Does anyone have a (CJ) ZY-1500 voltage regulator lying around after converting to the B&C conversion? If so, I could use it to replace the one I have "tweeked" way out of whack. Craig Payne

Christmas Day I just decided to fly to Miami from Sacramento and return. I managed to spend part of Christmas day with family in Austin, TX. We hit Baton Rouge, JAX, and Opa Locka (where I had to replace the vacuum pump on the left engine). I got the rest of my stuff, mostly tools, from the boat and then went back to Austin where all my belongings have been waiting for six months. Somehow it all managed to fit in the Aztec with some room left over! I had 700 lbs of stuff, two people, and full tanks. It took a pickup truck to carry the stuff out to the plane. The Aztec certainly deserves its moniker "Aztruck". You know, fuel prices have gone absolutely crazy. When going cross-country these days you need to check fuel prices. I saw prices ranging from $2.65 to $5.10 per gallon. By using AirNav (http://www.airnav.com) I was able to arrange my stops to average about $3.10 for fuel. And at 22gph it makes a big difference. For example, Austin Bergstrom has fuel for $4.65. 20 nm away at Austin Lakeway it was $2.99. That one stop saves the cost of lodging and food for the whole day. Anyway, it was a great trip with beautiful weather. The only exception was California. What's up with that? Anyway, I needed it. It was a good way to end 2005 and begin 2006. My new (to me) 1993 Yak-52 had never had the gear actuators overhauled. I can kind of see why; it's a nasty job to remove and install them. To avoid that area for a while I replaced the hoses at the same time. Doug Sapp made beautiful new ones, even the oddball one with the 180 degree fitting. Fast turnaround and very reasonably priced too. Mike Bell Yak-52 N444JA Elk Grove, CA yakflyr@comcast.net My new (to me) 1993 Yak-52 had never had the gear actuators overhauled. Subject: Winterization/FOD Kit
Just completed the installation of the Doug Sap "Winterization/FOD" kit. The installation was easy and looks good and is certainly reasonably priced. Flying here in Arizona is 78 degrees today in the Valley; but will be 10 degrees up on the Rim tomorrow morning at 8:00 A.M. I expect the Kit to allow an easy closure of the air supply to the oil cooler when I need it and an easy opening of the air supply when back near sea level. Removal of the Door assembly will take less than one minute when our "harsh" winter is over. rb --------------------------------- Ring in the New Year with Photo Calendars. Subject: Yak 52 Hose Source
Mike, Many thanks for the kind words. I was amazed to discover how close in length the CJ hoses were in comparison to the 52 hoses. In every instance all that needed to be done was to shorten the CJ hose to the proper length as fitting size was exactly the same. I have set up a "assembly and test" bench where I can assemble hoses and overhaul gear retract actuators and check them for leaks with high pressure air. As the price of replacement actuators goes up it makes more and more sense to overhaul instead of buying new. In the actuators that I have overhauled (over 20 now) the number one problem has been paint and debris being pulled back into the cly via the ram which damages the 0 rings causing the unit to leak. So if you paint your actuators do so with them in the retracted position or mask off the ram very carefully. Don't gob a bunch of grease on the ram thinking you are doing it a favor, you are not, doing this will simply give the dirt and junk a place to hide until it finally gets pulled inside by the retract action of the ram. The second biggest cause of failure is caused by water in the air system which causes rust on the cly wall which in time either abraids the 0 rings or causes so much pitting that the 0 ring cannot do its job. When this happens you have big trouble because the actuator is not rebuildable. If you maintain the desiccant filter and oil the pneumatic system at the proper intervals and you will minimize this (and many other) problems.
