Thougt I'd chime in, if anyone is interested in a Yak-55 I have one in
excellent condition for sale. Last I checked there were 5 Yak-55's
registered in the USA and 68 Yak-55m's. This is one of the 5, hasn't flown
beyond Intermediate in the US and all logbooks, history, etc. are completely
in tact. More details and pics on Barnstormers at:

Shrek,
You may want to contact Smash. Since her 55 got smashed by a tornado. Last
I heard she was looking at one down in Tx.
Smash you lurking around?

Phil there are two things that come to my mind that I haven't seen
mentioned #1 do you center your primer to the off position after start
up? as the primer will dump fuel into the engine if not centered, next
is it faulty after warm up just turn it to the cyl position if it runs
ruff its probably working correctly. #2 have you had the auto-lean set
as it seems your problem might be fuel related, the procedure is in the
engine maintenance manual. Of course this is my experience with the Yak
52 the CJ is manual lean. And if you have a manual lean why don't you
shut it down that way?
Good luck

straight 100LL .
What can I do to stop the dieseling?
Phil,
Dennis makes many good points, and Jerry may have nailed the answer.
Referring to the CJ Service & Maintenance Manual (Shutdown of the
Engine, pg.203):
1. Set throttle for 700-800 rpm to cool the engine, and make cylinder
head temperature not higher than 150 deg.C if ambient air is below 25
deg.C or not higher than 165 deg.C if ambient is above 25 deg.C.
2. Set throttle for 1,900 rpm for 10 - 15 seconds to burn off the
plugs. "Then set the throttle in the position corresponding to 600 -
700 rpm, cut off the magneto switch, and set the throttle to fully
opened position smoothly."
This technique will likely eliminate the tendency for the engine to
run on, particularly with higher ambient temperatures.

Talon,
I have not put my remote magnetometer in yet but am about to do so (in the 50).
Traditionally in the 52, it is mounted in the farthermost aft bulkhead section
in the tail. That gets it well away from anything that can cause a magnetic
disturbance. I am fixing to mount mine in front of the bulkhead forward of my
tail wheel strut. The hard part is going to be running the wiring from about 2
feet aft of the battery bay door all the way back the tail wheel. Know any 2
ft Trolls with 8 inch fingers or a well trained monkey that works cheap? Maybe
for bananas?
Can't help you on the auto pilot. Talk to Ray Reeves, he installed one in his 52.
As I remember he had a few teething issues at first.

The servo mount for the autopilot is just below the front seat mounted
on the bulkhead where the floor board meets the bulkhead just after of
where you rest your left foot. The servo arm attaches to a strong clamp
affixed to the aileron torque tube.

Steve,
The problem with the actuators "running out of pull" just before locking
into the uplock parrot hook is common to all Yak 52's. That is why I
recommend accomplishing a few landing gear retractions/extensions AT VARIOUS
AIR PRESSURES after making any adjustments to the actuator rod length. One
will find that at lower air pressure, say around 20 ATM's, the gear may not
indicate "up and locked" especially if the actuator is "running out of pull"
because of the adjustment.
I am also copying the Yak list on this one since it affects all Yak 52's.

As I'm sure you are aware, the air pressure bleeding off while the gear is
retracting acts like a shock absorber within the actuator. That is what
keeps the gear from slamming into the uplocks. By bleeding off the air
pressure (putting the gear handle in neutral) and then moving the gear
handle to the UP position obviously works, but now you are potentially
creating more problems down the road because the gear is not suppose to be
slamming into the uplocks. That is why there are the little reducers in the
up side and normal down side, but not the emergency down side. These little
reducers in the line reduce the flow but not the pressure. By doing so it
allows the gear to cycle smoothly and not bang or slam up or down.
Most everyone has witnessed or performed an emergency gear extension while
the airplane is on jacks. The procedure of course is to turn the main air
off, move the gear handle to neutral (sound familiar?) and then open the
emergency gear extension valve. This relieves all the air pressure in the
actuators. Thus, no back pressure to act as a shock absorber. The gear
extends very rapidly and literally slams into the down and locked position.
Bottom line here is, normal gear retraction and extension has a built in
shock absorbing mechanism. Try not to defeat it or circumvent it (unless
absolutely necessary) because it can lead to other problems with actuator
and uplock mechanisms as well as the potential damage to the uplock assembly
structure and attachment area caused by the physical pounding.
