Dear Fellow Red Star Aviators,
We have finally confirmed the venue and dates for this year's All Red
Star! After doing a thorough search and several sight surveys, I am
pleased and excited to announce that we have selected Porterville
Municipal Airport (KPTV) as our new home 'drome.
Porterville is ideal. The terrain is varied and fun, the runway is
plenty long and wide, and taxi to and from is short and easy. They
will have 2 100LL trucks and one Jet A truck operating full time, plus
a self serve island AND a dedicated *oil* truck. I think the guys
might even throw in a smile or two.... ;) Everything is easy access.
There is a large grass camping area with lots of trees, a covered BBQ
with plenty of benches, and restrooms right next to the ramp. This
will be a much more intimate and enjoyable environment than we have
enjoyed in the past and we have the airport and local officials in full
support of our event.
Traditionally, ARS has been the weekend after Mother's Day. Due to
scheduling conflicts, we have moved the dates this year to the weekend
before Mother's Day, May 3-7. This does two things....keeps you from
heading out to the hangar to prep your plane for the event on Mother's
Day, and puts our ramp party night on Cinco de Mayo! Arriba! This
also keeps with our Fifth Year Anniversary theme...
Due to the change in venue, we will no longer be handling hotel
accommodations internally. We have secured the best rate available at
the Porterville Best Western, a nice, newer facility with lots of
amenities (including WiFi, clean linens, no roaches, heat, jacuzzi to
unwind after your FAST checkride, and a pool....I can see Carrier
Landings already! ;) ). Rooms are limited so the earlier you can
reserve them, the better. There are other less expensive hotels in
Porterville, but we understand that the BW is the most desirable. We
will have vans on a schedule for transportation to and from the
airport, which is only 4 miles away. We are finalizing a rental car
discount and will update that ASAP.

We have come up with some fun new flying events this year, including
improved ordinance for the bomb drop, and Brian Shul is scheduled as
the keynote speaker. I saw him at Boeing's Museum of Flight in
Seattle, WA this past summer and he gives the most interesting and
enjoyable presentation that I have seen. You can visit his web site at
www.sleddriver.com. He will be brining copies of his book and we are
hoping to have a few of his limited edition books to auction.
We are currently working with our web designer to update the ARS site
and we'll post all this info and updates there shortly. The schedule
will generally follow as it has in past years. The FAST ground school
begins Wednesday the 3rd at 1400.
So for now, mark your calendars and reserve your rooms! More info will
be coming shortly.
If you have any questions, you can always email me directly or call me
on my cell phone. I probably won't have the answers, but it will be
nice to chat with you! ;)-
Call (559) 781-7411 to reserve your rooms. To take a closer look at BW
Porterville, check here:

Talon,
Last year we arrived as singletons or elements. The Wetumpka group ended up arriving
as singletons in severe turbulance and 50kt gusts. Some fun! The Moontown
gang came a flight. We formed up at AUO and flew a mass formation from there.
We also flew a mass formation fly-by for Alex City that day too. This year that
will not be the case.
I think Dennis Savarese is kind of the point man for this. Small problem for him
right now is that his computer is TU. Most likely got hit by the Invitation
virus. Will know more about his computer over the weekend.
I have an oil tank with a leak in the seam behind the drain. So it depends on when
I have time to pull the tank, sand the seam, and get it spot welded as to
whether I play or not. Will know more later this weekend.
