I agree with you. It is the old "pitch plus power equals performance"
thing. If you know the power setting that yields a particular
performance, you are going to be there whether or not you use the ASI. I
teach my students to find out what power settings are correct for
various configurations and then the airspeed just falls into place. It
also lowers workload.
Other than a quick glance to make sure I am at gear and flap speed, I
know I really don't use the ASI much in the pattern.
But I did use my AoA a LOT when I had it. I probably need to figure out
how I am going to get one in the Project.

Basically a woman in England is building a MkII Spitfire in her garage and
is looking for space. Now it's not that we British are all crazy but some
things just have to be done regardless of the consequences. Please send this
around it would be great to see her succeed. This would make a great article
for Warbirds magazine.

RAF Conningsby which is the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
On the subject of the Battle of Britain I was bought, in the US for
Christmas a special edition of the Movie. It is a two disc set the movie and
extras. The movie is awesome anyway but the second disk justifies the cost
on it's own. I describes how the flying sequences were done. During the
filming the collected aircraft for the shooting was the 35th largest
airforce in the world. The really sad part is that given modern movie making
techniques a film like this will never be made again with real fire
breathing aircraft. Even if you already have a copy of the movie get the
special edition just for the documentaries, if you don't have a copy of THE
BEST FLYING MOVIE EVERY MADE, shame on you...
Another interesting fact from the extras was that all the actors were paid
the same low daily rate and they were lining up for a part as they all felt
that it was important to make the film. Also Pappy they used a B-25 as the
camera ship and they had it painted up in all sorts of psycadelic colors to
avoid collision, but hey it was the sixties :)))

Ben,
Great scenes in that movie also, even more amazing as they had hardly any

Guys in ZA,
I have a friend who is visiting your fine county, he is a pilot in training
and an all round good egg. He has rented a King Air for a family trip but
would really enjoy the REAL South African flying experience. Obviously he
would cover any costs and whoever does it I would be happy to reciprocate
with a fly around Manhattan if you are in the area. He is going to North
Durban, any offers ?

Gus;
Thanks for all that. I'll buddy up with anyone who would like to. Joe
(Felix) Wilkins (took some dual from me) has done a few contests and one in my
Yak-55 (and trophied!) when his -52 was "new asphalted" into his hangar last
year. I'm working on the rest of the Colorado Yak Pac. Tumbled with Allen
Tinnes... he won a trophy (I think) at LAA last year in Primary. Even if he did
cause a little consternation when he left (flew to the boonies) to get some
more practice time after the contest began. A faux pas. We all love you
Allen.
I have been invited to practice formation, I accepted, you guys have cahones
(sp? gonads...you know) the size of watermelons. It scares me to see
airplanes that close when they are on the ground and not tied down...I respect
what you all do, it is real pretty - please try adding the last dimension - go
vertical - have more fun - be safe and get to laugh at me when I attempt to
join a formation.
BTW, you can do even Sportsman @82% :0)
Respectfully, Rick b

OK folks it is the off season and I am sure that you are all getting your
annual done in preparation for the next flying season.
So what are you going to do next year ?
Why not SERIOUSLY consider taking that great red plane of yours to an
aerobatics contest as either a competitor of volunteer ?
In an attempt to spike your interest I have included this years primary
knowns from IAC
<<primary.pdf>>
Basically, for those that don't yet read Aresti (see
_http://www.mini-iac.com/Portals/57ad7180-c5e7-49f5-b282-c6475cdb7ee7/ARESTI-DICTIONARY.pdf_
(http://www.mini-iac.com/Portals/57ad7180-c5e7-49f5-b282-c6475cdb7ee7/ARESTI-DICTIONARY
.pdf) ) , it is
1. A one turn spin.
2. A loop.
3. Half Cuban 8.
4. Roll.
5. 90 Deg turn.
All stuff you guys probably do on a Sunday afternoon, why not jump in.
Nobody expects you to be a Rick Basiliere from day one (sorry Rick) the best bit
about a competition is that you first off compete against yourself and then
against others.
And hey there is no requirement to wear a flight suit, (comment for Frank
and Brian :)) ) infact I don't see a reg that stops you from doing it in the
buff if you wish. I know that there are a few aerobatic lurkers on the list so
why not make this the year you make the leap, literally, into aerobatics,
common you know you want to..........
Even if you decide to just see what goes on find out where the contests are
from the iac web site _www.iac.org_ (mip://03529d68/www.iac.org)
Also if you are experienced why not offer to be a "buddy" for someone who
wants to start.
And for those that refuse to fly unless it is in a pack, you can fly to the
contest together (TONGUE PLANTED RIGHT INTO MY CHEEK).

Gerry Beck in Whapeton, ND, has tooling to build P-51A and P-51B
airframes. He was thinking of making a fast-build kit that would be 100%
faithful to the North American P-51A using a new old-stock Allison
engine. If one went that route it would be licensed as
Experimental/amateur-built instead of Experimental/exhibition.
Something to think about if you want the ultimate home-built.

A number of years ago I tried platinum center electrode plugs in my daily
driver and was disappointed with the quick wear of the center, platinum
electrode. It wore faster than the relativly large steel center electrode of
regular plugs. Some of you guys are using the platinum tipped plugs with
success. Which plug are you using and what is the manufacturer and part
number?
Thanks

Too bad he did not do the quick built kit. Not sure he would have made
money on it though.

Taken directly from their web site -
"27.12.05
Russia and China combine efforts in civil aviation
A Russian-China subcommittee session on cooperation in civil aviation took
place on 12-13 December of 2005 in Peking. The subcommittee hadn't been
assembled for the last eight years so it was enthusiastically welcomed by
the participants. The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of
Industry and Energetic, Mr. A.Reus.
The resulting approved document reflects the tendency of both sides to join
their efforts in the field of new aviation technologies. The sides selected
the primary trainer project of Yak-152 type as a new common aircraft
development program. The sides have agreed to jointly develop, fabricate,
test, certify and produce the aircraft.
The next session of the subcommittee is appointed on July-August of 2006 in
Moscow."
