1) Do the Nanchangs usually have the carb heat ears/horns/funnels/whatever
? During my Yak 52 days I rarely saw them. Are they needed for the Nanchang?
2) How do CJ owners install an air filter? Is there one available from Doug
or elsewhere? Is it needed?

Phil,
The "rabbit ears" were standard on both the CJ-6 and CJ-6A. They simply
collected hot air from around the exhaust stack and were attached to the back
of
the carburetor air box. More of an 'alternate air' than a real carburetor
heat. Some guys didn't feel they were necessary and cut them off. Mine : one
was melted off due to my exhaust stack left lower "Y" burning off. Long
story there. The Chinese thought they were necessary.
I have a Brackett (928-757-4009) air filter over the "toung" in the air
intake. It is made like a sock and fits neatly. Some guys feel it reduces the
manifold to much (about one inch) and don't use it. Not a good idea if you're
working a grass field or dusty area. Some guys have taken off the screen as
well. Worse idea yet, unless you have absolutely no care about the dirt
going in the engine nor its longevity.
I keep an air filter on and use a 10 micron oil filter. My engine is
approaching 1,200 hours now since I put it on the airplane new from the factory.
I
change my oil between 30 & 40 hours. Compression is still good and I've
never ever needed that one extra inch of manifold pressure.
