Dear Matt,
Just to let you know that although I have only been on the yak-list for a
month or so, I've sent in my contribution (as you know via mail). I've gained
so much more through the wisdom and camaraderie here. The Yak-List has also become
an early morning ritual with a cup of coffee for me.
My recently purchased CJ6 is still in the hanger in Portland, Oregon waiting
for it's annual and pre-purchase inspection. Hal (Batman) introduced me to
his fine CJ mechanic and builder, so it may take awhile to squeeze me in, but
he's worth it. Hal is one of several of your members that went above and beyond
to make sure that I had the resources I needed to make the right decision.
While we're at it, I still need to purchase two parachutes. The "Strong" line
has been recommended. I am also tall at nearly 6 feet and my back complains
if I sit too long. The ability to have a chute that isn't too bulky to permit
an easy egress from the cockpit if need be would be a factor as well. ( I don't
ask for much do I?)
Any suggestions from "the breakfast club"?
Many thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to all

Ok your wallet is going to wince, but for the money you just can't
beat the Butler chutes (www.butlerparachutes.com) for comfort. Batman
turned me one to this chute and me and my butt are forever grateful.
Another factor is these chutes are custom fitted to you and since you
are getting a CJ you will get a seat pack designed for the CJ seat
pan and you can order with a lumbar support.

Steve Fox said it pretty well. The Butler 'chutes are the "Rolls
Royce" of 'chutes.
But you should also contact Alan Silver of Silver Parachute Sales &
Service. Alan always gives a fantastic emergency egress talk at Red
Star events and has always given me very good service. He sells the
"Softie" 'chutes.
Here is his web site: http://www.pia.com/silver/
I was very happy with my "Softie" 'chute especially with the
optional temper-foam cushion for my delicate derierre. And Alan's
service is second to none.

Val,
Butler is a good chute for sure. Expensive though. The Strong chute with the "NASA
foam" 2'' cushion does me just fine. I have two of them. After 2 hours of
Yakovating on a XC, my right knee and rear have had it (along with my F-16 trained
bladder), so it's time to land.

All of the chutes on the market have a good reputation. I chose Strong after
trying Butler and National for size at Sun n Fun. Strong fitted my deformed frame
the best; the same may not be true for you. Also recommend a chat with Alan
Silver; a tremendous resource.

Both chutes that has been recommend are good. One thing you really want to
check with any of them is their porosity. I once bought two very nice used
seat pack chutes. Some time later, my local packer told me when she returned
them after repacking, "Jim, if you have to jump in these chutes, make sure
you land in the trees, otherwise you're going to break you ankles." She
wasn't selling parachutes, so I listened and learned. The porosity is different
on canopies. Your weight (tall slim blond, Nordic goddess that you are.) has
to be taken into account. My 215 lbs would have had me rocketing under a
full canopy to earth with bone crushing result. I ended up buying Strongs at
OSH one year and one of the questions first asked me was my weight. When
buying used chutes this is often times over looked by the purchasers.

Be fore you buy you need/should talk with Alan Silver. I am 6 ft 1 inch and
we use Strong
chutes WITH Oregon Aero foam in the cushions and a custom pad/filler for the
front seat
to keep my behind from sitting on the back edge of the chute. Also because
of my height
I have the MALCOM hood type canopy this really helps when I have a helmet
on. Also I
would buy the heavy capacity chutes a lite weight person will come down
slower, but
if you have a large ( over weight) GIB like me or pappy we will not break
any thing.
If we can be of help please call or e-mail us.

Val,
To get an idea of what's available in parachutes, pay a visit to your
local sky dive club and talk to the "Rigger' or "packer". Make it clear
to him that you are not a sport jumper You don't want the jumper's type
chute but you decide whether you want a seat pack or a back pack for your
CJ. I use a seat pack in the 50; I suspect you will find this suitable
for your needs . He'll know what's available locally and can keep an eye
out for the best chute/s for the money. Remember, 1) back packs push
you closer to the rudder pedals and are sometimes cramped for the long
legged . 2) The approved exit strategy for leaving the airplane, first,
grab your pocketbook, it's got your makeup kit you know, unfasten your
harness, roll inverted and kick clear of the aircraft. Tell your
passenger you're going for help, this will keep him quiet for a few more
seconds.
Warm Regards,
Cliff

Me and my CJ will be giving a lots of rides tomorrow but she's up it.
So to all my aviation friends on this list. Happy Thanksgiving and I hope

I think the pick-up in spam is a result of the start of the holiday
shopping season. Somebody fired the starting gun on Wednesday... big
increase in spam since then. Or, somebody's got a new flavor of spam out
that the filter's haven't been updated to catch -- part of the "arms
race"; but if I were a spam king and going to try and make a run on the
filters, I'd do it to correspond to t-day.
