Kelly, Bill Blackwell has a filter sys he installs on the extreme right side
of the firewall, about even with the start air solenoid, or just slightly above
that level. I have had it on my CJ for about 350 hrs, and it works very well..
I do not remember the brand, but if you contacted Bill he could tell you who
manfactures it, it is an industrial unit that has a screw on oil filter...
if you need I could take a picture of the unit installed on my CJ and send it
to you.. would be a few days befroe I could do that for you... Gary Gabbard

Subject: | CJ6A - overvoltage module update |
Bob is putting together a kit for the over-voltage protection module and
had a question that I thought I would direct to all of you.
The module has two status lamps, one for low-voltage, one for
over-voltage trip, and a test/reset button. Would those of you who are
interested in this module please let me know if you would like the kit
to include a labeled placard along with the bulb holders, bulbs, and the
push-to-test/reset button.
I have attached a PDF of what the placard would look like.
BTW, the largest part is the relay. The actual circuit module is only
about twice the size of the DB-9 connector used for all the wiring. (A
DB-9 connector is the type used on PC serial ports in case you are
wondering how big that is.)
I still need to find a CJ6A with a stock generator here in central
California to use as a test bed. The wiring changes are very small, just
get power from the bus and break the field wire somewhere to insert the
relay. If you don't want to keep the module for some reason it would
only require one splice to put everything back the way it was.
BTW, Bob will not release the kit until it has been flight-tested. He
doesn't believe in "vaporware" products that promise and then don't deliver.

Add to this series of horrific Bureaucratic bullying the fact that we are now in
the process of fighting a huge conglomerate of energy companies backed by the
U.S. Government here in Utah.
Why? Because they want to import hundreds of thousands of pounds of nuclear waste
from not only other states, but from Japan to store it 60 miles upwind of Salt
Lake City, Utah. It's all obviously pork belly politics and payoffs.
What makes it worse is the fact that these storage facilities aren't exactly well
contained or secure. This also makes our City a more attractive site for potential
terrorist activity.
They also want to transport it through our populated areas on a regular basis via
rail line and truck.
The good news is that there has been quite a public outcry here and at least our
local politicians have changed their tune. Since the Feds. are all for the energy
companies making lots of money importing this stuff and storing it in our
back yard, we're refusing the right to build the rail lines necessary to do
this over other lands.
Point being. We must pick our battles carefully, because the ones that we pick,
we must be determined to win at all costs. In order to do this we must band
together as a large and powerful group and communicate. I think that we have that
through AOPA, the EAA, etc.
Hopefully, the victims of this radon fiasco can use some of this in support of
their cases. Can we take up a collection (all groups) for their legal defense
fund?

It is done more now than in the past because of the rising cost of the
individual gill shutters has made the rather high price of the titanium iris
system more in line. I have brought in 6 sets so far and all were installed
on CJ6's. I have no stock right now but have some on order and should see
them in 60 days or so. You have a CJ, or 52 or? Contact me off list if you

Great progress. I hope you can find someone in your area to with a stock
generator control CJ to help out with the testing.
Am I correct in assuming the indicator panel is separate from the actual
unit? If so I would personally not require that since I have a stock of MS
style PTT warning lights, switches and facilities for placard manufacture.
All I would need is instructions to hook it all up.
If you can give exact dimensions for the placard I will make some for you at
no charge. These would be made from 1/32" or .020" engraving plastic and I
will install attaching adhesive tape.

You know, one nice thing about nuclear "waste" is that about 99% of the
energy is still in it. In 20-50 years it might be nice to have all that
stored energy ready to recycle and not have to go to some other country
to buy it again. Think "energy independence".
Analogy: do you ever play the game of "Hearts"? The Queen of Spades is a
bad thing to have. Some people pass it away at the beginning but my
strategy is to keep it in order to have control over who gets it instead
of me. I would much rather have the nuclear waste under our control than
someone else's. I wouldn't even mind living next to it.

Uh, is this an example of the, "I don't need to outrun the bear; I only
need to outrun you;" attitude? We want to make sure it is someone else's
city that is more attractive to terrorists in order to feel safe?
I prefer the, "catch them, shoot them, drop their bodies in a ditch and
throw dirt on them," approach to dealing with terrorists instead of
running, hiding, or pretending that we are actually dealing with
terrorist effectively. (The latter is the Bush administration's approach.)

How often do the rail and truck lines transport chemicals that would
have a much more immediate affect on you should they be released? A tank
of chlorine gas is a LOT more dangerous to you than a whole load of
spent nuclear fuel rods dumped right on your doorstep. It is a good idea
to understand the real threat.
What is it about radioactive material that makes people go crazy-stupid?
Case in point, how many people died as a result of the melt-down at
Three Mile Island? How many people died as a result of the Chernobyl
disaster? And how many died as a result of the chemical release in
Bhopal, India? The Bhopal chemical release was a *much* bigger disaster.

Sorry Val, I guess I just don't see the nuclear waste problem the same
way you do. I guess I don't see the terrorist problem the way many
people do. Heck, I am a lot more afraid of local gang-bangers than I am
of terrorists.

NIMBY! Heck, I would like to own all that nuclear waste. Send it to me!
I could reprocess it into usable fuel. Oh yeah, I forgot: DOE, EPA, DHS,

This is sensible. OTOH, are you ready for the fight? You are going to be
attacking bureaucrats on their home turf. And there are a lot of them
who are strongly motivated by the billions of our tax dollars to which
they believe they are entitled -- and which they already have.
Remember how the FAA reacted during the Bob Hoover fiasco? Even though
it was absolutely clear that the guys who yanked Hoover's medical were
100% wrong, the FAA never stopped backing their own people. Think about
it. You are talking about one long, painful, and expensive fight.
And what do you do if you lose in the courts? What is your backup plan?
Do we just then knuckle under? The alternative to that is pretty
sobering. What are *you* prepared to do?

Yes. The module itself is smaller than 1" square. The relay, its socket,

Well, Bob is kitting up the whole thing so it comes with all parts and
instructions. He is aware that the CJ6A already has a low-voltage
indicator (the red "generator" light) but he also plans to use this
module for other aircraft. You probably ought to make your offer
directly to Bob ("nuckollsr at cox dot net").
So I do need a good idea as to the desirability of the "control panel".

Steve-
After losing one hinge, and seeing numerous others failing, we had an
identical hinge/bracket machined from a more substantial aluminum alloy. I believe
this was done on a computerized system, making dublication relatively easy.
The owner of the aircraft (N122FS) has since put it up for sale, so I have
no RECENT feedback on the durability of the new hinges. They worked well for
the last 30 hours or so while I was flying the aircraft.

I also use RT for a couple of projects. One for my formation flying club
the Beech Boys (FFI group of Bonanza's) and the other for an Angel Flight
Painting. I have been really happy with him and would recommend him to anyone

Subject: Yak-List: CJ6A - overvoltage module update
Bob is putting together a kit for the over-voltage protection module and had
a question that I thought I would direct to all of you.
The module has two status lamps, one for low-voltage, one for over-voltage
trip, and a test/reset button. Would those of you who are interested in this
module please let me know if you would like the kit to include a labeled
placard along with the bulb holders, bulbs, and the push-to-test/reset
button.
I have attached a PDF of what the placard would look like.
BTW, the largest part is the relay. The actual circuit module is only about
twice the size of the DB-9 connector used for all the wiring. (A DB-9
connector is the type used on PC serial ports in case you are wondering how
big that is.)
I still need to find a CJ6A with a stock generator here in central
California to use as a test bed. The wiring changes are very small, just get
power from the bus and break the field wire somewhere to insert the relay.
If you don't want to keep the module for some reason it would only require
one splice to put everything back the way it was.
BTW, Bob will not release the kit until it has been flight-tested. He
doesn't believe in "vaporware" products that promise and then don't deliver.

OK, there was talk about how to protect ourselves from overzealous
governmental officials. As I read it, the law that protects us and makes
it unlawful for a government agent to deprive us of our rights "under
color of law" is Title 18, U.S.C., Section 242, "Deprivation of Rights
Under Color of Law".
The FBI web site
(http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cid/civilrights/statutes.htm#section242)
says this about the law:
"This statute makes it a crime for any person acting under color of law,
statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom to willfully deprive or cause
to be deprived from any person those rights, privileges, or immunities
secured or protected by the Constitution and laws of the U.S.
This law further prohibits a person acting under color of law, statute,
ordinance, regulation or custom to willfully subject or cause to be
subjected any person to different punishments, pains, or penalties, than
those prescribed for punishment of citizens on account of such person
being an alien or by reason of his/her color or race.
Acts under "color of any law" include acts not only done by federal,
state, or local officials within the bounds or limits of their lawful
authority, but also acts done without and beyond the bounds of their
lawful authority; provided that, in order for unlawful acts of any
official to be done under "color of any law," the unlawful acts must be
done while such official is purporting or pretending to act in the
performance of his/her official duties. This definition includes, in
addition to law enforcement officials, individuals such as Mayors,
Council persons, Judges, Nursing Home Proprietors, Security Guards,
etc., persons who are bound by laws, statutes ordinances, or customs.
Punishment varies from a fine or imprisonment of up to one year, or
both, and if bodily injury results or if such acts include the use,
attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or
fire shall be fined or imprisoned up to ten years or both, and if death
results, or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap,
aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse,
or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned
for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death."
The key phrase here is in the third paragraph where it states, "...but
also acts done without and beyond the bounds of their lawful authority..."
The problem one is going to face in court is to get the court to agree
that the federal agent has overstepped his/her bounds when the
definitions and limits are not clearly defined. He/she could argue that
they are operating on good-faith and being conservative in the
interpretation in order to protect the public welfare. Given that almost
no one understands radioactivity and a large portion of the population
reacts in a mindless panic when radioactivity is mentioned, it is going
to be darned difficult to get a conviction on this basis.
OTOH, if one can make a big enough stink, bureaucratic agencies have
been known to throw their own to the wolves to save the skin of the rest
of the people involved. (Example: FBI agent Lon Horiuchi in the Ruby
Ridge shootings.) If you can make this happen enough times perhaps
government employees will start to run for cover and try not to stick
their necks out. That might result in them leaving us alone.
Regardless, this is a very difficult problem. We are reaching a point
where we are going to have to seriously fight back or give in forever.
My belief is that appeasement does not work. Neither does "staying under
the RADAR."
But that is just my opinion.
I wonder if we can somehow get them declared as terrorists. That would
simplify things a LOT.

Mark,
I have an Iris setup on my Yak-50. Main reason is the airplane did not come with
the gills when I bought it. I wanted something so I could control the temps
and decided on the Iris. It has quite a few less parts and in the long run, was
cheaper. I DO NOT have the titanium Iris. Mine are stainless steel.
I am still working on a way to "control" them as they are fixed right now. My temps
are right where they should be. The only thing I deal with is longer warm
up times.
Something else to think about. The gills add structure to the engine cowling where
the Iris does not. Mark Bitterlich can add more to this. I have not had any
issues with it so far but have quite a bit less time without the gills than
Mark does. Mine is ROCK solid without the gills but I am not under the impression
that that will remain true and am taking steps to prevent that.
As to Dennis's question why, I think it is a simpler system with less parts. It
may also be cheaper. Dennis or Doug can answer that question though..
