Mark, You came across as nasty and mean spirited on that one instead of informative and knowledgeable. The next time you're feeling this way kick the cat, chew on a door jam, take a deep breath and attack what you think is the problem and not the people...for the sake of your own dignity. - Val

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Scooter" <yakk52@verizon.net> Val has a good point. We should all just chill out for a day and not make any irrational reactions based on anger. So, tomorrow we'll find Mark Higgins and kick his ass. Valkyre1(at)comcast.net wrote: > Mark, > > You came across as nasty and mean spirited on that one instead of informative and knowledgeable. I kinda like the kick the cat approach, especially if the cat is one that does not understand how the mouse population effects every cat in the barns life style. But I's just a poor dumb county boy who calls a spade a God d____ shovel. Pete

Ok, I know "everyone" seems to be buying the Garmin 396, and plunking it into their Yaks ( and CJ's) I am curious if anyone is trying some of the other competing products? Like the anywhere map - http://www.anywheremap.com/pages/awm-vs-396.aspx Just curious, as I would like to have some weather insight as we fly all over in our wonderful VFR planes.. David

I used to use AnywhereMap. I have also seen and used NavAir. Both run on PocketPC on a PDA. Neither hold a candle to the 396 I now use. The inherent fault with any program running on PocketPC is the OS itself. Garmin does not have to contend with the overhead of all the other crap that runs on a PDA, their systems just does what it is intended to do: display navigation and weather data (yeah, you can listen to XM as well if you pay for it but there is no overhead since the system is using XM for NEXRAD data). In addition, you will need the not so small WXWrox XM receiver for NEXRAD data with the PocketPC based systems. The 396 itself is smaller than the WXWorx unit alone. There are also many features of the 396 that just aren't available on AnywhereMap or NavAir. The 396 wins hands down. That is some of the practical advice I was looking for.. every 396 pilot I have talked to swear by them, but I just wanted to hear from someone that had used the others as well.. I think I will still make sure, but the 396 seams like a no brainer.. _____ From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Phil Cogan Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 9:32 PM Subject: RE: Yak-List: Yak w/ 396 or other WX capable GPS I used to use AnywhereMap. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Mark Higgins" <mark_higgins_la@lycos.com> Honestly, I don't care how much you charge for your kits. It's none of my business. Just spare me your sales talk about costs and clues. I friend did the same job for $100-something. So, go brainwash your Yak crowd. What blew my lid was this sense of entitlement to essentially looted property. > Wait until he calls Carl, George, Doug, You or myself for parts........I am > sure we will remember these comments and charge accordingly. Wow ! This sounds like a mini cartel here ! Too bad I'm not a customer. Just one question to you, my dear parts barons: what do you think are your chances for getting busted one day for an attempt to smuggle out stolen goods ? ( Hint : it doesn't take a lot of well-wishers to get on Customs watch list ). And let me guess - are you going to whine that you sincerely believed that $6 a plug is a true price ? Also, a note to this "Scooter" thing: I feel sorry for your name, please accept my condolences. Call me what you like, but at least I do not drive a plane designed for 18-year-old kids to get basics in 50hrs before switching to jets, get dressed like a 300lbs democratizer, and call it a "warbird". One more thing - it appears that this list is being manipulated in a genuinely american democratically perverted way to ensure that no "undesirables" stay here long enough to stir trouble. I dont mind really - go ahead unsubscribe me. ________________________________ Message 1 _____________________________________ Time: 04:30:40 AM PST US From: "A. Dennis Savarese" <dsavarese@elmore.rr.com> Higgins, If I've pissed you off, that's tough. The kits COST me more than $300 each and I buy them in quantities. And they are much, much more than just a set of $2 a piece spark plugs. So if you want to "discuss" this with me, then by all means please do so, but take it off line since obviously you have no clue as to it costs to manufacture these kits. Phil and Talon, I agree with all said. I have both the Anywhere map running on an IPAQ with a garmin gps 10 blue tooth reciever. The pocket charts program is about all anywhere map is worth. They were the first to place your aircraft on the approach plate with the moving map. I just flew back from the coast tonight using the 396 for the weather. Could not have been happier. A level 3 and 4 were in my path. New about them well before they could become a factor. I prefer the 396 hands down over the Anywhere Map.
