You can apply to your FSDO to give a waiver that will allow instruction for
compensation for check out in type to licensed pilots. Aerobatics are part
of the flight manuals for Yaks and I presume CJ's and certainly for SU-29's.
Therefore a competent check out would include those aerobatics. First you
probably should be a flight instructor or recognized by your FSDO as one
competent to give check outs in that particular make and model.

I am quite interested in this topic as well. My problem is that I am
deathly afraid of asking anything of the FAA that might involve their
use of the word "no" as, once that word has been uttered, it is
virtually impossible to get them to use the word "yes" WRT the same topic.
So, how *does* one manage to use a CJ6A or Yak-52 for aerobatic training?
BTW, I looked in the idea of creating a club but was shot down on the
insurance front if there are more than 4 people in the "club".

To all my fellow stupid bowlers and the great unwashed.
El Supremo wishes you to gather around the "screen of enlightenment"
and bear witness to this magnificent vision before you. No, not your
reflection in the screen, monkey breath, the attachment. Yes, it is once
again time to prepare ourselves to place our bodies around the old oak tree
and listen to the melodic tones of "his chiefness", GREG DUNGAN.
He has promised El Supremo that this year his briefing will last, sadly,
only 3 hours, but the unedited, directors cut will be available on an
autographed CD at the registration booth. No pushing please, there will be
enough for everyone.
Our gracious hosts at the "Flying W" have agreed to allow us to hold, yet
another magnificent outing, at their more than average facility. We have
scheduled this event for July 13th through the 16th. Please advise all your
fellow aviators of these very important dates and inform them that all
participants this year will be required to use some sort of "flying
machine". We realize this may cause a hardship on some of our
"less fortunates" but El Supremo has spoken... So it is written, so it
shall be.
Remember my children, February 14th will soon be upon us. I am thinking this
would be an excellent occasion for my flock to shower the"magnificent
personage" of my Being, with expressions of your undying love and affection.
El Supremo finds that money generally makes the most lasting impression, but
let your heart be your guide. Just a thought.
My fingers grow weary.

This has nothing to do with Yaks directly but many of you were at
Spencer several years ago where my GIB was my youngest son, Seth, who
was 12-years-old at that time. You also may remember his penchant for
operating my CJ6A from the back seat while doing his best to maintain
+6G in all maneuvers. (Oh to be 12 again and not be able to feel any G.)
Seth just received an appointment to the US Naval Academy. His 6-year
goal has been to attend the USNA and to become a pilot in the Navy. He
will be following in the footsteps of his grandfather (USN pilot, 21
years, 14 carriers, axial and angle decks, recip and jet), great uncle
(USMC Pilot, angle deck, jets), and uncle (RIO in F-14s).
No, I don't know where *I* went wrong. :-)

Although possibly good for the YAK communities with the supply of more parts (hopefully),
a monopoly of one industry is never good. Competition keeps the prices
in check as well as another way to maintain quality control. The something
that is missing in a monopoly. Looks like Russia continues to slip back into
the ways of communism. One government with no dissention and one aircraft industry
with no competition. Sad thing is even under the communist regiems, they
had competing design beureaus!

OK, now I really can blame this on the camera. The camera is positioned on
the front dash. The Canopy Arch that you can see in the shot is about 2
inches back down the plane from the lens position. This a REALLY wide angle
camera, maybe 170Deg. In fact if you look closely you can see the wing tips
in the video. (see picture attached.)
So both my heads are at least normal sized, it's a trick of the camera,
honest :))

Ok Gus, now I want to see more of your bird, pretty. Does it still have
the "swallow" tail, I know some were changed.

OK, now I really can blame this on the camera. The camera is positioned
on the front dash. The Canopy Arch that you can see in the shot is about
2 inches back down the plane from the lens position. This a REALLY wide
angle camera, maybe 170Deg. In fact if you look closely you can see the
wing tips in the video. (see picture attached.)
So both my heads are at least normal sized, it's a trick of the camera,
honest :))

Just jealous that you got to fly and I'm in the office working to pay the bills.
Sure, sure..blame it on the camera...for the small head that is. Hey, I have a
good urologist friend that can help with that small head thing. ;>))!
Kidding of course. Really did enjoy the video and it certainly put smile on my
face. Maybe I'll get my little Samsung
Sports Camcorder with it's remote camera up an going this weekend.

Mark,
No, just take two nuts and screw them on the stud, one on top of the other,
make sure that the top one is tightened down VERY tightly against the lower
one, then using a wrench on the bottom one unscrew the stud out of the case.
Your local parts dealer normally carries a stud removal tool that is much
easier to use but everyone that I have seen destroy the stud in the process
of removing it. The lock nut method allows you to reuse the stud.
Call me if you need: 509-826-4610

The Columbus Ga airshow, Thunder in the Valley, has invited redstar pilots
to participate. The dates are March 17,18,19.
I am working on the details, but believe they will offer us gas and hotel
rooms. I should have that info shortly.
Please contact me if you think you would like to attend. They=B9re looking
for at least 6-8 of us for some formation flights.
Thanks,

Mark,
No, just take two nuts and screw them on the stud, one on top of the
other, make sure that the top one is tightened down VERY tightly against the
lower one, then using a wrench on the bottom one unscrew the stud out of the
case. Your local parts dealer normally carries a stud removal tool that is
much easier to use but everyone that I have seen destroy the stud in the
process of removing it. The lock nut method allows you to reuse the stud.

MessageFrank;
Where did you find the figure of 16.5 degs advance?
I do not have the M14P manual in front of me but as I recall the setting for the
M9F (fixed spark) magneto is 23 +/- 1 deg BTDC. That by the way refers to the
crankshaft angle NOT the propellor shaft angle. IMHO that is the only correct
way to refer to engine timing angles. It is true that this angle cannot be directly
measured in a geared engine but to refer to it in any other way only leads
to confusion.
To set the spark advance angle you must use the corresponding angle of the prop
shaft which, for the M14P, is marked on the propellor mounting flange. That angle
is the firing angle X the gear ratio.
In this case it is approx.14.5 to 15.8 degs ( or 15.15 +/- 0.65 degs) at the prop.
flange. Still not 16.5.

Interesting...... I thought 16.5 was the static setting on an M-14 without
regard to the gear reduction (I'm not near my manuals so going by memory).
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what the factory static setting is
supposed to be set to. Can anyone straighten me out? What I'm looking for is
crankshaft degrees.....I don't want to have to factor out the gear reduction
unit. I thought 16.5 was the crankshaft static setting.........Dennis, you
bugger, I know you know this... :)
Most naturally aspirated engines take something on the order of 20-25
degrees crankshaft advance but supercharged engines like the M-14 have to be
retarded to (what I thought) is 16.5 deg BTDC because the supercharged
mixture burns faster. That's what made me wonder what the factory static
setting was optimized for on the M-14.
I'm wondering why the factory chose the static setting it did, what that
static setting is and what flight regime it's optimized for.
Regards
Frank
