Preston,
De-classified Miltary secret here: the V530 hub spanner and Huosai hub spanner
are interchangeable. Somewhere between Doug Sapp's and George Coy's parts bin
lies the answer. Another remedy is to measure and buy one off-the-shelf from specialty
wrench suppliers. I even made my own back in the Dark Ages.
Whatever you use, you will need a "wrench extender", mine is a 5' long piece of
2" pipe, flattened to fit the spanner handle on one end. Support the opposite
side of the prop (while on the airplane) with a ladder/cushion to prevent the
engine from turning with the 400 ft/lbs of torque it takes to break it loose.

After seeing a couple of these seized V530 hubs, even if you were able
to disassemble it, the corrosion will be severe and the bearings and
races will be pitted. In fact, I used my spanner wrench with a 3 foot
extension along with a 250 pound person and could not turn/remove the
large nut on one of them. Based on my experience and seeing the damage,
once it was disassembled, would be to bit the bullet and replace the
hub.

Does anyone sell, or have plans for, a V530 spanner wrench? I need a
hefty one. One of my blades is seized up due to dried grease and rust
(hopefully not too much) and the retainer is really, really hard to
turn.

Let's see Barry. Using some of the specs for the V530 to measure blade
angles, it says the measurement of blade angle is made 1000 MM or 1
meter from the center of the hub. That places the measuring point on
the blade about 8" in from the tip of the blade. If you look at a new
V530 paddle prop, it will have a line on the back side of each blade
from the leading edge to the trailing edge, which in fact is the blade
angle measuring mark. When one measures from that line to the tip of
the blade, as I said, it is about 8", give or take 1/8". So, doing the
math, 1 meter =3D 39.37 x 2 =3D 78.74" + (8"x2) =3D 94.74". I still
think that is "approximately" 94 inches and not closer to 98". FWIW.

I have one which was custom made. It is currently with Reade Genzlinger.
Basically it is made from 4340 1/2 inch steel. If Reade can make a
tracing/measure for a drawing and somebody knows a place to get them made
why not make a bulk order for those interested. It fits any 1/2 inch socket
put a big socket bar in there with a steel tube lever and off you go. If
someone wants to make them I/Reade can get the pattern out there.

Hi,
Sorry for "intruding" here as this is not about a YAK, but its probably the best
source for information anyway....
Initially I wanted to post on Guss forum (www.notasukhoi.com), but I cant get it to work since a couple of months.
I saw the ad for an I-3M on www.barnstormers.com and now Im looking for any information re. I-3(M)s, SP-91s or SP-95s I can find.
Ive sent the seller an email and got a response already, however I still have hundrets
of open questions....
Has anyone seen an I-3M life yet (or even flown one)? Hows the quality and workmanship
compared to the I-3? Is it really better?
The seller came back saying that the I-3M has flaperons (which is totally new to
me) which are electrically operated!? Any comments on that?
Anyone seen an I-3, SP-91 with a Russian 2-blade prop (as the MTV seems to be an
extra option)?
Any comments appreciated!
Thanks,
Markus

Dang email! Sorry Dennis, I would never rebuke you in public intentionally. That
was intended to be off list to Doug only....my apologies! Sometimes we get
numbers in our head that seem so right....but I'm clearly "wong" on this one....
As if I didn't know better before to doubt a master....

Smash,
I am so sorry. I just got back from flying 621CJ from Memphis to Phoenix
with Linedog to put long range tanks in. The news report on what the
twister did to the hanger was indeed eerie. I could only cling to the
denial of "nah..it couldn't be a Yak in there".
Jeff and I had some high wind and dust conditions, and "had" to spend
the night in Midland Tx ( B-29 flew at the CAF there) to avoid a
thunderstorm, but otherwise dodged the worst.
I just want you to know that you can come "play" here in SLC any time
too while you're hopefully re-assembling your bird. There is a guest
room available and free transport to the airport etc. any time.
That really does suck, but for what it's worth it's a heckofa story.

Let's see Barry. Using some of the specs for the V530 to measure blade
angles, it says the measurement of blade angle is made 1000 MM or 1 meter
from the center of the hub. That places the measuring point on the blade
about 8" in from the tip of the blade. If you look at a new V530 paddle
prop, it will have a line on the back side of each blade from the leading
edge to the trailing edge, which in fact is the blade angle measuring mark.
When one measures from that line to the tip of the blade, as I said, it is
about 8", give or take 1/8". So, doing the math, 1 meter = 39.37 x 2
78.74" + (8"x2) = 94.74". I still think that is "approximately" 94 inches
and not closer to 98". FWIW.

Does anyone sell, or have plans for, a V530 spanner wrench? I need a
hefty one. One of my blades is seized up due to dried grease and rust
(hopefully not too much) and the retainer is really, really hard to turn.

Yeah, I have told a couple guys off line, that I agree it all can be fixed and
he will fly again, by somebody. I just don't know if it will be me?
I think that by the time you add a new prop, new canopy, new tail wheel, new
paint, new fabric, re-skinning, mx fees, 10,000 pt inspection, yada yada yada,
I think that it will add up to be as much or close to what I have it insured
for.
We shall see, they said it could take up to a month to give me an estimate from
the insurance company.

If the spar isn't damaged then the skin can be replaced. It looked like
a lot of the damage was holes in the control surface fabric. After it is stripped,
then you can check the underlying structure. Holes punched in the skin
will not effect the strength. Any underlying structure can be fixed. Dye Check
for cracks if you worry. Have a good mechanic look it over. Had a friend that
flew a single place YAK thru a power line. After it was repaired and the
prop replaced, it was good as new and he demonstrated it frequently. Even wings
can be replaced if necessary. Canopy is not structural.

Hi Smash,
I think your assessment of the damage to your airplane is on the mark. If you
think about it for a bit you really don't know the G loads the plane took in
this environment. If you have rivets that were partially sheared and returned
to the originally position how do know . Can you measure this damage? Same for
metal fatigue and over stress of areas that do not appear to be damaged This
aircraft could be returned to flying condition, however , would you want to
pull rated G forces on it ? Probably not.

Well, I had the fire marshall take 4 pics last night that I posted and that gave
me a warm fuzzy that MAYBE he would fly again, but after I took these pics
today, there is no way it will be cost efficient enough to rebuild him. Take
a look for yourself and let me know what you think.

These are probly the best retrofit indicators for landing gear position you
can buy.
You can get them from www.newark.com
This link will get you the data sheet for both the bulbs and the bulb
holder...... http://www.dialight.com/pdfs/prodgroup/508-xx38-504.pdf
You can get incandescent bulbs but why? The LED bulb part numbers are listed
below and they last almost forever.
As most know, LED bulbs rarely if ever burn out so this retrofit for any
28VDC aircraft landing light system is one of the best available.
Part Number = 25F1471
Description = LED Lamp Color:Green; Lens Style:(H x Dia) 28.96 x 8.38 mm;

I am new to this list and am thinking of importing a yak from russia to Australia.
If anybody else is interested we could bring back a couple and cost share
the freight etc. If interested send me an email on antdea2000@yahoo.com.au. Has
anyone else imported aircraft into Australia?
Thanks, Ant.

Hi Sarah;
Really sorry to see the damage to your hangar and Yak 55. Looked over
the photos you sent and see absolutely nothing that is not repairable.
Whether it is financially feasible or not I don't know, that will depend
on your insurance coverage.
Take some time to evaluate the situation, your 55 is not scrap by any
means. It can be repaired and returned to 100% airworthiness status.
Best;
Walt
