out into the slipstream from the fuselage. When the aircraft is moving fast
enough it folds backward. You could do the same thing with a stall warning
vane mounted perpendicularly to the fuselage to accomplish the same thing and
it would be more rugged and more readily available.

Jon,
That's why I *always* double-check everything and usually do my own fueling. Another
thing to look for: make sure that fuel truck says "100LL" or "Mogas" and
not the stuff that goes into lanterns or those funny looking ramp heaters with
wings.
Not that I EVER screw up...but, I did make an extra set of fuel covers that will
go with the airplane to the paint shop.

I prefer to have them come out to refuel it when I am there. I generally will fuel
it myself.

Losing fuel covers on a CJ6A, like gear-up landings, come under the heading of:
"Those who have and those who will.".
Remember, a preflight walk-around inspection is your friend.
And, yes, I have lost a fuel cover and I have tried to retract the gear on the
ground (saved by the slide lock).
The attempted gear-retraction on the ground happened at OSH in 1999 (if I recall
the year properly). It was the year that Pappy, Batman, and I represented the
Red Star community in the Warbird fly-over. When we taxied clear of the runway
I was so worried about timing the flap retraction so we would "look cool" that
I grabbed the gear lever by brain-fart. How can one grab the gear lever when
trying to retract the flaps? I haven't a clue. I wouldn't think it possible
but Pappy did it and so did I. My only saving grace was my habitual use of the
slide lock when the gear is down.
It only has to happen to you once to put the fear into you.

When refueling, I tell the lineperson "you do the fuel, I'll do the
caps and covers...." I remove them for them, get out of the way,
and then
put them back on when fueling is complete, this gives me a chance to
check the physical fuel level, as well as make sure I put the caps and
covers on correctly..... or at least usually I do it correctly!
'cuz 2 years ago I did lose a cover on take off!!!

Jon, Craig,
If you have not done it already, cut the chains on the covers. The chains
will not (as some of us have seen) stop the cover from leaving the area,
they will (as I have seen) cause the errant cover beat the unholy crap out
of your 10K plus paint job before they do finally twist themselves off and
go away. It's bad enough to have to call me to ask for a replacement and
pay $45.00 (one hour shop time) to build you a new cover, but it makes it
doubly bad when you have to touch up your new paint also.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

I had one cover with chain, on the other with chain off. I had a line
boy refuel my airplane at MCO. Halfway home I noticed I was missing a
fuel cover, fortunately it was the one with chain off.

Paint yes, but not just yet. I'm doing some metal work first, there will be 2 cowls
to paint: the stock one and the "improved efficiency" cowl. (we don't say
'speed' anymore). Before any painting happens I need to master the English Wheel
and pay for an Alaska Cruise for my CJ's Co-owner and mother of my children.
