RE: Yak-List: Electrical Problem (YAK-50)Mark,
If it's the =D0=98=D0=9C-30 fuse, no effort is needed to find it. I've got some
here.

Just behind the engine open the lower inspection door underneath the aircraft.
Stand up inside of that hole.
Look towards the front of the aircraft
Up near the top right mounted on the engine firewall is a large enclosed electrical
panel.
Open this panel by removing... as I remember... the four screws on each corner.
Look into the middle of this panel and you will see a rather large electrical
BUS FUSE.
This will be black in color, round, and about oh... 2 inches long or so. It
will have a 90 degree terminal SOLDERED onto each end of the fuse, and held in
by nuts on a stud as I remember.
I can not remember the rating on it... but it's about 20 or 30 amps.
CHECK THIS FUSE FOR CONTINUITY... or better yet, just turn on the electrical
master and verify that you have 28 volts DC on both sides of this fuse.
These things go bad... not only because they BLOW, but because they fail internally
and literally just fall apart inside from long term vibration.
If it is bad, then go to the local electrical supply house and find one of the
same amperage and length. Solder the 90 degree terminals to each end. If you
have to, you can make new terminals to fit the fuse that you end up with.
Once you see the thing you'll know what I mean and what is needed.
Forget about finding a new Russian fuse to go in there. It's possible, but
not likely and not worth the effort. Been there done that.
There is no promise that this is your problem, but given your description, it
is the first place to look. If you have no voltage on EITHER side of the fuse,
then you have a main contactor relay problem more than likely... but again,
given how you described the failure, you have high hopes for it being this fuse.
Your description was one of falling voltage. A fuse will do this. In the
future, you need to check both the voltage and the current draw using the meter
in the aircraft as all this is happening. Looking at it, it shows current
draw and should normally be close to zero. Pushing in the button shows voltage,
and my guess is that this was going all over the place and ending up at zero.
The YAK-52 has ALMOST the same panel.. but it is located in a different place
and is not a direct replacement.

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Tim Gagnon" <NiftyYak50@msn.com>
Was wondering if anyone good shed some light on this. I have spoken to a few
folks today (thanks TJ) but it was too late to get into the airplane to check
what was mentioned. I am looking for anyone who has had this or a similar problem
or may know what happened.
I have a Yak-50 so keep that in mind.
I am flying along today and go to change the destination in my GPS. As soon as
I do, the radio/GPS goes dead. It kind of put out a static sound before it went
though. Then it comes back on...then back off. So I start load shedding in
case I had just the battery left. Anyway, it finally goes dead and then I start
losing instruments. Oil temp guage, gear lights and fuel indication. They dim
a little bit then they are gone. They come back on briefly then they are gone
again. So, I just shut everything down and landed without incident.
On the ground, I have a mechanic check it out. What we have is a good battery
but ZERO power getting to the airplane. No instruments (except for the GEN light??),
no shower of sparks, nothing. The things is dead!
So, it sits in the hangar until another mechanic (with a boner for things electric)
takes a look. I would like to give him something to look at and was hoping
someone here could add some insight.
By the way, it was a gorgeous day and I was going to refuel and fly....so I was
pretty pissed!
Thanks in advance.

Subject: | From BFM back to Formation |
Whew, that was sounding like a well written Tom Clancey novel on Air Campaigning
- certainly lots of solid knowledge on all subjects here.
Anyone know the longest formation flight? In 1998 I flew a flight of AC-130U
gunpigs for a 36 hour non stop trans pacific formation with 7 inflight refuelings
from Hurlburt Fielf FL to K2 Korea at T-37 speeds with full guncrews and
weapon loadsto prove a point about getting to the fight without breaking down
in Margaritteville - the closest we could find in mission planning was in fact
AC-130Hs non stop formation in Desert One to Guam back in 80 at 24 hours, but
figured the old SAC crews did some long duration gaggles. AFSOC rightly keeps
things quiet - was this a guiness run (what the bombers do in Iraq?).
I'm sure we as a group have some good "There I was..." recaps from flying so
actively the last ten years...here or in the newsletter....I was in a flight of
L-39s flying extendeed trail last year and we had a little inflight issue that
potentially threatened to FOD the only motor, for sake of position, and the
fact that with this issue lead would provide nothing as chase except marking
point of impact, leads SA at that moment, and apparently a front seat GPS that
wouldn't caugh up the data, we had the other guy lead us quickly in to the closest
field, it had a moderately short strip. Out in front 15 seconds, suprisingly
to me, he landed and got on the brakes. Hmmm, would you have landed if
you were leading in this one?
By the way, I was at Waycross and heard someone yell "aircraft on short final
gear - gear!", that was a well executed mutual support save - way to check your
friends!
If anyone has recently installed these and has the approximate cost for the oil
filter kit and drain kit, could you email off list? A guy is selling a beautiful
CJ and has neither of these,
Drew

Well, most of you probably saw the tornado that ravished El Reno, OK tonight.
The pretty red white and blue a/c you see from the video being thrust out of his
hangar. Well, it's awful, it will undoubtably be a total loss. Here are some
pics, hope they come through.
Canopy broken, left wing ripped open, rudder and elevator damage, prop destroyed,
and tail wheel ripped off...UGH
smash
