    Subject: Mass Formation Missions
Folks, On the 11th of Feb. an RPA ecom was sent out detailing the RedStars mass formation program that several volunteers have worked on over the last few months. If you are an RPA member and did not get this ecom, please email Jeff Linebaugh, Terry Calloway, Jim Goolsby or reply to this post off list! (check your email inbox for the ecom) - these folks are working to put the program on its feet to... The program has 79 FAST and near soon-to-be-FAST rated pilots signed up, and four shows are booked from ICAS. 18 pilots have signed up for the four shows and this sign up form will go out periodically to the members, it's important that every FAST pilot has a chance to put their name in the hat. RedStars is a program that allows the RPA to attend ICAS each year to market the mass formation flying skills of members to the airshow industry during this critical scheduling convention. Airshows that request RPA mass formation are then communicated to you the membership via ecom sign up form (which will be posted on the new website as well). From that point on the member pilots execute the airshow mass formation. The program attempts to insure the organizers provide a standardized support package for the pilots flying (gas, oil, rooms, transpo). We hope this sets up more opportunities to allow pilots to fly in leading airshows around the US/Canada. The program hopes to be self-funded by donations collected from the airshows and eventual corporate sponsorship. Thanks for listening, Drew ---------------------------------

Hang in there my NE Region brothers! I'm with you in spirit. While our Great Leader talks of RPA airshows this year, I had to shovel 8 inches of Sunshine off the apron in front of the hanger. Wings Over Miami coming up this Friday and temps will barely break into the 80's. How will I stand it :>) Craig Payne

    Subject: Yak 52 Fabric
    From: "Mike Bell" <yakflyr@comcast.net>
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Mike Bell" <yakflyr@comcast.net> I am about to recover my Yak 52 control surfaces and have a couple of questions. I removed the rudder fabric and discovered the unusual way they do their rib-stitching. The ribs are drilled and the stiches go chord-wise instead of around the rib span-wise like most aircraft. Is this how others are doing the stitching? The yellow Russian primer is almost immune to MEK. That's supposed to mean it's OK to use Stits products without re-priming everything. Anybody had trouble with Stits being imcompatible with Russian primer? I have read of several fixes for cracked paint on the rudder. One thing that looks like it would help is to use 2 inch finishing tapes. The Russians use one inch, and that leaves the fabric directly touching the forward edge of the trailing edge metal with no reinforcement. My cracks seem to come from that area and radiate forward. Two-inch tapes on the ribs would stiffen the fabric too. -------- Mike Bell Yak 52 Elk Grove, CA yakflyr@comcastdotnet Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=11743#11743

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Frank Haertlein" <yak52driver@earthlink.net> Mike The Russian primer is impervious to even paint stripper. I had to remove some from a few parts and I found a witches brew of MEK, 100LL, paint stripper, JET A and a few other things I can't remember did the job.....but not without allot of scrubbing :) Don't worry about the Russian primer...it's some of the best in the business. Your covering process won't touch it. As viewed from the rear, the upper left part of the rudder is prone to cracking on all YAKs due to pounding from the prop blast. Some people have put hard foam formers under this area to stiffen the fabric and help keep the paint from cracking due to the prop blast. Frank

--> Yak-List message posted by: Cliff Umscheid <netmaster15@juno.com> `Doug, Re the GENTEX SPH 4B I'm using the subject helmet in my YAK 50. There's plenty of room at canopy level I ordered and received a brand new copy; paid about $300. then went to Bender at Spruce Creek and had the military headset converted to civilian accessory for about $100. This is better than the $1200. I would have had to pay for a comparable hard hat through normal channels. Sure, it's a helicopter hat but when I finished fastening a large red star decal and some other do dads , no one knows the difference. The guy in the YAK 52 who tried to bounce me last Friday never knew what kind of a hat I was wearing when I was in position 30 seconds later and flamed his skinny ass. And then there was this red faced old guy in a CJ whose primary experience was gained while eating his crew meals from a tray on a pillow in his lap while in the cockpit of his BOING ....... Will they ever learn? Sorry, Doug; things were just getting too quiet.
